I had the privilege to work with Tom on MI2. What we saw as crew was a man who had this incredible knack to learn something very fast. There is a scene in that film where a gun is kicked up out of the sand in a fight scene. This little trick was done with a hidden pneumatic ram that jumps the gun up when Tom kicks it. But the real trick was Tom had to catch the gun, swing around fact and fire it at his assailant. Tom was able to learn this move very quickly and in no way was it easy. But this is Tom Cruise and he enjoys any style of challenge. He's unlike anyone else I have worked with. His self confidence is off the scale. The director of MI2 was John Woo, he was quiet and let Tom be Tom. And maybe this is why this franchise gets better at every film.
That's amazing!! I just watched MI:2 for the first time since I was in Highschool, which has been about 20 years, and I think it is incredibly underrated! I love that movie, and enjoy it more than MI:3, to be honest. Do you have any more stories to share about your work on the film?
@@Dartanyoogles ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-irLLyMNgwHc.html thats a link to the pop up gun scene, and another very curious aspect to the whole fight scene was Dougray Scott had a injury that had him replaced with a stunt double and elements of this fight were shot at a later date in the US. Same with segments of the Biosite set. MI2 was shot in Oz. The pop up gun that was covered in sand was smeared with black plasticine so the mechanism wouldn't jam with sand.
Wow, pinning this! So cool. I watched 2 for the first time after hearing so many people call it bad. Sure it’s not the best one, but it’s still a John Woo film! It is arguably the most tonally unique entry and that third act is transcendent. I would pay good money to see Cruise and Woo collaborate again.
@@SydneyVolpe Think back to the era of the 2000's, The Matrix film really shook things up and aspects of this are shadowed in films from this era. There's a big gap between MI2 & MI3 and I believe 9/11 had a big impact on this. That event really had film studios being very careful what they released, especially if it had any elements of the US Vs the bad guys. The film The Quiet American was a film that had a very delayed release because of these factors. In Matrix 3 the crash scene in the Machine City where Trinity dies was nearly removed because it looked very similar to 9/11. Matrix 2/3 were produced during 9/11 times and were shot back to back. Big films with big names involved are very complicated affairs. Sometimes I'm amazed how it all comes together as a finished product that looks so polished.
Can’t wait to hear everyone’s thoughts! Sorry in advance if any pics are blurry or editing errors - was down to the wire getting this out before seeing Talk to Me - in 2 minutes!! hope you guys are well❤
@@upfulsoul826this is something i totally forgot to mention- compared to the other ‘part ones’ we’ve gotten, it ends in a really satisfying way. Excited for the rest of the story but this one felt pretty complete.
My grandma is so excited for this. She bought my entire family tickets in imax. Every year there is a Tom Cruise movie she makes it an event for the family.
I had the privilege of seeing this back in April with Lorne Balfe and producers in the same theater, and even tho he didn't make his presence known, I spotted Tom Cruise himself at the screening... Unforgettable experience and man oh man was this outstanding
@@SydneyVolpe hahaha a collaboration with a theater... Tom Cruise was doing test screenings and they invited me to attend, rate and review, but I was under contract to not speak a word til July 😭
@@Brandon_4272 Yes for real! I'm so jealous you got to see a test screening with tom! were there any changes from the test screening to the released movie?
I agree that story stuff was stronger here even if the big moments didn't go as hard. I loved the multiple spinning plates of all these different parties all weaving in and out of each other. And I had that exact same feeling about the cliff jump! The sound design is perfectly jarring.
The entity was pretty dang sweet! But even though this movie was almost 3 hours long, the pacing did feel very quick compared to the other ones. It also did have a sort of..."monotone" feel throughout it. Definitely a step down from Fallout for me personally, but still a good movie! Although, Rogue Nation still takes the cake for me. Loved all of the twists and turns in that story. The character of Ilsa was awesome in that movie! And can't forget the plane sequence!
You are quickly becoming my favorite movie reviewer! You are so beautiful, intelligent, and give a fantastic analysis into each movie you review; plus I usually have a similar opinion as you as well! Tom said he wanted to still be doing Mission Impossible movies when he was 80, and I am all for it!
