A lot of comments here feel that Venezuela should have won. But I remember watching the final interview of the finalists. They were all asked who, living or dead , did they admire the most. Venezuela said she admired a lot of people rather than say just one person. The other finalists all chose a man, but Austria chose a woman. She said she admired Romy Schneider, the late Austrian actress who also had a sad life. My mother noticed this and said that is why she won.
My personal opinion, Venezuela is the true winner this night with Austria as the second best, however Miss Venezuela was sacrificed because they won Miss World 1981 and Miss World 1984, including a recent Miss Universe 1986. So they demoted her to second place and give the crown to the second best

The moment when they called out miss Iceland as the 3rd place, we knew the queen of Europe would be at least in top 2, since Austria obviously has higher placement in the result than Iceland. Therefore, if Austria is not the runner up, she has to be the winner.

She started to celebrate before the announcement was made. Janelle Commissiong from Trinidad and Tobago became the first black Miss Universe. At Miss World, Austria acted like a racist at the outgoing Miss World from Trinidad and Tobago. Miss World 1986 was trying to congratulate Austria and she ignored her. hay algunas persnas que no entienden ni QUIEREN entender que est concurso no tiene nada que ver co m.u. son DOS ESTILOS muy distintos. este es mas clasico,elegante y glamoroso. es europeo y llevara su traza del continente. la musica? por Dios! es el himno que sonara con cada ganadora! algunos querran una bachata o una cumbia,pero no es asi y nunca lo sera. eso pal m.u. esos si saben hacer de un evento como este algo absolutamente comercial y ganara el mejor postor!
Guam and Venezuela were more complete beauties. They were gorgeous with magnetic personalities and very cool under the pressure during interviews. Austria and Iceland had the two worst interviews.

Exactly! I think that killed the suspense for the winner and the viewers! She should know she won after Venezuela was called as the first runner up because she is Queen of Europe and Iceland placed as second runner up.

Porque en esos años ochentas de Venezuela a Miss Mundo mandaban a las chicas mas bonitas, y a Miss Universo a las chavas menos bonitas, ejemplo este año Albani es mucho mas bella que Ines Maria Calero

ahora bien que haces referencia al escandalo de las Fotos de la austriaca la Organizacion le pidio a Albani que asumiera el titulo pero ella en Diciembre de 1987 se caso Con Manuel Alfredo Toro a meses de entregar la corona y por eso la organizacion paso por alto ese escandalo

edwinpobletez. Este su competencia, Miss Mundo. De todos maneras Miss Mundo es tan importante en otros países como Miss Universo y se dice que las portadoras de los títulos son las mujeres más bellas del planeta, o sea que es casi lo mismo 😄
