He was. I heard he was pissed at being last. Said he felt like he was better than everybody before him. He thought they made him look like a nobody being last
That was literally most of his career. He was to comedy what Eminem was to rap 15-20 years ago. He could just get up on stage and just say shit without any preparation and still be better than 99% of his peers. Dude was a once-in-a-lifetime talent and he deserved much more then he achieved even with his constant Bridge burning. The saddest thing to me it's him finally realizing how self-sabotaging he was and finally truly trying just as it was too late for the diabetes to take over.
I miss the showstopper one-liners he could cook up on the spot. O&A, "He said 'read this palm, you gypsy bitch'." Oh my God, what a talent, and tragic end.
@marcotaboadabarco9957 what context you lookin for? He's basically saying Patrice was keeping it real because he said the same thing he said here to Sheen about the industry that he did on the Opie and Anthony show.
@@marcotaboadabarco9957 Patrice has talked on many occasions about his dislike of the industry and of "the suits" (i.e. management and lawyers of media corporations etc). So he felt a certain kinship with Sheen for standing up against the industry because Patrice burned many bridges too.
Interesting fact: Patrice was called in last moment for the Roast. Was still writing material on the flight. Then got up there and just went off the cuff.
Took up 2 pages of notes that he wrote on the way over, didn't look at them once doing a killer set off the cuff for an event he was invited to just days before, all while DYING. GOAT.
Jeff Ross knew what he was witnessing. Patrice had 3 days notice and riffed most of this set. He was being set up to fail and he came in there and slaughtered. We lost this man way too soon.
He knew his friend was sick and witnessed him going out on top. There were a few interviews with Patrice before he passed saying the sickness didn’t exist when he was on stage. Truly a brilliant comedian. Cheers man.
@@JohnSmith-rq4gw bruh, patrice have like 144 episodes of appearances at the good ol' opie and anthony show, and that shit was just pure enjoyment, hysteria and meditation, when the brutal truthful humor would shine, which is most of the times patrice was there. one of the classics was patrice saying "i dont like the way white people got comfortable around myke..." which is kinda a racist statement, but the intent was humorous, and that lead to one of the funniest bits ever on the show, it was not only fun it was true as FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFKKKKKKKK. and his legacy of being honestly brutal hindered his carrer but also made him a legend. thus the quote by the original poster 'matt the creator'.
He is saying Seth McFarlanes characters are more famous then he is. His attempts at making his own name large are laughable as he will always be known as the voices guy.
@@betaboog Patrice is highlighting that, because Seth is famous for his voices (and not his image), when in person, he (Seth) exaggerates his persona, to remind people of his talent and achievement. Ie trying to populates his in person aura, with his professional aura, a bit too much.
@@Jeffemcd08 EXACTLY, patrice told on O&A how shatner loved his act and how shatner longed to see more of his stuff, but patrice said "i have diabetes man, i'm not for longing". and then, shatner and his wife talked deeply with him about life and stuff, from with they all cried after their car came up. PATRICE HIMSELF said that they hugged him, and wished to see him more on another events. the episode is "Patrice O'Neal on O&A #134 - Charlie Sheen Is a Real N"
"I refuse to learn his last shitty name. I learned Galifinakis and that's the last shitty name this nigga's gonna learn in this fuckin funky town" Dude was too funny. I miss him greatly.
belzart2001 absolutely. the rape story, it's cold out here, telling norton and jefferies they're both gay, all the different conspiracy talks... but my favorite moment will always be his laugh when he first met Bobo and played the up and down game. And if you've never seen it, search for it on here... look for Patrice's appearance on the green room with paul provenza.