Seeing it tomorrow and I’m pumped to see it! I love the Mission Impossible franchise ever since 4. This one looks like no exception at keeping the franchise consistent and exhilarating. And of course Tom Cruise excelling at being a magnetic movie star. Can’t wait to see it tomorrow and hopefully it’s one of the best ones. Great review as always, Sydney!
M:I-7 is the new best MI to date. McQ brings more tension, more humor and more thrills and more characters and does a wonderful job of balancing it all for the most entertaining installment in the franchise thus far. Definitely NEEDS to be seen on the big screen.
Yeah this is definitely another big win for this franchise. I’m still sorting out my ranking of the franchise in my head, but Dead Reckoning is gonna be toward the top for sure. It's not the best in the series for me, but it gave me a ton of what I wanted to see. Nice review, Syd!
Fallout is still the king in terms of MI films (and I think Rogue Nation, the first one, and even Ghost Protocol are stronger compared to this one), but I still think this film is still a banger despite my issues with it (particularly with how they handled a certain character in it, but won't say for spoilers reasons for those who haven't seen it). It's just like Tom Cruise said, "it's good to be back at the movies"
And the fact about mission impossible franchise is that there is no consensus of the best movie on the series. Some even had mi2 has fav😅 mine is dead reckoning now btw❤also esai morales will be more refined in part 2
First time I watched an MI movie in theaters/IMAX and it blew me away! What I love the most about these movies is how they always find a way to make each entry unique, even now under a single vision from McQ/Tom. It's so obvious how passionate they are about the franchise and how they're not satisfied treading the same steps, which is a lesson Hollywood at large really needs to learn ASAP. Of course this approach has its drawbacks as well and you articulated them perfectly but damn, I'll take a slightly flawed tour-de-force in action and very classic storytelling over just about anything these major studios are pumping out lately. Rogue Nation remains my favorite but this one has to be up there for me just based on the ambition it shows. I don't think any other MI movie felt this big, with the stakes so high, and had the emotionally charged moments feel so true. It really understands many of the anxieties we're feeling about the world today and somehow packages it very neatly without ever getting too silly or too self-serious, or too scattered and superficial. Every movie in the franchise feels like a balancing act in that sense and this one definitely took that up a notch. Can't wait to see how they even attempt to top it in part two!
Great point about this franchise being one of the most interesting in modern cinema with how it has evolved over the years. They experiment with new ways of doing stunts and action scenes. I've seen so many car chases I prefer movies not to have them anymore. So they put their own twist on it and the way they shot it made me feel like I was going to hit the wall. My big hope is that Ilsa returns and the bodyguard character switches sides.
This movie was a blast! Funny thing is that i also was comparing this to the masterpiece that John Wick 4 is. JWchapter4 is still and always be my nr. 1 fav movie of 2023. But this one is top 5 material for sure.💪🏻 i especially thought that the chemistry between Grace and Ethan was great. What a fun sequence that was with the yellow Fiat… that’s how you do a fun thrilling chase! ( looking at you Dial of Destiny) i also liked the Lorne Balfe score a lot.
Fallout is still top for me, but DR not far behind. Such a thrilling film and feels very different from previous films. Absolutely in love with Balfe’s score for this film.
The first 15min did make me a little nervous lol but yeah reliable and well-oiled and such a beautiful franchise with evolution. I miss having different directors for each, but McQ changing his teams out for each one def shows, they feel different. Love this new cast so much too. And even though AI was eye rolling macguffin at first, altering history vs shooting a nuke was a good direction to go with it. The clicking sound is good creepy lol. I'm glad there's more they dig into Ethan's character on top of the new action. You bring up a good point, the train scene is close tone to the first, and maybe if the third act of the first one was made with today's special and practical effects, maybe I would've liked it much more. Liked the de Palma flairs lol the dutch angles, Pom OMG so sad the ending
This is the first review of Dead Reckoning Part 1 that I have 100% agreed with. There are some others that I mostly agree with but then they'll have an issue with something I thought was great or something like that, but like word for word absolutely agree. Thank you also for highlighting the nightclub scene and the entity using someone's voice, one of the most horrifying moments in the franchise :)
It's wild how they wrote this and filmed part of it over 3 years ago and it happened to be released as AI art, writing, and Chat GPT are at the pinnacle of the cultural zeitgeist.
