Mission impossible is basically what the Fast and Furious franchise wishes they can be. Mission Impossible is proof that people don’t mind long franchises, as long as the story is good, and the action is not overly obnoxious.
Well, Fast and furious also is a proof that people don’t mind long franchises, even if the action is overly obnoxious. Remember, the 7th movie in Fast franchise (the same number as Dead reckoning) made the most money in the franchise.
@@michaelneilvalencia2205 Just because people watch Fast and Furious than Mission Impossible doesn't mean the franchise is good overall 🤷 And has more charm and heart? For 10 movies, Toretto literally has no development or a proper character arc, who gives a shit about him? 😂😂
The funny part is is I kind of hated this franchise in the early entries. Mission Impossible 1 thought it was too smart for it's own good and was an incoherent mess of a film. Mission Impossible 2 was the most ridiculous nearly self-parody of a John Woo movie. Things really changed with Mission Impossible 3, I think. That's the real start of the movies as we think of them now.
@@BlazingOwnagerhonestly I agree. 2 is a really mid action movie in general, and besides the opening of MI1 and Tom doing Tom things, I don't think the first movie was all that. But 3 were fucking crazy dude, it was the first I got to see in the theatre. Kinda didn't expect a lot and since it, only rogue nation has been the only one I felt wasn't a better sequel. I think Fallout will be genuinely hard to one up, it was just that good, but I don't see this one or the next not keeping with the trend tbh
Somebody needs to bring Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves to the hospital. Their back must've hurt for carrying the action genre right now. True legends right there 🙌
He's approaching 70, he probably should. In fact... he'll be 70 by the time the next movie is released.... I mean he looks OLD now, imagine how bad he's gonna be in five years.
@@lordnicenstein5105 Dear God, Tom's fan boys are desperate to protect his aging picket line crossing @$$. The Kenu comment was actually meant as a joke, kind of like Tom Cruises acting over the last few years. Lets face it, when Tom started off acting he was utter trash. He just played the young cocky guy. But he evolved. He turned the vapid persona into something new. He gained acting chops, and gave us masterpeices of cinema and the craft. He evolved past that role, and became a mirad of characters that we loved him for... back when he could act. Its clear those days have passed. Tom's ego has gotten too big. He's wiffed out disaster after disaster when it comes to acting. So rather then take a risk, he's all just stunts and explosions now. Robert Redford, Dustin Hoffman, and Jack Nicholson embraced their roles and their characters and made masterpeices into their declining years. Tom, is just shilling out junk. He's shooting stunts before their is even a script. He's planning explosions, before they've hired a director. He's doing poromotionals before they even have caste. Tom Cruise is literally everything that is wrong with Hollywood. Ego centeric, vapid, soulless, plotless and flashy. As I said before, Tom Cruise was an incredibly preformer who gave up acting 20 years ago, too bad he didn't stop making movies.
The thing about Cruise and Reeves isn’t that they are ageless wonders, although they are, but if you watch the Behind the Scenes, they are both so damn enthusiastic and dedicated to their craft. They WANT to entertain you. They LOVE what they do. And those kinda vibes bleeds out of the screen and into the audiences. And it makes it even more enjoyable.
I've seen various interviews with Cruise where he talks about how, early in his career, he always made sure to learn from the legends he was working with, like Paul Newman. Quite a difference from some of the newer actors you see today, who get one role in something big or semi big and then act like they're already at the top of their game and above criticism. (That attitude seems endemic among actors in crappy streaming shows, for some reason, lol).
Entertainment? I've gotten so used to being preached at and lectured to by movies the last 15 years i kind of forgot they were supposed to ENTERTAIN me! It's quite refreshing...well done Tom and crew!
Mission Impossible 2 is the only one that I didn't really like. Felt like it was a Goldeneye parody than it is an MI movie. Thankfully, MI3 put the franchise back on track and Ghost Protocol took it to the next level
@@Fl0k5serI liked Mi2 but I was young when I watched it and I understand I’m in the minority. It’s more of a cheesy guilty pleasure. But yes I agree they progressively got better.
