Those bird sounds compliment her beautiful voice. A five octave voice. What a talent. We lost her way too soon. She is now in a choir of angels watching over us and singing in a matter in which only they can
As others have mention, Minnie Riperton passed away far too soon. She passed away only about four years after releasing this song. She was not only the mother to Maya Rudolph, but the wife to mega-producer Richard Rudolph. This song was covered wonderfully by Shanice Wilson.
This video was slightly shortened. At the end, when she's singing "Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya", she was singing to her daughter, Maya Rudolph. Sadly, Minnie died due to breast cancer at 31 in 1979.
The loud thud of your jaw hitting the floor, was the same for us in 75. A few buddies & I were in my garage working on my cars engine. The radio was playing & this song came on. When Minnie hit those notes, we just stopped & our jaws hit the floor too. Her voice was a gift.
The white guy playing guitar behind Minnie is her husband Richard Rudolph, who not only co-wrote the song with his wife, but together are the parents of Maya Rudolph, famous comic actress and longtime member of the Saturday Night Live cast.
The original whistle stop vocal technique Queen. Minnie Riperton possessed a four octave vocal range and could effortlessly whistle stop a note without thinking about it. I remember seeing her on Soul Train right after Diana Ross performed and the audience went crazy. Truly a voice that was like nothing we had ever heard before and gone too soon. Sadly she had just finished her last album and she was tired and laid in her husband's arms and passed away. RIP Minnie Riperton 🎵🎵🎵🙏😇
I know I'm a bit late to the party... Shes not wearing any makeup. Most women don't realize how little makeup they can get away with. It didn't take away. It only shifted her beauty in her display of honesty and sincerity. Lovely!!
I was a senior in High School in Detroit in 1975. I remember when Minnie Riperton released "Perfect Angel" The first time I heard "Lovin You I was driving in my Mom's Pontiac Grand Safari wagon totally stoned. When this song came on, I had to pull over and turn the radio up. Closed my eyes and I was transported to a spring day in the dead of winter. She just made you want to be in love with someone right at that moment. This was the wedding song for the rest of the 1970's. Sadly Minnie died 4 years after this release. She was a "perfect Angel"
She did have an amazing voice! I don't know which female singer has the highest vocal range, but Minnie must be among the highest if not the highest! She is singing in Heaven now!
Yeah, altogether now: “Her Voice!” I can attest that when this song first hit the radio, there was a huge buzz on campus- no one had ever heard anything close to this… it seemed unreal, but this was the 70’s before “faking it” was even possible. An amazing track that left a permanent impression. Thanks for the request and the 100% predictable reaction!!!
Minnie Riperton was "ONE OF A KIND"! You will never find another voice like hers! I am sure she influenced so many other female singers like Mariah Carey. Mariah can hit the high notes, but not like Minnie Riperton. Great choice Angela. Great reaction.
Minnie had a whistle register, very rare. Beautiful song, loved it back then still do. Hard to believe it's almost 50 years old. Was about her daughter Maya. Song was cut off short she kept singing Maya, Maya. Maya became Maya Rudolph on Saturday Night Live.
The late, great Minnie Riperton (1947-1979) co-wrote this 1976 hit song with her husband (Richard Rudolph), who's seen playing the guitar in the background of the video. It's not only a love song directed at a romantic partner but also a love letter to their young daughter, the future comedic actress Maya Rudolph, who was born in 1972 after they had started working on it. Minnie can be heard singing Maya's name at the end. Stevie Wonder co-produced the track with Minnie's husband Richard Rudolph.
Saw Minnie in '75 as the preliminary act for Joe Walsh. This song couldn't have been bigger than it was that night- what pipes, and what a tragedy that she passed so young. (breast cancer)
When I was in college, I cried when she died. Also, at the end of the song when she says, Maya Maya, she is speaking about her daughter, Maya Rudolph, the actress.
Another awesome reaction. I enjoyed watching when Minnie went there for that extremely high run the first time. You are terrific at this reaction stuff!
