Minneapolis Minnesota history and cartography is explored and examined from this vintage map originally produced in 1879. In the video we zoom in and look at various historical aspects that make this map so great. The map itself is a birdseye perspective map in that we get to see Minneapolis in a 3 dimensional perspective. If you have any questions about this map please comment below.

"Planing mill" - where they PLANE wood. After sawmilling probably. Lumber.

I work in Minneapolis and am very interested in the history of the city, especially the downtown area. Thanks for going over this old map! There is almost nothing from this map which remains in today's Minneapolis, but I sure see how downtown's main artery streets were laid out very early on!

+Jackie LaVaque Thanks Jackie! For sure we love these old maps as well as looking at geographical history. We'll be sure to upload some more historical content on Minneapolis.

Sawmills came first and were the primary industry for some time, then the lumber began to dry up and the need for sawmills declined. Meanwhile as this took place the growth in farming in the area created the need for flour mills. Sawmills were eventually replaced by flour mills. It was a natural progression as one came on the heels of the others decline. Also of note, as the grain industry took over, brewery's sprung up by the dozens. The Washburn A mill was the site of a massive explosion around the time this map was made.

I'd like to point out - the river flows West to East, for the most part, through downtown. Which is why people who live in the area or spend a lot of time there use upstream, downstream, downtown and nordeast to describe directions.

And planing is the taking a plane to wood.

+Ryan Coleman Thank you for the localized interpretation. Though for the overall purpose of the viewed map its more prudent to describe the Mississippi river as a northern to southern flow which it is predominately.

Nice thanks. Glad to know there are other people in the world, especially American people, that find history interesting. Someone below mentioned geeking out on the map, while I consider that an honor, as to post a geeking out on Major League Sports. It's easy to find a football fan in the USA, it's much harder to find a history fan.

I spent my 20s in the Loring Park neighborhood, which wasn't a thing yet according to this map. Loring Pond is there, which I believe was called "Johnson's Lake" back then (don't quote me). It's so interesting how things changed over time. Minneapolis is having a rough go right now. Let's hope that is a mere blip and things will work out for the Mill City.

Washburn=General Mills. There were several Washburn brothers. Washburn HS is named after one of them (supposedly Cadwallader Washburn, but there's some debate about that).

If I were just interested in geeking out on the map, this would be a cool vid. As a presentation of 'neat things happening in historical Minneapolis as portrayed by a map' it's lacking. - I suggest spending 10 minutes picking out cool stuff to show people, plan out your presentation, and then talking about it. That'd serve everyone really well.

W.D. Washburn founded Pillsbury which was later owned by his bro C.C. Washburn who was a major general in the Army that founded General Mills. That's a whole lot of clout and family money! They obviously were brilliant businessman.
