I am a backcountry wilderness photographer. I have spent more time alone deep in the mountains than most would ever believe. I have backpacked thousands of miles in the California wilderness/mountains while completely alone. Spent hundreds of nights alone in the mountains. Never had one incident that weirded me out or gave me the creeps, and I've even camped near old remote plane crash sites where people definitely died. I have since moved to the PNW, and after a few years of doing my thing up here, I must say - I have been creeped out *many times* in certain parts of the wilderness/mountains up here. Definitely the distinct and present feeling of being watched/not alone. Chills & that animal instinct that tell you to leave a place. I'm not one to believe in supernatural things, but the feelings I have gotten in some areas of the Washington/Oregon wilderness are unlike anything I've ever experienced. Still don't know what to make of it.

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t have your level of experience but I have enough experience to feel comfortable and prepare well for hiking/camping in the wilderness. I grew up in a fairly rural area of upstate New York and logged more weekends than I can count, through Boy Scouts, camping in the Adirondacks. Since then my fiancé and I have visited a decent amount of National Parks on the east coast (Acadia and Shenandoah most recently). I also lived out in Arizona for a couple years and completed a few weekend treks out in the desert. Last year we spent a week out in WA and visited Mt. Rainier, Olympic, and North Cascades. I can’t say anything horrific happened but the feel up there is totally different. I enjoyed the scenery but I had one eye over our shoulders the entire time. The feeling of unease was unlike anywhere else. I’ve also been unsure what to make of it and for awhile I thought maybe it was just that I was unfamiliar with the environment. However, both before and since then I’ve ventured out in places I’d never been before and never felt what I did there. I’d still recommend people visit, especially Rainier and Cascades, but I’d stress caution and preparation. It was also great to hear your story as it’s both comforting and concerning to hear it wasn’t just in my head lol

Paulides himself insists that a person such as yourself, with your particular nomadic habits, absolutely MUST get a personal locator beacon to carry with you while you're alone so far from civilization. He says this is one of the primary tools that would either prevent, deter, or at least illuminate the details around these strange missing persons profiles. He explains that there are locators that don't require any subscriptions, and those are the ones to go for. He's hypothesized that the act itself of preparing against these disappearances occurring in a conscious manner seems to be a possible deterrent against them, as though whatever it may be is more reluctant to leave any trace of it's activity.

I remember September 26th 2019, my husband and I were going on the Appalachian trail in Shenandoah park. Now this trail was open to the public and we definitely aren't the type to go off trail since we knew people get lost for days or go missing, but it seemed as through the trail wasn't used for a while. We hiked for about 1/8 of a mile, and all of a sudden I heard something and felt like someone or something was watching us and waiting. We've notice our dog was getting nervous and suddenly, he wanted to turn around. Our dog never does that! We immediately thought we should too. I swear our dog saved us because we felt there was something waiting for us around the corner. Very chilling 😨 when we turned around, we were watching our backs and were prepared to fight since we felt like we were being followed. I remember this day since the next day my husband proposed to me!! I'm so grateful we made it out a live and we're now married with a bright future ❤️ Moral of the story: Listen to your instinct and furry companion. It might just save your life 😉

My brother and I were backcountry camping in the Shenandoah's in the middle to late '70's. We were way off the beaten track out in the middle of the woods. Early in the morning, there was some large creature breaking huge branches as it approached our camp site. We could tell it was large by the large crack the sounds made. And later, after comparing notes, we determined that it was bipedal. As it approached just outside my tent, we heard some grunting and snorting. My brother (in his tent) had heard the noises and responded to my worried voice ('James, do you hear that?!") and thankfully said "We have guns and we will shoot you!". Just then, whatever it was backed up and slowly walked away. We don't know what it was, but we will never forget it. Earlier as we were setting up camp, I noticed that the woods were dreadfully quiet, not a single sound from locusts, birds, anything. I had this weird feeling too that we were being watched the entire time. I had never conveyed that feeling to my brother at the time, because I thought I was being unnecessarily fearful. As we compared notes later, we thought it was strange that whatever it was decided to back up and leave our encampment, after, hearing my brothers threat to shoot. Either that was a coincidence, or it understood our intent, or even understood some English. We will never know. Our story is on Dixie Cryptid (program entitled Bigfoot Home Invasion Marathon_52 dated 11-21-19) and on The Facts How to Hunt. Its great that you listened to your instincts that day. I still feel lucky that we made it out of there alive.

