Minirig 3, 2.0 (stereo) vs 1.1 (minirig 3 plus a subwoofer). This video compares a single minirig 3, a pair of minirig 3s and a minirig 3 with a minirig subwoofer. I have already said I prefer the minirig mk3 with a subwoofer rather than a second speaker for stereo. In this video I explain why with sound tests ad frequency graphs.

the cardboard spool from a roll of duct tape is a perfect speaker stand for the minirig speaker set the back of the speaker into the hole and it gives you a nice angle of delivery when listening to the speaker

Really informative video, I have the original Minirigs v1 & the v1 subwoofer still going strong after 5 years. They sound absolutely superb from Queen to female vocals ( christina Perri, Katy melua, The Corrs ) using my iPhone 4s & the music encoded in aiff, I have the 2 Minirigs either side of my electric wheelchairs headrest & the subwoofer mounted on the top of my backrest. I used custom built & custom length 2 into 1 4 pole cables. They cost me £33 for less than a metre of cable but allows me to turn off the entire minirig system on the sub button. If anyone has or knows of similar but cheaper high quality short cables I’d be interested.

Awesome idea having a minirig on the wheelcahir =) I think the split cable might still carry on mono with both speakers as it would be forwarding the same signal but at least got sound coming into the left and right speakers =)

I agree with you, first I was going to get the 2.0 but then I thought when minirig 3 is facing up it's pretty much 360 so adding a sub 3 will make it sound like a 360 boombox. I use 1.1 for group camping, beach and pool parties and everyone was so impress with the sound coming out of something so tiny. What's even more impressive is that it'll last me 8-10 hours on high volumes and 6-7 on max. More than double the battery of jbl boombox 2, a bit louder and way smaller. JBL need to step up their game to be honest.

Good Review Alan, I agree that the 1.1 is the better combo if you are going to buy just 2 units - the depth of bass has to be experienced to be believed. 2.1 obviously gives you the best of both worlds (albeit at a higher price) and 2.2... Overkill or perfection? Personally, I think it's overkill at normal listening volumes, but if you want to make an impression and rattle a few windows then 2.2 is the nuts :) Couple of quick questions: 1. What do you think of the firmware updates for the Minirig 3s and the minis? If you haven't done it yet it may be worth doing a review on the difference in sound signature between the old and new versions. 2. which do you think sound better integrated with the sub, the 3's or the minis?

if you are going 2.1 it isnt thattttt much more tog et the full 2.2. The 2.2 gives you full volume because in 2.1 you have to reduce maximum volume of the minirigs to match the subwoofer. also getting true left right seperation of the subs means better stereo when you have them wide apart. i didnt notice anything between updates. mine seemed more stable in stereo pairing on software 13 but minirig say there was nothing in 13 to account for this. i havent been hands on with the minis so really cant say, maybe thats for another day.

@@alanrossreviews Good point Alan, Until very recently I never realised that bass image was an issue or that it could be improved by separation - I was always told that it was directionless (which turned out to be complete crap!) but I agree, the 2.2 setup is definitely better than 2.1 (though that does take the combined price to over £500 - even bundled! )

@@dragonoffski4501 right £500 is a lot of money when compared to what else you can get. But to me its not that you have a £500 bluetooth system but that you have so many options with what you do with that system. So you can travel with just one, or listen late at night with just 2.0, or 1.1 outside or well, you get the idea? to me its not the sound in 2.2 that you pay £500 for but all the other options you get with it.

@@alanrossreviews Can't argue with that :) - and you don't have to fork out all that cash at once either - you can build the setup gradually 1.0, 1.1, 2.1 etc as you can afford them. I take a single 3 to work every day - (unfortunately a sub would cause too much disruption!) - but I love the fact that (with the full setup) I can have excellent quality, depth and volume on a bluetooth speaker set up and still have room-spanning imaging/separation (which for me is important). As far as I'm concerned they're worth every penny.

i wonder if the wireless would ever be reliable enough? pairing with a couple of minirigs alone is hit and miss much of the time. It would of course be great to have that option but i dont think there is anything on the horizon.

dodinhtuan No wireless connectivity but it now has 40 watts of power with the same size enclosure and depth of 48HZ but a more powerful driver and amp making a cleaner sound and I’d guess the ports will be altered slightly to make way for the extra air That’ll definitely make a good 1,1 I can’t wait for olevs gadgets to do a first review on it. 👍

Great video this :) I'm planning to use these for busking; based on whatever acoustic knowledge you may have (which I'm sure surpasses mine) and the figures you got before correcting for SPL, which would you recommend in terms of overall loudness and reach outdoors?

