MY CAMP NOTES: JJ McCarthy AND Sam Darnald -both at the start of 11 on 11 drills from the 20 SHARED work with the STARTERS AND later when the coaching staff moved the ball to the 10 BOTH SHARED work with the starters. The personal in the huddle stayed the SAME with the only two positions being swapped out were Ty for Arron and Jj for Sam. I don’t know why this is NOT being reported BUT YES JJ is getting work with the ones. On that point Jets was not on the field which I believe is smart because he is like a cheat code for the offense making everything easier for the QB. Kind of like taking the queen off a chess board to see who is a better player. After they got work in from 20 then the 10 coaching staff moved the ball back to the 45 where JJ was strictly with the second string. Yes I would like to reiterate that YES McCarthy was playing with (7-31-24) starters.. wide receivers #3,#4S. Like I said the only players being changed out of that huddle were the quarterbacks and running backs. Once moved back to the 40 the defensive calls changed according to which quarter back was in. Darnald got blitz defense and JJ got coverage defense. The receivers from the starters due to this defensive scheme were much more open than the second string. I would like to point out that one rep McCarthy in particular did get coached up from HC KOC due to him (JJ) not releasing the ball on time. I checked this with my counter part and they said “who was he supposed to throw to??.. no one was open.” Both moved the ball equally from the 40 with the edge going to McCarty from the 20 and 10. I will say at this point from the 40 my BIGGEST observation in between the two is JJ McCarthy’s pocket awareness is on a complete different level than Sam Darnald’s. McCarthy with step up into the pocket taking advantage of passing lanes and seams to scramble/run Darnald will roll out of the pocket exposing himself to the OLB/DE pass rush JJ McCarthy at one point ran for what would have been 30 yards stepping up off of LT and exposing the left side of the defense. At the end of the practice in between position drills after the 11 on 11 work from the 40. JJ McCarthy absolutely won 2 minute drill between himself and Sam with Sam getting stopped on 4th and 4 on an incompletion compared to JJ’s PURE stoke on a sideline slant to Trishton Jackson (tight coverage) on the left side which would have won the game.
If you want a more in-depth notes Judd I will happily give them to you.. such as JJ getting knocked down in the pocket or throwing the ball away because of pressure and coverage.. but yeah I sure will Mr. Judd
I’ve been high on McCarthy since the end of the college season. So many people tried to tell me he would be the next Zach Wilson but I told them his leadership abilities alone are so much better than Wilson. He’s exactly what I thought he’d be, the arm talent has been on full display. People really thought “he didn’t put up big numbers” so he wouldn’t be good
So true. Refreshing to read something that hits the nail on the head. I saw it when he first hit campus. J got “dat” it factor. J.J. has the intangibles and wants to be great. Hard not to succeed with all of that going for you.
Say what the hell you want about this guy, there is no way I am hitching the horse to the wagon at this point. He’s out there wearing a read Jersey nobody allowed to hit him let alone blast his ass in a blitz. I want the kid to succeed but I need to see some live game action first and how he handles getting put on his ass.
The fact that he was molded by Harbaugh in college is a bigger plus than most people credit. Jim loves to run the ball down peoples throat, but he's actually an ingenious football mind that requires his quarterbacks to understand way, way more than the tape often suggests. JJ has already worked a version of KOC's West coast offense that was every bit as complex as Kevins for 2 years before he was even drafted.
Being a Packer fan I have a bad feeling about McCarthy. He seems like he has that "It" factor and that clutch gene. If I was a betting man I'd place my money on him being the Vikings franchise QB for the next decade or two. He's probably going to be the QB to get you one before you die!!
Same man, it hurts to say as a HUGE Packer backer myself, the Vikings are going 17-0 and winning the superbowl. Probably the next 10. And JJ McCarthy will make Jordan Love look like a JuCo quarterback.
I've watched the JJ McCarthy since high school. In Illinois and IMG and then as a wolverine fan followed him in michigan. He is the real deal a phenomenal player, a phenomenal leader, and a great human being. Skol! We got a real one!
Drake Maye to the Patriots was always going to be a disaster. Maye is a project for sure, and I feel like O’Connell probably would have sat Maye for a solid 2 years before giving him the keys to the offense. Doesn’t help that the Patriots have the 32nd ranked receiving core.