What I love about the MI franchise is that Ethan Hunt's nuts are not cut off to empower the female characters. He's still the same character like how he was in the original first one and is supported by strong female characters who are just as badass as him like Rebecca Ferguson as well as Hayley Atwell and Pom Klementieff in this new one. It has both strong male and female characters, one gender doesn't look weaker to empower the other. This is exactly how it should be done.
That is the trend with Tom Cruise movies overall. Another example is Edge of Tomorrow though with this movie it is critical that his character has growth for the storyline.
Pom Klementieff's character is just an assassin hunting for Ethan. That's it and it works without any "strong female character" bullshit stuff. God I love this franchise
@user-dj8nc9ov4x Apart of Hollywood makes those movies for the feminist activist audience and goes against the grain to cater to them. The reality is the average movie goer doesn't care about that.
But Pom beats the shit out of Cruise and she's a skinny little woman. Also there's a joke that is clearly an erectile dysfunction joke at the expense of Cruise
I did think this did a better job at having a stopping point. They didn’t pause in the middle of the climax. Technically, the mission was accomplished. They just now have a new mission.
I personally found Tom cruise in this movie very low key tbh such a smooth humble performance 👌 he's there with a bang when you need him in the movie but that bang is so silent and powerful at the same time!! No flashy dialogs or over the top acting in any way which ultimately gives other actors and there are so many of them and its true and everyone shines in the movie equallyand that's a total win win + The direction of the movie is soo retro! What a classic vibes full on best action movie from start to finish❤ Can't wait for next one 🙌
Fun Fact: Tom Cruise not only made his own stunts in this movie, but he also programmed a real sentient Evil AI for the flick, and he actually beat it in real life too. This movie is not a movie, but a documentary about how Tom Cruise really saved us all from technological apocalypse.
@@lordrevilo7935 Jeremy's only gripe was with the villain who he felt wasn't fleshed out in this movie... I think a lot of people praise 4 and 6 a lot while 5 gets a little less praise than those 2.. it seems like this one is closer to 5 which is an excellently made movie with solid stunt work and action with a good story.
@@lordrevilo7935 Fallout is definitely a better movie but compare to most action movies that's coming out lately, Dead Reckoning is certainly one of the better ones and a successful crowd pleaser for action fans
@@SK008 i feel like part two will make this one even better. It will make more sense with the villains plot and the overall tie in as to what this specific part of the story leads to.
You really have to give credit to how insane Tom Cruise gets when doing crazy stunts like the cliff jump. That alone may get me to catch up on the rest of the films and see this one in theaters. Mission Impossible never disappoints at all. Tom Cruise keeps getting better and better.
@@5Ci0N You do know him yelling at his crew was because his crew didn't wear masks during production right?? They almost shut down the production. He yells because he cares about everyone's safety while filming 🤷
You really have to give credit to how insane Tom Cruise gets when speaking about scientology. That alone may get me to never watch any of his films ever again. He just keeps getting crazier and crazier.
IMAX was made for Vanessa Kirby close-ups!! ❤😍🙌 This one was a non-stop adrenaline fueling romp from start to finish! Take note 'Fast X', this is how you do an amazing chase sequence through the streets of Rome. The slow buildup towards that one particular set piece was amazing, and when it finally happens, it was absolutely great to be among a crowd that totally went wild! That's exactly the kind of audience participation that scene needed. It's safe to say that Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have successfully elevated Ethan Hunt to the coolest secret agent out there, and 'Mission: Impossible' into an iconic franchise. ❤🔥🙌
Keanu is incredibly good for his age.. but then again - you see some of the stuntmen in the movies sometimes having to Slow down for him and wait for their mark. Still good tho.
Another great reviewer named Grace Randolph brought up a very good point about this franchise. She said that the Jason Bourne movies were focused on melee combat, John Wick movies are based on gun play, and Mission impossible movies were based off of intelligence and quick thinking in dangerous scenarios. Or something like that. It was an interesting thought.
Interesting... I feel like as a spy movie, MI7 should've equally had all that stuff you mentioned. Being as those are literally all the skills of a stereotypical spy/ secret agent. However this 1 definitely lacked in the combat and gunplay department compared to the last 2, if you ask me.