DontTreadOnUsBlog Haha! I hadn't seen his appearance on the green room either. Look up (if you haven't already seen it) Kevin Hart catches Patrice jerking off. He calls in. It's one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
Am not sure if he was doing joke jokes, but more like a small routine of stand up. Everything was connected and transitioned. Maybe cause it was he's nature, cause he was naturally funny and if there's such thing; a stand up by nature. Comedy still hurts with out him and Giraldo
"Good jokes, for me, will make 50% of the people die laughing, and 50% will be mortified". Mission accomplished Mr O'neal 🙏🏾❤️ The Sheen/Estevez joke was legendary 😂
I did stand up in the 80's in RI, Boston, NYC, & LA.... Patrice's "Elephant in the Room", from a technical standpoint is THE perfect set, I'd place Greg Giraldo:s "mid life vices" a close second, both masters of their craft
@@matttherrien9608 What sort of sad fuckface can't even be racist properly, Matt? Put some effort into it. Maybe you weren't trying to be racist I suppose... if you're trying to be like your pal Anthony and make jokes based on edgy material you actually need to have a joke though, for future reference.
Whats crazy is after this roast, Patrice saw William Shatner in the parking garage and begin 2 cry and tell him he knew he was gonna die soon and that he wasn't ready 2 die but that October of 2011 he went into the hospital and never made it back out!! He died the following month!! He was a genius and 1 of the greatest 2 ever do it!! If he was here, Dave Chapelle would have a run 4 his money because Patrice would have taken the comedy throne!! R.I.P Patrice, u are definitely missed!!
I get goosebumps seeing this person (2:36,)😭 High, higher, highest 🤪 I wonder how does this person feel and think years later about Patrice his joke? Watching yourself 🤣🤣 on RU-vid? RIP Patrice ❤️🇳🇱
And who's fault is it? He knew since around since he was 21 or 23 years old. Even a decade later he still had time to change his habits to be at least 60. He later said he didn't care enough about staying alive. He tried to change and watched what he ate but too little too late. He had to make the decision himself and nobody could tell him what to do so another big one gone. The closest 'big' one to make it was John Pinette. He had surgery and lost a lot of weight but didn't take enough time to recuperate doing stand up and theater on stage and he died. Ralphie just increased in weight till he was gone.
@@LordOfHam Charlie got cancelled way back in the day, then proceeded to go out trashing Hollywood in lots of interviews. Patrice had supported him because he thought Hollywood was slimy as well. He always respected people who got cancelled for not giving a fuck
So much of his comedy is in those pauses...when he's looking up and trying to think of how to articulate what he is saying. It really makes you listen because it's like he is about to say some shit that no one ever says...'cause it gives you the sense that he's speaking from the heart.
Dude knew he was dying and just went in on any target around him. Norm McDonald’s last joke hit like that too. It was a hitler joke, and the punch line was “I didn’t even know he was sick!” So boom, he dies, and ever celebrity interviewed about the topic goes “I didn’t even know he was sick!” Comedians are tragic geniuses
Norm's jokes were always convoluted and long-winded (and I mean this in the best way possible, cuz only Norm could make that work), but people only catching the punchline MONTHS after the fact, and only after he had died--that was perhaps the most far-out and insane setup for a joke in history. He had that shit planned out and knew people were gonna catch the real meaning of the punchline only after he was dead, knowing he'd never be able to relish his fans' reaction. I'm happy he's up in Heaven with Jesus now. That ol chunk of coal earned it.
@Vegeta Saiyajin you’re obviously young and dont know patrice was one of the most organically funny people ever to walk the planet. His specials were fantastic but he was the best on O&A just talking shit. Check this quick clip somone animated ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uwz4wtdnR6Q.html
@Vegeta Saiyajin lol i've seen you comment in this video like 10 times, different days. Same comment and then talk about hurting feelings?? yeah you really know what funny is lmao
According to Rich Vos, this set was like 95% improvised, on the spot. It's amazing that someone could be such a comedic genius- he walked on stage, in front of a huge audience and the whole world, and just talked, and killed in a way nobody else could, even with written material.
The way his voice was cracking at the end. He knew his time was almost done, and that this was probably the last time he would get to talk to the people there. It makes his jokes more than just jokes, but the honest-to-god truth
@@acog_quarks8753 Er.... when he says about Amy Schumer when she mentions his Grandmother's arsehole: "I been sitting next to this bitch the whole time....I didn't know this was coming..." - then yeah, he can't take it.
