She is very nearly Hunt's equal. She isn't in the least phased by completely insane plans. She holds her own against anyone, including Hunt. She has that calm demeanor no matter what is going on. I mean, there's a reason MI6 chose her to infiltrate The Syndicate. The brass it takes to chew out Lane to his face throw him a gun and tell him to man up and kill you himself or stop threatening you... that's completely Hunt territory.

Fun fact: Atlee's appearance in the scene on London's Embankment (in the light brown coat and glasses) appears to be a nod to George Smiley, an superspy character created by the iconic spy thriller writer John Le Carre. Le Carre has written some of the best spy thrillers around - "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy", "The Constant Gardner", "The Tailor of Panama" and the TV series "The Night Manager" are all excellent.

The first of multiple films in the franchise to be helmed by one director. That director is Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar-winner for Best Original Screenplay (The Usual Suspects). M-I:5 is McQuarrie's 3rd film with Cruise followed by Jack Reacher (2012) & Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa, actually co-starred with Dwayne Johnson in HERCULES (2014) before M-I:5. Sean Harris as Solomon Lane, was in Prometheus (2012) and Deliver Us From Evil (2014). Altogether this was another incredible mission. Saw this one in IMAX and of course, it's the only way you watch it. McQuarrie is director of the next installments. M-I:6 Fallout is the peak and you can't blink while watching that one.

It's funny hearing you talk about the gadgets and how probable they'd be in real life. Back in the 1960's whenever a new gadget was featured on the show "Get Smart" the US Intelligence agency at the time would visit the show's writers and producers and ask "Where did you hear about this?" worried that they somehow had access to knowledge they shouldn't have. It would not surprise me if after each episode the people in charge would visit their tech division and say "So that thing that was on the show last night... can you guys actually make that?"😁

Fun stuff that others may or may not have mentioned... Christopher McQuarrie, who (unintentionally) took over the series with this film, was a fan of continuity. After ghostwriting Luthor and Ethan's wife INTO the last movie, he littered several items into this film that were references and homages to the previous entries in the series. Ghost Protocol being the most obvious, as the sub-plot with Alec Baldwin and Jeremy Renner being a direct follow up to the events in that film; however, other examples include a bloody Ethan Hunt calling IMF from a phone booth and featuring the exact same dialogue and code (bravo, echo, one, one) as he uses in the first film, the motorcycle chase being an allusion to the end sequence of the second film, and Ethan dying and needing to be resuscitated from the third film. Originally, McQuarrie had reached out to both Maggie Q and Paula Patton to see if they would be interested in returning for this film, but both already had previous engagements, so a new female lead was created in their place with Rebecca Ferguson taking the main lead. Sean Harris was asked several times to play the villain and turned it down because he was not interested in playing franchise roles that would require him to come back for films he might not want to be in. McQuarrie assured him that all the main villains always get killed, so it was a one-and-done process and he wouldn't need to return. Then he had a change or heart down the line and re-wrote the character to be captured, but not killed. Oops. Sean Harris then returned for the next film and was ALSO not killed again. Strike two! Also, Jens Hultén, who plays the "Bone Doctor" who tortures Ethan after he is captured was supposed to get kicked, hit his head on a metal pipe and get killed in that scene. McQuarrie added in a few lines of dialogue and liked his performance so much that he rewrote the character and gave him an expanded role in the film. The scene where Atlee gets tranquilized in the Prime Minister's room required reshoots, but it was impossible to schedule Alec Baldwin and Tom Cruise together due to their schedules. So a few of the closeup shots you see were filmed weeks apart on difference sets in different parts of the world... including the one where Cruise is kneeling down and both Jenner and Baldwin are leaning next to him. The shot of Alec Baldwin was not filmed with the other two and digitally added into the frame much later. The shot where Ilsa lifts her leg up and points the sniper rifle was almost never in the film. Once McQuarrie saw her in the dress and realized the slit allowed for much of her legs to be exposed and how flexible it would allow her to put her leg up and point the gun, he wanted to add it in. Production wanted to wrap up and move onto other scenes. So Tom Cruise vouched for him and basically told them "YOU NEED THIS SHOT! THERE IS NO MOVIE WITHOUT THIS SHOT!" so he could get it. (ok... I'm paraphrasing a little). Also, the scene where Cruise is on the walkway battling the much larger sniper with the flute rifle, McQuarrie used two different lenses to film the reverse shots... one to make the sniper appear much larger in frame and for Tom to look much smaller in frame, to give the impression that he was being vastly overpowered. McQuarrie also wanted to punch up the dialogue in the scene were Ethan and Benji were discussing the assassination at the opera. He was trying to come up with some deep meaning that would tie everything in the film together for why the Syndicate was doing what they were doing and Cruise suggested "to send them a message." That was the entire reason for everything that went down. McQuarrie's reaction was "That's it? Is it really that simple?" and sure enough, when Ethan explains to Benji why, he simply says "tonight was a statement" and that's it! (At this point, I should also mention that the movie went on to get a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score). BTW... the "effects" shot at 25:41 of Benji putting on the mask while looking into the mirror was completely practical. The actor putting the mask on Benji was a double for Tom Cruise and the mirror was actually just a hole into the next room with the actual actor Benji would have been playing, Cruise, and a double for Ferguson. Completely unrelated to this film, and, yet, still fascinating... just before being cast in this film, Rebecca Ferguson starred in the miniseries "The White Queen" for BBC One (it later aired on Starz in the US). The main writer and developer of that miniseries was Emma Frost. Emma Frost is also the name of the fictional X-Men character The White Queen, who debuted in X-Men Issue 129... 34 years prior to that series' first airing.