Great Review I Haven't Seen This Movie But Im Super Excited To See This Movie Its My Most Anticipated Movie Of The Year The Last Three Movies Have Been Amazing And Hopefully This One Will Be Great I Got A Big Question What Movie Do You Think Will Dominate July For Me I Think This Movie Will Easily Dominate
Do you think Dead Reckoning shooting on digital instead of 35mm like Fallout or the lack of scenes shot in IMAX were part of it not looking as great as the other films?
@@SydneyVolpesaw this yesterday in IMAX and thought it was very good. not my favorite of the series but still very good. seeing it again in dolby this weekend so my 3.5/5 rating might change.
Gonna come back to this review after I watch the movie tomorrow cause I don't want to know a single thing about it or watch any footage from the trailer beforehand. But I am very excited.
@@SydneyVolpeBack from the cinema. Wild experience just as expected. I rewatched the previous two just before heading over and Rogue Nation might still be the best simply bc of Rebecca Ferguson (who was criminally underused here and then later SPOILERS - killed by that prick ugh disappointing af). Can't wait for Part Two though. Loved your review.
I think I’d be a quite awful solo discord moderator haha but we actually have one for my podcast patreon! www.patreon.com/HouseofCinema? I would like to do live streams or just more diverse content in the near future. Appreciate you guys
Loved this movie. Saw it in IMAX and it may be my favorite in the series. I’m getting ready to watch Fallout and Rogue Nation today & tomorrow, or both today 🤔 in my killer 5.2.4 Dolby Atmos home theater (75” Sony 4K TV).
Mmm, John Wick 4 vs MI7, yeah that's one I've considered. I think for me the fact that MI7 is a two-parter - while it does not end on an annoying cliffhanger (aka there is a satisfying amount of the plot resolved) - means I'd give the edge to JW4 as a more "complete package." That being said, the train portion (piano...) was incredible! Also Cruise's/McQuarrie's Rome sequence is so much better than Fast X (I mean everything in MI7 was better than that stinker)! I will add that MI7 perhaps had less down time than JW4. Speaking of the sound design of the cliff jump, I got hella jump scared when the audio kicked back in lol. Also I like Shea Whigham in everything I see him in and his partner was cool and I really liked the delivery of his thoughts on power during the train sequence. OK spoilers reflection: It sucks that Ilsa died! It almost seems like Rebecca Ferguson had said that she didn't want to continue on or w/e the issue was so they wrote the script in such a way to introduce Grace as a "replacement." Hayley Atwell did great in the movie though, I liked her arc and her hesitation/ultimate choice felt well done rather than overly sudden or jarring. Ethan def cares about these people though, his friends, as in despite knowing Ilsa longer he tried his best to save everyone. One dislike I have is that Benji and Luther seem to be side-showed off more in this installment. Like, they've got comms for sure, but I wish Benji got more to do. He still hasn't gotten a fight scene where he wins on his own yet! I was hoping in Fallout it would happen but they've been keeping the "plucky, comic relief" though still undeniably important in a bevy of other ways.
Saw the movie yesterday, and it's personally my second favorite in the series. Watch your video days before and then now, and I automatically agreed with everything!😄 Well, not everything. I thought this was a handsomely shot movie, and I think the middle stretch is the weakest part of the movie while still being effective on its own.
Would love to see Tom Cruise reunite with Michael Mann to make the final Mission Impossible. McQuarrie is good but his films are starting to feel like David Yates’ Harry Potter movies. Tough to tell apart. Luckily Tom’s hair changes every movie
@SydneyVolpe yeah; waiting until I can get to the imax on Friday. Releasing on a Tuesday feels strange to me, but I'm super excited to see Tom cruise defy nature again
I'm sorry they left Paula Patton behind. She was really good. I thought this movie was....fine, from a stunt standpoint....but it''s a pretty basic movie, with a ridiculous MacGuffin, and an entire faction designed just to break up resolution of any action sequence. And a big moment is an accident. Hayley Atwell has never been better, and she's a competent character who has a major action flaw which was great and refreshing There's lots to love, but this franschise has had better entries.
I’m honestly surprised people are so into this. I adore this franchise and the last couple movies especially but this one felt extremely underwhelming given the high bar they set And (spoilers) … … … Ilsa deserved better 😢
John Wick had good action but the story wasn't very compelling on an emotional level. I liked the violence but the entire scene at the poker table was terrible.