George Roy 'Tiger blood ..shit .he is selling his blood ' damn .great line ! He was on the cusp of stardom but he was not a healthy guy n he left us too soon !
Any time I'm feeling down, I come back and watch this, and it always puts me in a better mood. This is by far the best set from any of the roasts. The best part, is he did it all on the fly. Patrice was a comedic genius. I hope he's resting well.
In no particular order Dave Chappelle, George Carlin, Patrice O'Neal, Paul Mooney, Eddie Murphy, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Martin Lawrence, Chris Rock (mid 90's version lol)
I would put Ross on my top 20...no denying his wit and he's a smart dude. Patrice O'Neal said that backstage of this roast, Jeff Ross asked him, "Patrice why are you dressed like a gay referee?" Hahahahahahahahhaha
He discussed the post-roast briefly on a podcast, can't remember whose it was, but basically said Patrice & he truly had never met before, always seemed to be booked a day off from the other, and so they had never even casually spoken back in the green room or anything, and he and patrice happened to end up being on the same elevator up to their respective suites and he said he remembers saying it was an honor to be on the dais with a legend like him, and Patrice nodded and chuckled and told him that "too few black people" line was ruthless, and that he wasn't expecting it, especially since Anthony's "Tyson-Richard Pryor album joke" didn't land. Anthony told him he'd been waiting to say that exact line to SOMEBODY Black for years but had always forgotten it and then it was too late when he would remember it a couple of minutes later, and so they both laughed and said our best lines tonight happened to be improv rather than written material, and so they went their separate ways, and not even seven days later, Patrice was dead. Anthony looked down and sighed and told the podcast host he regretted going to bed early that evening instead of having some drinks and shooting the sh!t with O'Neal. #Rip
noamshouseparty It was in response to them saying they had gone back and watched this clip numerous times over the years. The clip has only been available on this channel for a year, I took it literal instead of assuming they found other clips of this set on RU-vid and so forth.
They tried to set Patrice up with the last second call to the roast, but Patrice shined even brighter. He truly meant every word he said to Charlie Sheen too, he really admired him for standing up against the beast.. and, winning. Charlie Sheen, and Mel Gibson, are two that fought the beast, and won. Two icons, two legends, that shall forever be immortalized for their battles.. then you have Patrice, a true God amongst men, miss you big guy! Wish you were here.
The craziest part about Patrice to me is that he never changed what he believed in. His entire “crew” of comics says to this day that Patrice was the better comic of the bunch but Patrice wouldn’t make the changes “the industry” wanted him to make to be more marketable to a broader audience
Rethink his career? Almost everything he’s ever done turned to gold. His movies make money and his show has made ungodly sums of money. Please tell me what aspect of his career didn’t go well so he should’ve rethought it?
He's not a leading man unless he's voicing someone lol. Did you see how badly A Million Ways to Die in the West did? It wasn't until he did The Orville that he finally got some traction being an actor on screen. @@jasondashney
@@DixieWrekt04I mean from a money aspect, you’re right. He shouldn’t have rethought shit. But a quality aspect and wanting to be really good at something? Should’ve rethought all of that shit. He’s nothing more than the guy who did 100 voices on 1 cartoon that got overran and boring after its 6th season
I remember him discussing Charlie Sheen on O&A, how he stood up to the beast. Patrice refused to play the game, and had great respect for anyone that does up to the system
This is actually his greatest moment and it's such a fantastic thing to leave as his legacy before dying. He didn't even have time to write jokes before he got the call to get on a plane and join at the last minute. He wrote most of the jokes on the way there which is why he was holding his papers with his jokes and scrolling through. He disregarded most of his material because it no longer fit and he instead was just honest with everyone and it was the funniest set all night. And that's exactly how it should have went, because that's what he was best known for: of-the-cuff humor. It was literally the best thing that could have happened for the show that night and his legacy. RIP Patrice, you were the realest comedian to ever exist. It's just the truth. Everyone else is a close second.