A lot of these people that actually were found were with out clothes, even in snow and harsh weather. I just wanted to note people in the final stages of hypothermia engage in "paradoxical undressing" because, as they lose rationality and their nerves are damaged, they feel incredibly, irrationally hot. They strip off their clothes to cool themselves down as they are freezing to death.

I was way out in the middle of the woods in Oregon one day target shooting when a man ran in front of me as I'm actively shooting yelling at me that he owned the land i was shooting on. He was dirty with long hair and looked pretty rough. I was so shocked to see anyone i just told him i would leave even though i was certain i was on national forest land. I drove all around there to see if there was anything else out there like a house. All i could find was more woods. counter - skeptic points... - Hypothermia may cause some people to take their shoes and clothes off...BUT IT CANNOT give anyone the ability to traverse extended distances barefoot...period - Criminals are bound by gravity, just like natural predators...which means they will leave molecular evidence of their approach and egress that is differentiatable from the victim, detectable as scent by search dogs. THERE WILL BE PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF EARTH CONTACT. ie tracks...upon approach., upon contact between predator and prey, and upon the predators departure, now also bearing the weight of prey.....

If you want a nice vacation at Mt. Rainer there is a nice lodge with Alpine meadow and lake nearby! You can also stay at the Paradise Lodge and rent bikes, and go on a nice picnic in the sunshine, and ride around the area on bike and walking trails! If your young or feeling up to it, you can hike a very steep hill trail, that takes you up past the timber line to view bald eagles, and a panoramic view of all the Mt. tops all around! Good for a sunny day, in the summer if you are young and healthy! Not for small kids, pets, sick folks, seniors or weak legs etc! Its a hard and very, very steep trail for summer only! And I remember having to pull myself up by the roots of the trees sticking out along side the trail! I also got very light headed as the elevation is so high up there, not a lot of oxygen! Makes you very light headed and dizzy! Had to lay down and rest, but it was a beautiful view and sunny summer day, and we got to see several bald eagles up close and the panoramic view of all the Mountains all around! So pretty up there! There is no way, I could pull myself up that trail today! I could not do that hike today! No Way! Its only for the younger sporty set only!!! But well worth the view!

Never wear red- most people that go missing in national Forest were wearing red (ever heard of little red Riding Hood) 3. Share your tent or keep all of your tents very close 4. Never go anywhere alone, always take someone with you and never split up even when relieving yourself. 5. If traveling with children never let them walk behind you, keep them in front of you at all times. 6. Keep your weapon close. Gun, knife, taser, pepperspray, etc. Whatever your weapon is make sure you can access it quickly and always be mindful of it. Never forget your weapon. 7. Stay away from random stairs, chairs, arches, house or out of place things and structures- Ignore them quickly get away from them. 8. Ignore the sounds of a crying baby, ignore the sounds of a crying baby. 9. Be wary and cautious of strangers. 10. I personally have a Garmin Instinct with Satellite capabilities and can locate my exact 10 digit grid location making it easier to navigate back to a known location on a map easier. What I find to be very peculiar is that the National Park Service and the department of the interior does not have a centralized data base for these 411 cases. Now I've never been one for conspiracy theories, but if you consider that in this day and age the government and law enforcement agencies have data bases for just about everything, but not one for missing persons in National Parks. It almost seems like the Park Service and the Interior are trying keep these cases on the down low. So question is why? And are they trying to hide something?

If the National Park Service goes through the trouble of developing a database of every missing person in their parks, then it would almost be an acknowledgment that something bad is going on in these park an and they are aware of it. They hey can’t do that because it’s like an admission that they can’t figure it out either which would indicate some type of serious problem in their parks…..and it’s their duty to warn people. Also, it leaves the park service open to litigation if they admit there’s a problem that’s out of their control. They just blame it on the usual reasons; the person got lost and froze to death or they fell into a deep crevasse or they fell off a cliff, etc….. I know that there are people who go hiking who should not be hiking, especially alone with no firearm or anything to protect them. Stay on the marked trail folks and stay off the granite boulders. That’s a great way to get struck by lightening walking in that granite, especially at Yosemite.

Finding out all the disappearances in WA state, I have stopped going hiking, and have cautioned my family to do so as well!! Mt. Rainier has a huge cluster, and people are unaware of any if all of the disappearances they're hiking in! And that's BS! What's ridiculous is that when some families have offered to pay the expensives for searching.. they've still been told no. I'm sure there's several people who would volunteer their time to put together data bases for each park, and then they could all be added to one page and be updated by individual parks.