My favorite always will be M:I 3. It has the best villain of all movies and it was the first movie to really set the Mission Impossible formula. On top of that the cast is amazing, with one of the best teams Ethan Hunt ever had
The Mission Impossible Franchise is the only one I can think of where I'm still just as excited as I was in my teens to see a new film when it comes out. It's frankly amazing how the quality of these films keep getting better.
@@Bryce3189definitely... Like the teaser trailer they released a year in advance for this movie (which spoiled the best scenes of the movie) was better than the actual movie!
I've loved Hayley Atwell since I saw her role as Agent Carter (I really liked that series and wish that it wasn't cancelled as it had such a lovely vibe and felt nicely grounded to me).
I'm so used to seeing Hayley Atwell in period clothes that now when I see her in something contemporary, it just feels wrong. Have the same problem with actors from Downton Abbey... :-)
As a whole, I do think I enjoyed Fallout a bit more, especially the story. My biggest issue with this one was also the villain who I just could not understand or connect to at all. It's true that he might be fleshed out in Part 2, but this is still it's own movie and I'm going to judge it as such. Also Fallout had Henry Cavill, which immediately bumps it up a few points. But I did really love the action sequences in this and I was also crushing hard on Grace the whole movie, so still a lot of fun and a great follow-up!
I agree, but I see the challenge they had creating him. SPOILER: He isn't really the villain; he isn't the one making the choices. He is just who was chosen by the entity to do its will. Likely due to Ethan's past with him. Ethan isn't battling this guy, he is battling the entity. I think as we understand the entity more, this villain will get more fleshed out.
I will say that I have tickets for this weekend so am definitely looking forward to it. Tom always delivers and unlike Hollywood at large Tom understands Movies and audiences in the classic sense. I have enjoyed every single entry except Part 2 which was an absolute mess. That being said it has been progressively better each time. I have to give a special shout out to Philip Seymour Hoffman in Mi3 for the hands down best and nastiest villain in all of the series to date.
@@SK008Mission Impossible has more meat on its bones than John Wick. John Wick has more CGI and while super entertaining, doesn't shake things up like MI does
Honestly the Mission Impossible franchise has always been one I scoff at subconsciously, but then every time I actually watch the movie I'm extremely impressed and entertained. So, I'm looking forward to this one! When it releases on digital...
MI 7 has serious pacing issues --- the first 30 minutes were tedious and boring. Villain Esai Morales, who is a magnificent actor, doesn't have any memorable lines, which is a shame. The plot had too many threads, similar to a restaurant with 150 items on the menu. The movie would have been MUCH better if an hour was edited out. The Tom Cruise movie "Oblivion" is 100 times better.
I was surprised to enjoy so much situational humour in the film. It's kinda sad how modern comedies don't make me genuinely laugh with the movie as much as this one. Great action. Interesting story. And super creepy premise.
one of the rare few franchises left in hollywood that keeps getting better and better, and it's so surreal that these movies managed to live up to the branding of the "impossible" title
All the actors were on point! Even the villains. Now the relationship between the antagonist and the 2nd antagonist is perfect. They are one and the same. The one depends on the other to be it's hands in reality and the latter believes in what the other is and wishes to protect it. The movie does great portraying this in various scenes.
It’s pretty incredible how these movies have been getting progressively better since MI3. I did enjoy MI3. Abrams gave us a much needed upgrade to the franchise. It just got better after that.
@@cable7152 Hoffman’s character with his acting would have been the perfect villain for this installment. He was already cold blooded and ruthless, just imagine him being backed by an all powerful AI. It’s a real bummer he’s no longer with us (RIP)
definitely a good time, time flew by. Also, I don't mind the multi part movies if it allows the story to be told better but i am not a fan of exactly what you said about the villain being someone we've never heard in 20+ years but apparently is so crucial to our hero
This is the first action movie where the behind the scenes are more publicised then the trailer. Just proves they recognise the hype is around Tom Cruise’s stunts. I got an MI ad before this review 😂
I don't get what you guys care about. Yeah, he jumped off the cliff and yeah it was cool, I guess? Ive seen hundreds of films, why is this special? Were minds fucking blown from a guy parachuting off a ciff? Really? WHo gives afuck?