Do you mean which other speakers? If busking i would use these wired. Its slightly better sounding and avoids the flakey nature of their wireless pairing

Which do you think has better lows, mids and highs at max volume for say the beach, or a pool party, minirig 3 (2.1) setup or jbl boombox 3?

minirig is a balanced system, boombox is a party speaker essentially. bb3 has lows the minirig can only dream of but mids and highs goes to minirig 2.1

I think I read somewhere that they're tuned to be listened to at a 45 degree angle.

i would love to see where it said that. as far I know they are tuned to be listened at all angles but weighted for 45 degrees. In other words they took all angles into account when tuning but gave more weight to the fact most people listen at 45 degrees.

I find 1.1 amazing in low gain but in high gain a little underwhelming. Its loud for sure but the bass jus doesn't connect the same way

IiTHXiI the new v3 sub will take care of that with its 40 watts of power as opposed to 30 and better driver and amp to match the mr3. 👍

its frustrating, one day it works first time then next day could take 10 mins to pair. also stereo lock isnt working at all for me.

Alan Ross Reviews what do you say about this Alan? Can all of it make someone forget the frustration? If not the minirig3 +sub I plan to wait the and buy two flip5 + Xtreme 2... what would you suggest? I believe the coming flip5 is quite promising for sure better bass, and since it have a single driver, it may be great for a good stereo image when two connected.

@@migks37 minirig 2.2 is real hi-fi, yes its worth it. The flip 5s and an xtreme can only play party mode so you can never get that real stereo image which stereo is really all about and what makes it s immersive. If you value critical listening get the minrigs, its a hassle but it will work one way or another. and then you have all the other options on how to use it, one, two, 1.1 2.2 depending on situation. Also jbl with no eq embedding is killing a lot of its usability.

Alan just got a mini rig mini how do you know when it’s charged the light is green plugged in does it change color when charged is there a longer power cord to purchase this is short

green means charged. if you unplug it and just quick press it then it should go green quickly.

Hellloooo Alan . You kept the MR3 . I returned my 2 MR3 ‘s could not stand that harsh sound ...... and flaky app . Interesting test with the sub though ......sound seems more exciting and engaging . Have there been more firmware updates as the stereo set up was so glitchy !! MR3 and a sub .....a contender for letting my Beolit 17 go ? Hope all well . C 🎵🎶🕺🏾

no only a contender if playing lower volumes or going full 2.2. Yeah there are times after using the app i think ok these sound great, then other times cant get past the screechy high end. no firmware updates and stereo pairing is so glitchy without consistency. at one time i would be able to pair using the app all the time, yesterday i could not pair them unless unpairing and repairing with the phone again. wireless lock simply doesnt work. however i cant listen without a sub, whether 1.1, 2.1 or 2.2. how you doing?

Hi Alan - I am good thank you. Ready for the summer though ! 😎 The older I get the less I hate Winter ha ha . The usual 2 reviewers ( I won’t name ) like the MR3’s . 🤔 ! Everything they praise I don’t I don’t praise and visa Versa ....I am beginning to think I have strange ears ! The new Telful Rockstar cross speaker looks interesting . Oluv’s review against MR3 2.2 rockstar Seems to sound wide with some nice stereo field . Hope all good on your side . 😆 I can’t go back to MR3’s .... I counld cope with the fiddly set up if I got glitchy free sound . 🎶🎵C

Hello Alan,maybe you can tell me something about it. Following problem: When the subwoofer is connected and I change tracks or stop, there are always two small bass hits or bloopers. Do you have it too and is it normal? I have Minirig 3 with Sub 3 Thank you!

