Minish Cap runs at exactly 60hz on Switch (it should be 59.7275...)

It has been suspected that the Switch version of Minish Cap runs faster than GBA hardware, which has a framerate of 59.7275...
I perform a Test by running the Switch version of the game next to the GBA emulator version for approximately 10 minutes on the title screen, there are no loads here so the game is running at a fixed speed without lag.
When starting the test I had to time the resets to be as close as possible, the Switch version is reset 10 frames slower than the GBA emulator which is factored into the end calculations.
Timing of the raw video reveals that after about 10 minutes there is ~3s difference between the video, checking the frame counter on the emulator vs the frame count of the raw recording confirms the emulator is running at 59.7275hz (as well as can be measured from only 10 minutes of footage).
The time difference between the versions is calculated at the end from the raw video, this gives us a scaling factor for how much faster switch is which is ~0.456%, when we apply this to the known framerate of the GBA we get the speed that switch is running at.
The faster frame rate causes switch to be this much faster at the following time values:
- 10mins = 2.725s
- 30m = 8.175s
- 1hr = 16.35s
- 1:30:00 = 24.525s
- 2:00:00 = 32.7s
- 2:30:00 = 40.875
- 4:00:00 = 1:05.4
(note this timesave is purely from the game speed and does not account for the ~2.5s faster saves the Switch version has)

For anyone looking to dunk on Nintendo for this: the only alternatives to having the game run faster are to either a) change the output framerate of the Switch GPU, something I'm not sure is possible with the internal display and maybe possible for external or b) skip frames occasionally. As someone who's dealt with this problem in implementation it's honestly not an easy problem to solve and I think they made the right call considering the speedup is just 1.00456238751x.

Due to complicated video standards there are a ton of videos out there at 59.94fps or 29.97fps. If you play this on a 60hz screen your video player will most likely just speed it up a bit because it’s such a small, imperceptible difference, and skipping/duplicating frames would be more jarring anyway.

@@WalnutOW Isn't 60 FPS kind of the actual 59.94 FPS in disguise? I noticed that if you put in 60 in a rendering program, it may secretly replace it.
@WalnutOW
@WalnutOW 4 месяца назад
@@artey6671 I think yes, the NTSC standard is 59.94 fps. That was originally due to some technical quirks of analog video, but a perfect 60 is more common now in the digital era. My monitor lets me run it at either 60.00 hz or 59.94 hz. It also goes up to “240 hz” which js really 239.76 hz. The point is that there still is a ton of variation.

@@WalnutOW Well, does your monitor also support the true 240 Hz? Seems like a strange place to stop. Anyway, thanks for the info. I want to buy a new monitor soon, so maybe I can confuse the sales guy with that.

I don't really get it. If you run GBA games on an emulator with a 60 FPS monitor, isn't it the same?
@BloodyJealous
@BloodyJealous 4 месяца назад
framerate does not equal refresh rate, you can run a game at 30 fps on a 120hz monitor just as you can run a game at 900fps on a 60hz monitor. The frames will be there but it won't be displayed by your monitor. Older games like GBA were never meant to run at higher fps than what established so whenever they are forced to like with an emulator they run slightly faster (or slower if lower fps than original, that's also why you get "slowdowns" on emulators when your device isn't good enough). So to answer your question, yes, if you set up your emulator to display 60fps or turn on vsync (locks the fps to the same value as your monitor's refresh rate) the game will run slightly faster if it was originally meant to run at 59.7275fps
@artey6671
@artey6671 4 месяца назад
@@BloodyJealous I meant that the Switch and the uploader's monitor maybe both run at 60 (or 59.94) Hz, rendering (haha) the GBA's refresh rate meaningless. In that case, they would run at the same speed, right? Unless exactly one of the emulators was actually built with that in mind.
@retroedit_
@retroedit_ 4 месяца назад
@@artey6671The relevant difference here is that the title screen loop gets more and desynced over time. The emulator's default settings are designed to run the game at the proper speed, regardless of how the monitor's refresh rate ultimately ends up displaying it. But on Nintendo Switch, it will run the game itself at the slightly faster speed of 60 FPS.

... you know... it kinda seems like it's a refresh problem... if you looked at each loop of just the flashing "Press Start", I bet that each set is identical, as in the difference come from somewhere at or after the end but before or at the beginning. 🤔 Like, take both 1s, does the first 3 flashes compared to the last 3 flashes happen with the same difference of time? Example if the "press Start" flashing difference is like 0.0001 sec in the first 3 of the first loop, is it still that same 0.0001 difference in the last 3 flashes of the first loop? (Then do the same thing with the last 1 or 2 loops where the difference might be 0.006.) If there is no difference between the first and last flashes of each loop then it's in between the loops somewhere when it restarts. If there is a difference then the yes, one is not exactly 60.