I saw it this morning and I loved it. I loved that the main villain is A.I. which is very relevant on todays world and surprisingly it was very scary. Like I was genuinely afraid of it. There’s a moment when it’s using Benji’s voice to make Ethan run in circles then stops and speaks by itself and taunts Ethan, very cool. I loved that most if not all of the characters weren’t one dimensional and were smart and didn’t act like generic secondary characters. I loved Haley Atwell and Pom Klementieff in this, they both did such an amazing job, although I think Grace was my favourite character in this, still I praise both. The only nitpicks I have is killing of Isla and Pom’s character way too early like I get the emotional impact and threat of this villain but I don’t think they should’ve died, like not to sound morbid here but it would’ve been better if someone like Kittridge was killed off instead. Also there’s a moment before the big jump where Ethan is remembering all the women in his life who he’s in someway failed or endangered and there’s no mention of Lindsey Farris or Julia. Like idk it’s a small thing but continuity is important and it would’ve been more emotional to include them and a way to remember the previous films. Overall this was an amazing set up to what will be a very climatic and phenomenal send off to Ethan Hunt. I give this 8.5/10
MI Dead Reckoning is the first film that I ever feel on the edge of my seat. The suspense, the desperation the threat of the villain it makes me feel unease, I really love it. Can't wait for part 2.
You are one of the few reliable and trustworthy reviewers on the internet. I don't always agree with you, but I trust your integrity unlike some, sooooooooooo, thanks!
Always count on Tom Cruise to deliver an exhilarating movie. Raising the bar higher in each Mission Impossible installment, with his breathtaking death-defying stunts. Taking audiences on a thrilling roller coaster of action and suspense. Fallout cemented itself as the best in the franchise consistently more engrossing, also it’s got a darker subtext
@lisasurlie834 We're talking in terms of longevity though, Cruise is a prestigious film icon with an extraordinary track record. Namely his consistency for Mission Impossible for nearly 30 years. Rarely do you see any actor maintain this level of stardom
Saw it yesterday and couldn't connect with it. Found the story poor and shallow. It's just everybody is chasing a key for reasons they don't really know. the action was cartoonish and almost like the recent fast and furious movies. There was a lot of CGI involved. It's an ok movie but nowhere near the last 3 ones in quality.
@@SolCresta3405 That's crazy if u just look at the villain of the movie which is personally the best villain of the franchise that alone puts it above the second
Excellent, excellent action-movie. I love how well they keep you rooting for the good guys here. I love the part when Benji was asked what’s important to him and he answered: “my friends”. I love the part when they pick up Ethan after the yellow Fiat scene and you can see the bond between the group. I love how Grace portrayed her character and growth and what an amazing mentor and man Ethan is and how much he steps it up to keep his promises. I love how you can feel Ethan’s true disdain and dread of the AI. And he’s constantly wrestling whether he can continue to act in the face of what seems to be inevitability. I love the talk between Ethan and Luther. So much incredible stuff tucked in here. A true standout for this year! 👏
@Cenot4ph Yes, the plot is more obvious, but it compliments the 2 things we are here for... which is the great action set pieces + seeing the good guys get ahead.
I think the only major gripe being a part 1 is how the two cop characters hogged screen time (and was not entertaining) just to hammer home how they don't know whether or not they should blindly follow their superiors or do what seems to be right
Watched it yesterday in IMAX , the movie theater was FULL, I mean the tickets were over in a couple of days! This is the first movie of the year in which I actually enjoyed every single bit.
Between Mission Impossible 7 and Extraction 2, we've got a full live-action translation of the Uncharted 2 train sequence. You'll understand when you watch :)
1. Fallout 2. Rogue Nation 3. Ghost Protocol 4. Death Reckoning Part 1 5. Mission: Impossible 6. M:I 2 7. M:I 3 The first one you can never get me to say otherwise that is the best one. 2-4 can change. 5-7 are like the are.
