Bravo, Elman! Long after all of us are gone, violinists the world over will still be speaking of and studying Elman. They will know nothing of us and everything of him. And that my dear friends is an extremely comforting thought giving the inanity of some of the comments here. cheers.

I'm watching this bloke because my grandfather referred to him in his memoirs.

I agree he wasn't on his best form here. It's not that he was simply past his prime, because he gave an amazingly fine recital in London (and on BBC radio) several years later.

Well, I really enjoy Elman's playing in many things, but I cannot say that I enjoy this. His tempo turns it into a horse race to see who gets to the end first, him or the orchestra. Go listen to Kreisler himself play this, and you will understand what elegant playing is all about!

Sounds like your dodging elman as an Edsel in favor of the rolls Royce of tone, Kreisler. I agree.

Must have just read Alice in wonderland before performing. "Hurry hurry mustn't be late!"

Generally, I love Elman's playing, but something is a bit "off" about his interpretation here. I have several recordings of Kreisler playing this, and not only is his intonation better, but Kreisler takes a much more relaxed tempo. I also heard Kreisler live in 1947 in Chicago, and he had to play this piece 4 times as encores before the audience would let him off the stage.

not his best and he has a mental lapse. but it's cool to see the old master in form, the bow technique, the posture, the direct but angular line into the instrument. if anyone thinks "aw first time to hear/see elman what a let down" search for his performance of the bruch concerto. out of this freaking world and a better example of what he was really about

Dreadful? Maybe that there are a lot of things to improve! But I would listen to him 1000 times more than to any perfrect uncharismatic machine- violin player, where everything "is on his place"!!!

what a wonderful singing violin. bow, synchronisation phrasing could be done better. in the whole there's playing a genuis. his play is like an old guranerius - not perfect built but phantastic- he's got something almost nobody has got!! if he would have practised good it would be better....