Man, I first found out about Rebecca Ferguson in this movie, and after this, I just saw her everywhere. I LOVED her acting!! I was just so mesmerized by her in this movie! She had been in some TV series before, but I think after this, her career skyrocketed? She was in the Greatest Showman, and then Doctor Sleep (please watch this if you haven't!! She's amazing there too!), and then Dune etc. I just absolutely love the character Ilsa Faust. This is how you do a female character. She's a full-fledged character of her own, not just a love interest. I think I read somewhere that they (Cruise and McQuarrie) developed Ilsa's character without any plan of making her Hunt's love interest, but then you can see here that us all of the audience really felt their chemistry, and it works that way. It's subtle, but Idk, it just works lol. I love it. It's really not like other movies. I hope she doesn't die in MI7 or MI8 :'( Honestly, Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise are just the absolute perfect duo in creating awesome movies. They did it again in Top Gun Maverick and Edge of Tomorrow which are non-MI movies. OMG PLEASE CAN YOU DO A REACTION FOR EDGE OF TOMORROW?!?! That movie surprised me on how great it was!!!

Everyone would choose Fallout but the whole nuclear bomb threat plot has become tired and stale. The introduction of Ilsa Faust and Solomon Lane was just brilliant. I loved the underwater cooling tank scene. I loved the opera scene. I loved the motorcycle chase scene. I loved the opening scene, especially when Ethan gives that looks, pulls the cord and flies out of the plane. I loved how they took down Atley and Solomon Lane

About Rebecca Ferguson, didn't you guys watch Doctor Sleep? The whole opera bit is a masterpiece and one of those things that make Rogue Nation the best M:I ever made.

there weapons you see in this, or any of the other Mission Impossible movies, are made to be real weapons. So the flute gun we saw Tall Blonde putting together and the "pipe/pole gun' of Rebecca Ferguson are real guns made from/in the design of what they were hidden as.

I think I enjoyed this the most out of the post-3 sequels, Ilsa was great and Lane was a really good villain too like an evil Benji. I liked the way they trapped him too, and the music when during the scene too was top notch not to say that Fallout isn't great either, but I think I enjoy this a bit more, the yellow dress may have some part in the bias though...

She tells the story that the jump from the Opera House roof was her first day shooting, and she has a fear of heights. So there she is, first day on set, strapped to Tom Cruise, jumping off a building, screaming absolutely the filthiest words she could think of in his ear for multiple takes and then apologizing to him.

Until the lost, higher quality sound be found lol. Is there any way you can lower the volume from your mic's? The feedback of your voices bouncing back from iside the room is super loud. I'm no audio expert so I understand if it can't be done until the main issue is fixed which I'm sure you'll take care of soon hopefully, especially before Mission Impossible: Fallout 😁👍🏼

Fallout just ups this even more. McQ as director... he was MADE for these films the way Tom Cruise was. Do Bourne first, but do follow that with Bond. Bourne is a solid trilogy. Damon does really good work in it. Bond... are you talking the whole thing? Or just Daniel Craig bond? Either way I'm in, the old ones are a hell of a lot of fun. Great actors in the role. Lots of fun film stuff in them. New Bond is on another level and is less about the corny cringey womanizing and gadgets.

Definately need to tackle 007. Start with Sean Connery in Dr. No and work your way through the decades, different styles, different approaches to playing James Bond.
