The mallet honestly makes it more extreme in my opinion. Maybe its because dismemberment is so overplayed in modern horror and thrillers but the way the ankles snap is so much more visceral.

With you there. Part of me would rather lose my foot than have it all floppy and dangly like that. And you just know they never healed properly.

Agreed I flinch more at limbs being bent the wrong way than dismemberment

I feel the same way. Plus BOTH feet got the mallet. Only one got the ax.

For such a simple movie about two people in a room, there is SO MUCH fun trivia. We had to leave a lot on the cutting room floor.

@TheStephenKingdom Agreed! It was actually one of the first books I read from Stephen King and I watched the movie immediately afterwards. Really stuck with me with the brutality of both!

@@owltakizawa Misery is a lot of things, but brutal is probably the most spot on 😄 And King's writing is so visceral that you really feel like you're stuck in the room with Paul and Annie, watching all of this horrible stuff happening

Stephen King’s rendering of the hobbling scene is so visceral and gruesome, the movie makes it seem a lot simpler. Kathy Bates deserved that Oscar though.

Yeah, she was awesome. I think she paved the way for Jodie Foster winning the Oscar for another horror/thriller, The Silence of the Lambs.

It was so intense! I read the book, a very long time ago after I had watched the film. Immediately I knew I was this movies biggest fan. Lol but really reading it after seeing it was so much worse. It did make my stomach turn badly.

I am glad that I checked this out. I have a horror scene in the novel that I am working on and I needed to hear you read that scene. Stephen King is definitely on of the best writers and that section was near-perfect, but I still have no interest in reading any more Stephen King that what I already have.

It’s such an iconic scene. I can list 10 separate instances of other films and tv shows aping it directly or obliquely just off the top of my head.

Just goes to show -- all you need is a room and two legendary actors to make movie magic.

Oh thank God William hurt didn't play Paul Sheldon. Ironically for a man named after an emotion, William hurt fails to display any.

At that point I think the audience would just be rooting for Annie the whole time 😄

it's like all the emotions at the same time, like if emotions had an emotion
