(06/13/2023) Even after missing a key bases-loaded opportunity in the eighth inning on Tuesday night, Minnesota strung together its most dynamic rally of the season -- using both power and speed -- against one of the game’s elite closers. Carlos Correa’s first career regular-season walk-off home run capped a four-run frenzy in the ninth inning, sending the Twins to an improbable 7-5 victory in the series opener against the Brewers.
And after a few of these games, the time of that lifeless offense sure feels like more than a week ago.
The Twins trailed, 5-3, entering the ninth inning, but Michael A. Taylor immediately cut the deficit to one run with a leadoff homer. Following a walk by rookie Edouard Julien, pinch-runner Willi Castro stole second base, showing off the dynamic small-ball element he has brought in key situations to a Twins roster that has lacked it in recent years.
When Donovan Solano lined a single up the middle, Castro blew through third-base coach Tommy Watkins' stop sign to score the tying run with the help of a throw that was to the first-base side of home plate. The buzz had hardly left Target Field when Correa crushed a third-pitch changeup -- Williams’ signature pitch -- off the facing of the second deck for the Twins’ fifth walk-off victory of the season.
