Thanks for that. I'm member of your site since I discovered you 5 months ago. I play for 7 years and you definitely help me to make a huge step in my solos and most important, in the comprehension of what I was doing. Thanks for that, God bless you. Don't stop your job, it's very important. Sam from Belgium.

Hey Sam, thank you for the complimentary words! Glad to hear we've helped you make a huge step! You're right, knowing WHY what you're playing works is just as important as the WHAT you're playing, because the WHY will allow you to propel forward in your learning! Thanks for your membership and stay tuned for more content from us! :)

A quick thank-you. I've got a couple of other paid courses to work my way through this year, but you're on my list for the future, Brendan: just excellent stuff, so thank you!

At 7:51, you said that to start with the C natural minor but can you begin with the C harmonic minor? I guess these two scales can be switched around?

I started making up my own standard voicings for minor ii V i progressions last night and ended up coming up with the exact same thing you've presented here! I prefer the sound of the natural 9th on the 2-7b5 chord because I prefer to build it from the 6th mode of melodic minor (locrian #2) rather than the natural locrian, but I appreciate your analysis and case for the b9.

Awesome, Sam! I prefer the sound of the natural 9th as well, but the b9 has it's place too!

JazzPianoSchool.com - Learning Freedom (Online Jazz Piano Courses) What about the flat 13 on the dominant chord? Can’t it just be a natural 13?
@jazzpianoschool
@jazzpianoschool 6 лет назад
@canefan17: great question! Again, it's a matter of personal preference - usually I prefer the b13 because it gives the 5-1 a greater tension release. However the natural 13 can work too, depending on the context!

I get the b9 comes from the natural, harmonic and melodic minor modes. However, the dorian mode the 9th will be natural. Is there a good min7b5. voicing if using the Dorian mode for two hands in piano?

Hi Joseph: thanks for the question. Regardless of what key you’re in, if you see a Dmi7b5 chord - the root position chord is DFAbC and the extensions that typically follow which would be 9: b9 = Eb 11: natural11 = G 13: b13 = Bb And if you put that all together, the scale becomes: D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C So that would be my suggestion as far as a single scale for Dmi7b5, as opposed to Dorian mode. Of course there are other improv tricks like chromaticism, enclosures, etc that make the other notes acceptable in specific ways. But as far as the direct answer to your question, for Dmi7b5 I would use that scale above (technical term would be D “Locrian” mode, but if you think of root position chords + extensions, often times that is more intuitive than the modes). Hope this helps!

I liked the video, but I couldn't help but notice that, when demonstrating the chords, you were playing them kinda low on the keyboard which made it sound muddy and unclear
