Meet Dubliner Olivia Treacy, the new Miss Ireland.
A few days after becoming Miss Ireland, Olivia Treacy a 23 year old model from Terenure talks about her win and thoughts on representing Ireland in the Miss World contest.
From the minute I started, I loved my work. It never really seemed like work to me.
Olivia Treacy believes beauty competitions are anything but degrading to women.
They’ve got see what you’re going to look like in an evening dress. They’ve got to see what you’re going to look like in swimwear. I don’t really think it’s degrading. It’s just very very practical.

Olivia Treacy finished in the top six in the Miss World contest.

Olivia was my neighbour growing up. She was such a cool adult from a kids perspective. She often organized impromptu fashion shows in her garden, where we would strut down a makeshift runway with all the kids, draped in colorful scarves and oversized hats. On lazy summer afternoons, she’d gather us for storytelling sessions, weaving tales of far-off lands and magical creatures. She really got the neighbours to be quite social. Once she caught me doing a nik-nak on her door once, and said ‘next time I’m marching you down to gardaí’, and started bursting out laughing. Very cool lady!

Wow! She's stunning! And smart! And down to Earth! I loved her answer to the ignorant question the interviewer asked regarding if it was degrading to get on stage and in front of many with swimwear on! How terribly crass a question! But, I suppose, considering it was Ireland in early 1980s, I can forgive it!

Belfield Lake at UCD. Brings back memories from 1978 to 1982 when I was there. I just looked her up on Google. Apparently she would have been a student at UCD around the same time as I was but I don’t remember her from then. I moved to NY in 1984 and she came to NY in 1994. She lives in LA now. She was born in 1960 …. I was born in 1959. I am sure she was part of the elite group of girls at that time in UCD who probably hung out with PV Doyle’s daughter Bernie Gallagher (Nee Doyle). Us mere mortals were all in awe of these “hot” girls 😂