My ex boyfriend hit the summit on Mt. Rainer, and one of my girl friends also trained for 6 months and also hit the summit on Mt. Rainer! But be warned its not an easy hike, nor for beginners at all! The terrain is rocky, and many people fall and break their legs! I am a local WA hiker and camper, and the window for Mt. Rainer is JUL-AUG-SEP window in the SUMMER! The weather can change on you in a snap! And go from sunny to a full on storm easy! The terrain is thick, bushy and rocky, so its easy to slip and fall or twist your ankle or break your leg in a fall! Then your stuck! And search and rescue has to save your butt in a helicopter! So if you are planning to conquer Mt. Rainer and hit the summit? Prepare in advance, bring your gear with you, including first aid kit, layer your clothing, bring a tent, sleeping bag, knife, ropes, wear hiking boots and layer your clothing, don't go alone! Bring along several friends, and stay in the window of access to the summit! Otherwise you will be dealing with a lot of rain, snow and dangerous conditions, and may fall and break your legs or not come back! So always check in at the Rangers Station first, and get a map of the area you will be going to! And pack your gear! The ones who don't come back, get lost or injured don't bring anything with them, don't know where they are going, or the area, or the weather...no planning! Not even hiking boots or a pack, tent, or sleeping bag, or sweater?!! And worse they go it alone? Now that is crazy! Its like someone just wandering off in tennis shoes and windbreaker alone, to have a picnic on K2? WHAT? NO! Plan ahead, bring the proper gear with you, don't go alone, check in at the Rangers Station EVERY TIME! AND CHECK OUT WHEN YOU GET BACK! BE SMART AND WISE, IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE AND YOUR LEGS YO! The problem with David Paulides is the fact he sells the paranormal theories and omits key details of actual cases to make the stories more mysterious. For instance the Thomas Messick case. I am from New York and after researching this case I found witnesses in the hunting party that stated to reporters that Thomas did not stay on watch and walked east. Additionally, members of the search party stated sections of the woods were not thoroughly searched as David suggested. He either didn't do enough research or clearly omitted information on purpose. I have no law enforcement background and I had no problem finding out more information than he did. People get lost in the woods, it is not UFOs, bigfoot, portholes to other dimensions, or insert your other favorite paranormal phenomenon.

case #1 (McGrogin). He got lost. -lost sense of direction. He was able to go that far (the wrong way) because he was an athlete. He took off clothes because hypothermia victims feel hot. Clothing removal is a known behavior. Also, hypothermia affects the brain, and people do "crazy" things. He fell off the cliff, breaking his hip and skull which killed him. But he was near death before that. He was found miles away, so that is a huge, snow-covered area to search. It's not surprising that he wasn't found alive, and that it took that amount of time to find the body. This is tragic. It's not mysterious, and there is no need to speculate about foul play, aliens, or supernatural. He got lost. Occam's razor.

Had a strange thing happen to me once, There is a National Forest about 35 miles from me in Florida, During the cool months like to go walking in it, Has a lot of abandoned farms in it from the 1910's when the park was created. I always have my cell phone on full charge and have a battery back up,,, I like recording things, I started walking up a path that I walked a lot of times, I stay on the path never get off it, I walked around a curve in the path and saw a Lake, A lake that I never saw before a nice Lake Then I heard some voices of kids playing.. I look up the the path along the lake a family with a Van was parked there having a cook out kids playing, thought it was strange because there was no roads for miles away.. Then when I look again across the lake there was a huge mountain on the other side of the lake, In Florida do not have Mountains, I went to take my phone out to take a photo, The battery was dead so I went to get the Battery Charger out hooked it up and it was dead... I started to feel weird about it I started to go back the way I came I then started seeing areas of the path that I remember and then eventually got back to the parking lot,, I saw a park ranger so told him what happen,,, He said that I was lucky to get back officially no one has turn up missing, unofficially I would not want my family to walk that path,, Others are OK but there is something about that path that is just not right

David Paulides originally named it 411 because he identified 411 cases that fit his criteria. That was around the time his first two books came out - I heard him interviewed by George Knapp and it was bone chilling. It makes sense that he would keep the ‘411’ for the reason you mentioned - it definitely grabs your attention.

You contend that “paradoxical undressing is a common phenomenon,” I wonder, on what evidence do you base that claim? I have seen no evidence that “paradoxical undressing is common”- look at all the frozen hikers on the side of Mt. Everest. Their last acts before freezing were to bundle up in their big coats as best they could, none of them started stripping down, despite being so cold they actually end up passed away because of it.

