Before watching this, I could never imagine Ed Norton doing a roast. After watching this, I can‘t imagine anyone else roasting the way Ed Norton does. This has been the most intelligent, articulate and well structured roast I have ever seen.
I can't laugh. These are truth. Norton is a great actor and that's how Hollywood doesn't care about him. I watched motherless Brooklyn yesterday and can't stop thinking how it became a box office bomb!!! Even the shit movies don't become a bomb and yet Edward Norton's beautiful direction and acting couldn't convince people to buy his movie. I'm just sad. That's it. I'm really sad Edward Norton, you're my fav actor.
He's one of my all-time favourite actors, but notoriously difficult to work with. I think a lot of directors just don't want to deal with him, he insists on rewriting scripts and taking over the whole thing.
Great roast. Then Dom Irrera follows him: "And it was really good hearing Ed Norton talk about himself so much. I've never seen anyone roast somebody else and talk about themselves so much with that kind of sincerity. ... I've never liked your work, I've never liked you and I gotta tell ya... It's an honor to meet you."
They may be both too neurotic to make it work without killing each other. A movie with the two of them would either be brilliant or an absolute tire fire... I’d probably still watch either way.
I loved this roast. I revisit it several times a year. Never gets old. Now that Bruce's medical issues have come to light I wonder if his reputation for being somewhat difficult to work with, knowing lines etc were behind some of these perceptions? Makes sense to me, but just speculating. Bruce and Ed are very different actors but are both so good at what they do best. I'm glad Ed shared the personal story about him and Bruce. It was a touching human element that people don't get to see very often.
This is why Roast's while a great concept never work, because the comedians never know the person. Norton's fantastic rant is personal and the humor just works on so many levels. Part of the reason I'll always prefer things like the AFI lifetime Achievement, Mark Twain, or Kennedy Honors. Sure they are tamer, but the jokes usually carry a lot more weight.
I still think Ed is the best Hulk ever. Closest to demonstrate the inner pain Banner has. Also i don`t get why people think Ruffalo is a good Hulk. I would say decent but not good. yet again it may be because of the dumb storylines he had so far, which also makes Norton right about wanting a better script.
I believe the difference between them is the same as Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire, Tom is a good Spider-Man, and an okay Peter Parker, but Tobey was a good Spider-Man and a perfect Peter Parker. Mark is a good Hulk and an okay Bruce Banner, Edward was an okay Hulk, but the perfect Bruce Banner.
I've watched so many of these and they're just quite vulgar but this was genuinely well written, with a love underneath which is heartfelt, and as a result was just brilliant. Well played Dick (Ed ;)
In Bruce's defense, his performance in Moonrise Kingdom was like nothing he's done before or since. Very measured and vulnerable. So maybe Ed Norton can't turn on his Inner Bruce Willis, but Bruce Willis can turn on his inner Ed Norton.
