Much respect to sensei. I *love* strong, perfect, basic form. Sensei's punch would clearly put your solar-plexus through your spine (: I wish I had a nickel for every time I've seen an improper punch left uncorrected by unfocused or questionably-qualified "masters".

punching is the best way to defend and fight while you are rooted to the ground while moving making you stable so that you will not stumble and can fight effectively. The kick will reinforce the punching. I simplify my training: straight punch and cross, upper cut and hook. Kicking is limited to front kick(bladder area), round house(lower side of the body) , side kick(lower abdomen) and turning kick(lower abdomen), knee strike( the start of front kick) and elbow strike, finger strike(spear hand), extended knuckle and chop.

This is good and interesting info. Have trained wing chun several years and I see the similarities in these different systems. Both start relaxed, your body turn and punch starts with the feet, legs, hips, torso, and explodes at the end with a snap. The karate punch has more axis rotation but the wing chun punch has lower wrist snap. Both use a close range punch once the distance is closed, both have a “5 or 6 inch punch.” He has great power generation and posture, throws the punch out and also contracts his fist hard through impact, accelerating the whole time. I think he strikes at a downward angle as well, this hurts more because the opponent is forced towards the ground instead of back. He also is able to move freely and relax before the other body strikes he demonstrated. Good stuff.

@Richard Hurts Or the MMA fighter could throw a punch for the first time without gloves and break their hands. Karate practiced traditionally is more than a match for Muay Thai which MMA striking is based on. Read about the challenge fights between Kyokushin and Muay Thai in the 60s I believe (spoilers Kyokushin won 3/4 fights).

1:17 if it has nothing to do with Shaolin Temple why this last style is named 少林寺流? 少林寺 SHOURIN-JI (SHAOLINZI) Shaolin Temple 流 - RYUU style. Also there is the infamous school of master "DOSSHIN", said to have been a Japanese spy in China during World War II, that is called 少林寺拳法 SHOURIN-JI KENPOU. Kenpô was one old name for any fighting art in Okinawa, the art of the fist. It is just the Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese CHUANFA written the same 拳法. Usually in China it's abbreviated as only CHUAN like in SHAOLIN CHUAN, TAICHI CHUAN, BAI HE CHUAN.
@Catsincages
@Catsincages 5 лет назад
Possibly because it was named after Shaolin Temple out of respect to the oral history of karate, but there is no direct lineage to Shaolin hence sensei Higa saying "no". Karate of the Shorin lineage in addition to being based on the indigenous Okinawa Te contains elements of various Chinese arts, most notably white crane and 5 ancestors (which also contains white crane). Those Chinese arts were, according to tradition, taken to Fujian province by a handful of monks who survived the Northern Shaolin temple's annihilation in 1641 by Li Zicheng the Shun dynasty Emperor.

Very similar to Shaolin-style Kempo. Either way, I wouldn't want to be at the business end of his first two knuckles.
@shozinryu4
@shozinryu4 5 лет назад
The reason they are similar is because the very word SHORIN is the Japanese pronunciation of Shaolin. The Japanese have difficulty anunciating the word so they pronounce it SHORIN. Shorin-ryu literally translates to Shaolin system/ Shaolin school. True story. Check for yourself. In fact if you were paying attention in the begining the Master mentioned that.
@shozinryu4

When he is hitting, his fist has a diagonal orientation to the makiwara. Why is that?
@mestizoboy
@mestizoboy 5 лет назад
That form is nearly flawless; It's not diagonal if you consider the proper contact points of the index and middle knuckles. -It sounds like you're envisioning the entire area across your 4 knuckles. With the back of your clenched hand parallel to your forearm, angle your fist laterally to where the index and middle knuckle are in-line with, and the contact points are perfectly perpindicular to, the forearm. THAT is "straight". -Hope that helps
@hatejethro1164
@hatejethro1164 5 лет назад
@@mestizoboy so if i understand it correctly, the angle the entire fist makes on contact is irrelevant, as long as the alignment of the entire body(including the first two knuckles) behind the punch is correct?
@mestizoboy
@mestizoboy 5 лет назад
@@hatejethro1164 Not really. As I said, the index and middle knuckles should be in-line with your forearm. In my first reply, I was merely pointing out that sensei's fist wasn't at an angle if you consider the correct contact-points of his fist. Body position/stance is a whole other subject. Look at sensei's punch/pause the video at the point where he strikes the makiwara - You'll see that you can basically draw a *straight line* from the end of his humerus, down the core-center of his forearm, all the way through the center of his index and middle knuckles. Do you know what a battering ram looks like? Or, those strikers they use for large Japanese bells? -Your goal is to turn your forearm and first two knuckles into one of those.
