Moisture plays a big part in its growth, so if its a dry year water we'll until it gets going and mulch around your plant in spring to help retain moisture, I use a mulch from plantgrow uk, I've done a RU-vid on their mulch with contact details, I grow arundo donax macrophylla a green form and it does well ever on a drier soil once it's established.

Hi, most of my Miscanthus are grown in the ground, but to answer your question, yes, a large whisky barrel is good to grow them in, you must remember to water regularly and feed them in spring with a general feed that also contains high nitrogen content, which variety are you going to grow?

That's great I wanted to grow the miscanthus giganteus all green one I was worried about putting it in the ground

You cut them down to the ground in February, and they do come back yearly

Just pull off the outer leaves but not before September

Unfortunately, the nature of some miscanthus such as giganteus is to lose the lower leaves, smaller varieties don't do this .
