DrivesDownUnder Auckland uses an old system where stormwater and sewage travel in the same pipes. Basically after heavy rain when the drain system is at capacity and cannot dispose of all the water at the wastewater treatment plant, an overflow system kicks in dumping this waster water through pipes leading to many Auckland beaches. Therefore it is not recommended to swim within 48hrs of rain in Auckland due to the risk of fecal matter in the water leading to illness. This is a serious problem and closes the beaches many times a year, even though I do swim at these beaches it makes me sceptical sometimes...Ive never got sick because I pay attention to the warnings and use common sense. There is an online checker from Auckland Council to check the water quality at all swimming spots across the region updated daily.
gde1989 most of them however if the system can’t handle high demand I think they still do it under rare circumstances but hey I could be wrong!! Let me know!!