@@77racing71 Who crapped in your Corn Flakes? I'm not going anywhere, too bad so sad. What kind of loser gets jealous because it's somebody's birthday? You should take a real hard look in the mirror about your life.
For the ones saying “it’s just practice” that’s all we got right now 😂 I rather have news our “franchise qb” is slinging it around and developing then hearing he’s being horrendous/ being outplayed
My college WR coach said if you can touch it you can catch it. Even if you were going full speed across the middle and your gunslinger QB is throwing behind you. Oh, and you're about to be hit by the senior MLB who eats freshmen alive.
In college Jerry Rice did that. He reached back and grabbed one that was way behind him with one hand and took off. i knew then that he was going to be one of the all time greats.
I saw Darnald getting sacked more than McCarthy and those sacks you may be counting on JJ may be averted because what I saw is him climbing the pocket which isn’t necessarily a sack my friend
I think it’s a mistake to use Darnald as the sacrificial lamb in the point of him “Taking lumps” instead of JJ and that’s why he could be not taking ALL the reps right now. The opposite theory of that and the one I lean toward Mr. Judd would be “broke money don’t make money” (let me elaborate) you have to take a chance to see returns. McCarthy is missing out on the priceless timing process he should have with the starters. And that’s everything in the NFL
That kid is gonna scramble but remember he is good throwing on the run. It will be more like an arron rodgers type scramble where he keeps his eyes down field
can N'Keal Harry go on practice squad? i know they changed the rules couple years ago. he also changed positions. depending on how the young talent performs during camp and games i could see Harry going to PS. if he's able to
Remember, Nailor isn't playing against a top 10 secondary. The Vikings secondary is a pretty weak group. I would be careful about claiming how good a reciever might be based on how they look against this secondary.
No need to rush JJ. Let him slow cook, and if that means a high frist next draft even better to recoup what we have used to get other players. the defense still needs a few more players to really open that window wide open.
I truly believe Darnold is essentially a sacrifice to give McCarthy a full season. No matter what, I don't think McCarthy plays this season. Even if he is better.
15:45 is JJ holding the ball and not processing because he is playing with 2s going against 1s on D? Is he getting sacked because our 1 DL is beating the #2 OL? This is why we need context and JJ playing with the 1s vs the 1s to really make a call on him as QB 1.
JJ is NOT starting week one unless BOTH Darnold AND Mullins are injured. JJ won’t likely play in the regular season this year unless the game is out of hand in one fashion or another: ahead or behind.
I’ve been calling for them to move Patrick Jones inside to DE since last year. It’s makes too much sense. It would give us interior pressure for once, and dude can hold his own in the run game
KOC said he has a plan for every player on the roster for the preseason... But he did not say anything regarding what the plan is. So unsure right now. I am assuming so, but who knows
If he doesn't that would be saying something. It's one thing to not want him to go against 1's. If he can't be expected to play against the 2's, 3's, and 4's why would you spend a 1st-Round pick on the guy?
Ive never seen a fanbase punk on a top-10 QB they just drafted more than the forever-loser Vikings and their vitamin-D deficient fans. It is almost like the fanbase wants him to fail. JJ McCarthy will be the best QB in this class- and you lucked into him.
I'm a Viking and Wolverine fan first and foremost. Most of the fan base is supporting and excited about JJ. Quit representing us Wolverine fans as ignorant blowhards. JJ doesn't need you to defend him. Be gone for good now. Go Blue and Skol!!!
I don't see or hear many of the real Vikings fans punk on McCarthy. Most of the people that punk on him aren't Vikings fans they are fans from opposing teams. I know some real Vikings fans and they are stoked to have him. I also know tons of Packer fans myself included that are worried about what this kid can do for the next 10-20 years! Most of us would rather have a promising rookie on a rookie deal than pay Love a monster contract before proving he can be consistent.
Most are shell shocked from ponder and the likes, but they also didn’t actually watch JJ play in college…. So they just had preconceived thoughts due to talking heads saying he didn’t throw enough.
@@Michigan_Wolverine Most vikings fans were really excited to get this guy myself included i thought we'd have to trade up to get him what won me over was the college football playoffs
@@StillKeepOnLosinglets be real buddy. Doesn’t matter if he went 4/6 with 4 TDs or if he went 1/6 with 0 TDs. You’d still be calling him trash no matter what he does. 😂