Yeah tha Midnight Special version: WOW 👌🏾 Lordy this woman was Sooo Beautiful 😍 n Sultry as her voice jus melts u 😉! Yep I remem this, her ❤️ RIH 👸🏽 MINNIE 😇
I love that you love Minnie Ripperton so much. Her voice is stunning and her delivery is so genuine and pure. I miss Minnie. She's brings us a piece of heaven.
I do have a fun fact, that brought me back here. on the inside of the record cover was the words to the song. That's normal often song lyrics were printed in record covers or tape sleeves... The not normal thing is that it has the first use of "cos" meaning 'because' printed anywhere else.
Minnie was such a unique fantastic talent...such a beautiful person too. Gone way too soon...I had the privilege of meeting her back in the day.. My mother- in-law back then was road mgr. for Seals & Crofts, she met Minnie via touring with them. She an acquaintance of. Minnie came by our house one day , I met her then..She was so beautiful, warm & friendly...This song was about the loves in her life , her husband & her daughter Maya, A very talented , comedian , actress and a pretty decent too..Minnie had 2 good hits, Memory Lane , And my other favorite of hers Reasons..( not to be confused w/song by EW&F..two completely different songs)
Minnie was a wonderful Jewel! She was married to the Jewish man on the acoustic guitar in this video. This song was dedicated to him. They had a beautiful daughter which he raised when she died of breast cancer in 1979. The world lost a beautiful soul and awesome singer, not even Mariah Carey or any of the other women artist of today couldn't touch her with a ten foot pole. She was a icon even though she didn't live that long!♥️🙏
This song was Minnie Riperton's one and only Top 40 crossover hit of her career. The song went all the way to hit the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1975. Stevie Wonder wrote and co-produced this song with Minnie's husband, singer-songwriter Richard Rudolph. Minnie's daughter, the great comic-actress Maya Rudolph is probably proud of her mother's achievement in pop music in the 1970s. This song is a beautiful song indeed. RIP Ms. Minnie
This song reminds me of an old spinster who lived three houses down, from me . She fell in love with the widower who moved next door to her. She started singing so loud the widower heard her from his bedroom window. Two years later they got married. Nice song.
This beautiful woman is the mother of Mya Rudolph from SNL. The last words of this song is Mya Mya Mya. She died young of cancer. I love her and this song is a classic.
Minnie was the first woman to hit those high notes, Mariah Carey was inspired to try it. Producers after hearing her voice decided to keep the instrumentation to the bare minimum so not to cover over her voice
I used to work at an airport and one night around 2008 as we were going home, my co-worker and I were the only ones on the automatic train that takes you from the Concourse back to Security. It stops automatically at like nine stops along the way but at that late time of night, no one was getting on. For some reason, my friend decided she was going to sing this song! And she was good! Couldn't hit "THOSE" notes, of course, but a good version. She got so into it that she didn't notice three older guys actually DID get on the train at the last stop before the end. As she finished, they all applauded and she was SO embarrassed! But she shouldn't have been! Tough song to sing and she did great! Especially since it came out 8 years before she was even born!
It was a huge number one hit back in 1975 and when the song was fading out she was saying Maya Maya Maya that’s because her daughter is Maya Rudolph from SNL
But have you checked out Lisa Fischer, "How can I ease the pain"? That's the stuff there!! I enjoyed ur reaction to "How deep is ur love". Totally agree w/u. Don't 4get "The Jetts' Make it real" & EWF's "That's the way of the world". Keep doin' what ur doin', young lady. Proud of ya.
Luv, Julia Fordham covered the song, which was a brilliant tribute. Yet, you should also react to Julia's anti-racism attack on South Africa, with her 1988 video 'Happy Ever After. Seriously, it s a treasure!
This is kind of a starting point for her really. The entire LP is something special. You do not have to do a reaction to it but do yourself a favor and listen to "Reasons" from that LP. For more of then "whistle tone" have a listen to "Inside My Love", great song well worth it.
Top tip. If a person looks at you the way she does while saying those words then you should hold them tight and never ever let them go. No singer today would sing it this song with such heartfelt emotion. She's singing it to her man, that look in her eye and the facial gestures. Not even the best actors in the world could fake that.
