You can watch the behind the scenes of Tom's plane stunt. He also was riding the motorcycle, driving the car, and learned to hold his breath underwater for 6 minutes to do the water stunt

53:01 yes the incomparable Rebecca Ferguson. She really took Mission Impossible to the next level. Ilsa Faust is one of the best female characters in recent memory.

Yes, he held on to the plane and the plane really took off. He also famously held his breath underwater for 6 minutes for the underwater scene. They release behind the scenes features and trailers for Tom Cruise’s movies you should check out. There is a BTS feature for the latest mission impossible where he rides a motorcycle off of a huge cliff for real.

@pduidesign - yes he did, there is a very interesting youtube video of how they have made that movie. Yeah, this was Tom Cruise, stuck next to a plane, with a specific eye lenses, to protect his eyes from the stong wind. And what you see there, it is actually Tom Cruise, doing his own stunt(s). Also, it is not 6 minutes, but a bit more than this, but Tom is actually able to do it. It is the same with a flying the small plane(s), or helicopters. Also recommend to watch the behind the scenes for other Mission Impossible movies, including the latest ones (especially the one with Henry Cavill - when Tom was flying a helicopter solo, and and the same time was doing his own acting). It shows what Tom Cruise can actually do - and much respect for him in this case.

Tom Cruise had to wear special contact lenses that covered the entirety of his eyeballs so he could keep them open when the plane took off. He did the stunt five times before he and the director were satisfied.

Sometimes when Cruise does these crazy high altitude stunts, he has some kind of safety wire attached to him that is digitally erased during postproduction. As the case with this plane stunt. Think of how easy would be to lose your grip while hanging on to the door without of any kind of safety feature.

Late comment. M-I:5 was topsy-turvy to me. Saw this one in IMAX as well. The director was Oscar-winning writer of The Usual Suspects (1994), Christopher McQuarrie. He worked on 2 earlier films with Cruise as writer/director of Jack Reacher (2012) and writer on Edge of Tomorrow (2014); both enjoyable. This newer team with Renner coming back as Brandt, introducing Rebacca Ferguson as Illsa and Alec Baldwin as the CIA boss was pretty good. Meeting the match of a lifetime with The Syndicate. Sean Harris as the leader, Solomon Lane was geniusly sinister. I was listening to Hunt's message at the end of M:I-4 and knew these were the next bad guys. Couldn't wait to see them go mano a mano. Cruise once again, the consumate performer as he is. The stunts (Air, Underwater, on the road) are quite amazing. Mr. McQuarrie becoming the main franchise director from here on out made more awesomeness.