I live in the Appalachian Mountains, and there’s a park near where I live that has about a 2 mile long trail that surrounds a small island and is connected by a bridge going over a river. Bears and deer live on the little island, so seeing animals up there isn’t unusual, and plenty of fisherman are up there catfishing at night. A few of my friends wanted to go walk the trail at night (we live in a small town, not a lot to do in the evening) so we all got ready and went up there. As we were approaching the “entrance” where the trees start to get thick, I got overwhelmed with this deep primal fear that we absolutely should not finish crossing the rest of the bridge. My fear must’ve been reciprocated or at the very least, convincing enough, for them to agree to turn around. I still don’t know what was in the trees but there definitely was something there.

A couple of issues you brought up that I’ve researched and found alternate results. Dogs can smell people even after precipitation and sometimes it can last for a long while. I agree that some of the points can probably be explained in certain circumstances, yet when you compare his case studies and these particular points of interest to how normal search and rescue missions work and end up you begin to recognize how bizarre these missing 411 cases stand out. I believe it’s somewhere around 95% of missing people are found within 48 hours or up to a week if they’re found dead. Edit: it’s not really a paradox for a hunter to be a conservationist. Many of the most active conservationists are hunters. They may eat meat, but they also understand what’s needed to ensure a healthy environment. You do a great job.

Easily number 3 is the most eerie and strange. Someone who was well prepared with bear spray and a revolver and who knew the path he was on well enough to know where reception would be not only somehow goes off the path but also fires 4 shots at... something. That's eerie. They say they saw no bear tracks but I wouldn't rule out animal attack entirely. Maybe a cougar or something like that scared him. But what's more creepy is the idea that he ran into another person. Wonderful video btw

It’s not a paradox to love animals and also hunt them. Hunting is a natural human activity. We are just starting out on our own homestead and I will tell you we are animal lovers to the highest degree, yet we are raising our own animals for meat. Where does everyone think the meat in the grocery store or at chipotle come from?? And you don’t even want me to get into what factory farming is like, but let’s just say it’s horrific compared to slaughtering your home raised livestock to nourish your family and local community.

I'm not saying he's doing it for attention, just that if the main goal is to raise awareness of the problem, then it makes sense to compile the most intriguing and compelling cases in your list.

Lots of people say things like they wandered off and got hyperthermia and started to go insane. What about the Deorr case. He was a toddler. There’s no way he could of “wandered” off so fast before he was found because the moment they realized he was missing they started to look for him. At some point they would of found him walking around or sitting down crying somewhere. I mean he’s a baby. So it’s like everybody that gets lost doesn’t scream for help? Or a scream heyyy I’m lost can anybody hear me? Idk it’s just strange how they don’t get found at all.

Then dragged there bodys away for perhaps kilometers over steep terrain only to remove there boots and only those then return the body back to a position the search and rescue teams already covered? I dont think any of them fit the profile really they are all very bizzare....the child one i would have to aggree may have been a killer but the rest :S.

In the Mike Peterson case..did they find his gun? I don't remember if you mentioned that. But if they did, was it tested to see if it was recently shot? Because how would he have got out 4 rounds while potentially drowning? Or left it somewhere else with other belongings when he took it for his own safety..

This is a good question. The gun was found in Mike Peterson's backpack. I struggled to find if they did a GSW test on his hands or tested to see if the gun was fired; that was a question I had too. His case was under-publicized with only a few articles describing the events.

Ok if you ever have time to watch "missing 411 The Hunted" near the end of the show there is this woman Jan who was sitting quietly in a tree stand waiting for movement to start hunting when she said the forest went dead quiet you could hear a pin drop and she knew something was very wrong so she sat quietly listening and watching and all of a sudden there was a shift in the trees that looked like a huge transparent blob (reminds me of predator) and she saw it shimmer and shift over from one tree to the next tree with a blob of a hand and she couldnt understand what she was looking at. Anyways she stayed very quietly hidden in the tree stand and eventually the sounds of the forest returned but it was a while before she came down tree. Know what I'm thinking that's probably how some of these things surprise us humans and we don't see them coming to kidnap us cause they can be damn invisible!

There are things in nature that have been known to the natives for thousands of years AND there are also high sciences and technologies we have no idea about (think Large Hadron Collider at CERN and its effects, think about movies like Predator, the Mist, the Id monster from the movie forbidden planet, etc.) Definitely makes you wonder.