This was hilarious in how raw and honest this was. Dude was not joking. Also, Tyson holding Jeff at 5:15, and Patrice ending words to Charlie at the end were priceless. You can tell those came from the heart, and he really did respect Charlie for standing up for himself and telling it like it is.
I dont even know the guy but i miss him . his appearances on O&A and his own show the Black Phillip show among other radio appearances are all I really ever listen to , to help me get through the day . Hes number one imo. the greatest comedian ever in my book . In his last O&A appearance one of the last things he said was he just wanted to be remembered ,well it's sad to know that he won't ever know how much he is missed . His advice on women and life , prioritizing your happiness above all else really changed my life and every now and then I find myself tearing up knowing that there will never be another Patrice O'Neal. God rest his soul .
Even after almost ten years since his passing, I still can't get used to talking about him in the past tense. At least once every year I go through all his O&A appearances, what a legend this guy was.
@@Ahch. I remember when I was new to Patrice too. I'd listened to a Louis CK on O&A playlist, at the end there was a tribute to Patrice. I was like "Who's this guy." I started his O&A playlist and that was like 8 years ago. Bleh.
William Shatner said that after this show, he and his wife met Patrice in the parking garage, and had a moment, and Patrice told them how he wanted to die, and the 3 of them had a cry. I just can't watch this the same after hearing him tell the story.
"I'm dying of diabetes and I gotta listen to this shit..." Patrice was 100% metal in this performance. He had nothing to lose and gained everything. I lost it when he looked at Sheen and was like "He's like Christian Slater. He's good, but he sucks at the same time..."
He is so good. His insults are not just “hahaha” and you forget about it. His actually stings on a personal level. It’s so clever and very well constructed.
This was my introduction to Patrice. Never saw anything like it. I was intrigued by his off-the-cuff style, taking pauses to find words and breaking off sentences halfway through. It's rough around the edges, but the jokes land super hard. I thought he did it that way to make it feel more real among all the rehearsed sets with pre-written jokes. Now I realize that this actually was mostly improvised, which is genius.
He wrote it on the plane apparently. It was a last minute decision, whereas apparently the normal invitees would spend weeks, if not months writing jokes.
I love the way other comedians look at Patrice, it’s respect, admiration, and an acknowledgement of talent. You don’t see that very often in the comedy world.
Single funniest roast set ever, and brutally honest too. You can see Patrice's true self in some moments here. He knew the end was near and blessed us by letting us in, even if just for a tiny bit. RIP the legend.
I've gotta disagree on that @Larry David. While Patrice is one of my top 3 of all time comedians, I firmly believe that another dead hero did a couple of roast sets that were even better: Greg Giraldo. Giraldo wasn't on the same level as Patrice as an all round comic, but his sets on the Joan Rivers and Larry the Cable Guy roasts were pure gold. Definitely recommend giving those a watch if you haven't already seen them. They're brutal. RIP to both Patrice and Greg, gone way too soon...
Even though they’re being roasted and laughing, their eyes show how much respect that have for him, especially Anthony and Seth. Almost like a star struck glare.
He's so right about seth macfarlane, the dude expresses himself through brian and stewie, brian is who he thinks of himself as, stewie is the repressed aspect of his personality coming out. Still, he's my favorite gay celebrity after rob halford.
Patrice was one of the greatest and funniest comedians. I was lucky to have the pleasure of meeting him and communicating with online. Rest In Peace big guy..🙏✝️🕊
When I was a kid, I never thought much of this appearance because I did not know of Patrice back then. Now as an adult, I have consumed many hours of him on Opie and Anthony and his standup. His peers and those who worked with him hold him in such high regard. Seeing this again now, I realize this was Patrice absolutely nailing everyone. The jokes may not have been refined but that’s because it’s just him being him and commanding a room the way he always did. Total legend this man was and it’s a crying shame we are hurling through the universe on this rock of doom without him.
