Minister Shanmugam has been serving as Minister for Law since 2008 and Minister for Home Affairs since 2015. On his YLB debut, he shares his thoughts on the complicated nature of the conflict between Israel & Hamas, the balance between policy and public sentiment in view of the political controversies seen locally this year. He also talks about why POFMA has been useful from his POV, and what keeps him up at night about the future of Singapore.

It was refreshing to listen to Shanmugam talk outside of Parliament and in the news. Too often he sounds like the gahmen's hatchet man. This interview showed a different side to him, a more humble and forgiving side that is quite different from his usual combative and somewhat condescending image. I'm glad he doesn't hate Singaporeans for raising questions about Ridout.

About Majority vs Minority. The great man mentioned something pertaining to the interests of the majority vs minority. Fines affect the poor and is essentially perceivably negligible to the rich. So, will this issue be addressed since Majority are not the Rich? COE deters/prevents the non-rich from getting a car for their basic/family neccessities. But it has no deterrence on the real rich who are the minority. As you can see, i am not easy to debate with

Indeed, the US has had such a huge and involved role but barely had a mention here. But he did say something about self interests, so similarly any discerning person should realise that he is at the end of the day, a politician looking out after Singapore's own interests. Once viewed in that light, everything he says - or rather did not say about the US - becomes clear

My idea to make citizens hungry for prosperity is to up the cost of living😅. GST, COE, Carbon tax , water, electricity, property, just to name a few. But most importantly, we should delay cpf annuity draw down by another 10 to 20 years. Income tax can raise a few percentage and salary can slow down a bit. This way, they will remain hungry competing with foreigners who are enjoying the strong sg curency

While I respect his views on this matter. It’s hard for me to Shake off the Notion that a Policeman had actually commited sucide due to allegations of workplace bullying, all happened while he’s in Charge of the Ministry Of Home Affairs. I wonder what was the outcome of the internal investigation? Workplace bullying seemed to be common in Singapore’s workplaces.

The 2nd element is already well explained by the minister which is the right wing Zionist party at the start. Sg govt is opposed to the illegal settlements in west bank as stated in the international law. The 2 state solution is the end goal similar to the china foreign minister view. We are always aware that Malaysia can become the next threat hence we are not stupid to let you guys come in sg unchecked.