@@iqbaljunaid1 i just cant see it, the current sub sounds good with the mk3 so not sure what a sub 3 would bring. it cant be louder cause it has to balanced with the mk3 and other minirgs, yeah it could be deeper but ig uess that would mean bigger. what everyone wants is a wireless sub but given the problems just pairing the minirigs themselves i cants ee that happening either. what they need to to is make some sort of unit that allows you to basically plug all your units in and operate them from some main control. or just make a gehtto blaster that incorporates the rigs and subs anyway. i think they are really missing a trick not do that, i already called it the maxirig!

@@alanrossreviews The maxirig sounds good and unique lol i hope they do release it very soon something like that and yeah i think that theres no point for the wireless subwoofer because imagine u connect your phone to the wireless sub and then all u would hear is just thumping bass so i think they should leave it wired so u can connect it even on the speakers that has no bass but trebble like lowbudget ones

@@iqbaljunaid1 what i would like to see is a wireless module that would allow all the minirig units to connect to it via cable and then all units can be controlled wirelessly via that module. i meaning one click for low gain across a full 2.2 system etc. on and off, everything that is currently awkward would be much easier. they are a small company thats why i dont think any of the wishlist will happen. they just dont have the resources for that kind of expansion and development. They should do some crowdfunding for this stuff.

Hey, thanks for the comparison! By the way, the Charge 4 got an update from 2.7.0 to 3.0.0. Can you compare it and see if it is louder or not? I hope it will get louder, as the Charge 3 just surpasses the 4 in terms of punchiness and loudness. The Charge 4 doesnt seem to boost upper bass at maximum, which makes it sound thinny against the Charge 3. Maybe they fixed that

I have a question. When stereo pairing two Minirig 3s with wire, do the speakers automatically change to stereo, right and left channel in each speaker, or do I have to do something to get to this mode?

you have to use the minrig splitter cable. to get left and right. otherwise i dont know what you are trying to do? are you in bluetooth mode?

@@patrickmerryfield i didn't take to the mk3 at first, but once i added the subs and used the app to eq to my liking i dont use my mk2s any more. Mk3 louder and more dynamic. Harsh in its own though.

Sound fantastic 2 mark 3s with a sub great stereo field plenty of bass when u can connect them as a stereo pair !!!!! Still have the same frustrating connection issues ridiculous, one minute connect Stereo no problem next minute no chance no matter how many times you try.App just doesn't know what's going on can't find speakers really pisses me off!!! Latest firmware from factory. Love them when it works but come on I had this problem on the previous versions and got shut. Thought this would have been sorted by now!!!

Hey Alan! Question here. I had a Minirig 2 and Sub2 shipped to me in the mail from a friend and it got lost which I'm devastated about. Anyways, I'm going to buy a new setup soon and wondering you opinion. I do production and lots of listening, primarily bass music but also a lot of jazz, funk, and classic. If I wanted flat and accurate frequency response with good highs and miss as well as solid bass, would I be better served by the Minirig Minis, a pair of 2s, or a pair of 3s along with a sub for each? Devastated over my loss of the minirigs but I'm going ti save up hard and get my hands on a set! thanks :)

the mk3 with the new sub and custom on-axis tuning will fit all your requirements. however be prepared for lots of frustration with pairing the mk3s and maybe the wireless lock not working. when the gear is working it is fantastic in 2.2 but is clunky in use.

Alan, I have a Mark 1 and wanted to buy a Mark 2 but Minirigs have sold out. Can I link my Mark 1 to a Mark 3? I don't really want the subwoofer as I only use the Minirig as a speaker for my Mac Pro.

you would have to do this via aux mode. I dont think you can do this with the mk3 in bluetooth mode.

Thanks, Alan, - I assume Aux mode is 'wired'. I am guessing that I would have to use aux mode with a Mk 2 also. Aux mode works best when using a Minirig as a PC speaker because, in the case of my Mac Pro, the bluetooth signal tends to pick up interferrance and get dropped.

Hi there, I bought a Minirig 3 but I think it might be defective?... Does anyone else get a popping sound with bass kicks on medium to high volumes after only a few minutes of playtime? Seems like maybe the battery discharges fast and can't provide enough power to the amp properly? Pretty disappointed because there's no issue with it immediately after I fully charge it, it's actually pretty damn amazing!! ...but only for a few minutes.. Can't seem to find anyone else mention this online.

theres nothing like it for the options you get. yes its great in 2.2 but you can still choose to go with one two or three depending on use. you pay for the modular system.