The fact that people are still excited for a Mission Impossible movie nearly 30 years later just proves that as long as you have talented storytellers, people WILL watch what you're advertising
Does anyone still remember that Mission: Impossible was 1966 tv series originally? Tom Cruise did such a good job with MI franchise feels like he created it.
This was actually one of my favorite mission impossible movies. There were just so many tense moments with real stakes. This was the first movie where I wasn’t sure who would live and who would die.
8.5/10 and I'm going again tomorrow. Went last night, amazing film. Non stop action, the plot keeps moving with every scene and you don't feel the runtime. Hayley Atwell had a great character arc that felt like someone was finally putting up a fight with Tom. .
sounds promising. how did it compare to Fallout? that's my fave action movie. I'm going to have to wait another 2 weeks because I want to drag my dad along XD
@@tpl6963 Fallout is superior, but also note that death reckoning part 1 is half the story so you don't have that sense of completion at the end. I'd say is easily 85% of what fallout was.
@@selectjed1 How? The Rome driving was more technical than Paris, the bike jump was more dangerous than anything in Fallout, the train sequence was better paced and more tense the helicopter chase.

I knew it! The Metal Gear Solid inspiration is REAL! I knew it from the very first trailer when they talked about the concept of truth, reality, and people's choices in the first trailer with those rooms full of analysts and giant screens that reminded me of the patriots AI 🔥
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I was extremely underwhelmed by Dead Reckoning Part One. The action scenes were impressive, but also repetitive. The story was an absolute mess. This movie needed a good 20 minutes trimmed out of it. It reminded me a lot of the second Matrix movie, pretty to look at but ultimately very unfulfilling. If I'm being honest, I think the only entry in the franchise I liked less was MI:2.
YOU ARE DA BEST REVIEWER! I appreciate that You actually gave an honest review and didn't sit in front of the camera and orgasm about it claiming it is a cinamatic action masterpiece and that Tom is a God... like ALL the major media and most other private reviewers did. Like it's not obvious that they gasmed over this movie in the same way they ignored or bashed Sound of Freedom.
You're right on the villian, Kittridge was enough of a tie back to Ethan's past i dont know how much we get from another character we never met being killed.
Absolutely love the MI franchise but this one really disappointed me. A serious drop in quality after Fallout. Sure the action is mostly there but the story is so bad. Also, something felt off with the way this was filmed. At certain times it felt like characters were just saying their lines like they were doing a monologue or something. I wonder if this was because of Covid.
Ever since #3, the MI movies just keep getting better, and this one is no exception. I agree that the weak point is the villain, but for me it's the villain behind the villain. Although, I have a theory that I'll have to wait a couple years to find out, and that is that the villain is more directly connected to the villain behind the villain than it appears.
As good as this may be I'd still recommend seeing Sound of Freedom. It's truly is a rare film that tackles a particularly deplorable evil that goes unnoticed. Riveting movie. It's not like we haven't seen Tom cruise jump off a cliff ya know...just trying to put your film selection into perspective.
This movie made no sense. If only 1 person knows where the sub is, just destroy the key and kill the guy who knows about the sub. Then no one gets the AI. If every country is trying to get the key, where are they in all these scenes? The keys seem super easy to find since you can just find a buyer to meet you at the airport for a swap. Speaking of which... Who was the buyer at the airport that Grace robbed? Why is he buying half a key? Was he hired by White Widow? Wasn't Grace hired by White Widow to rob the buyer? WHO IS THE ORIGINAL BUYER? If Gabriel is working for the AI, why doesn't he destroy the key so no one can stop the AI? Why does the AI need Gabriel at all? What has he actually accomplished? He failed to get the key at the airport. He failed to get the key on the train. If anything, he's fucking it up for the AI. If the AI is trying to stop Tom Cruise from getting the key, why didn't it actually plant a bomb in the airport and kill him? What was the point of the fake bomb at all? To distract him from getting the key? The AI could have just stopped all his tech from working and Tom Cruise would have been arrested at the airport and then BOOM problem solved. Why didn't Pom use her sword in the narrow alley fight? Why didn't they rob the White Widow at the club after giving her the second half of the key? Tom Cruise couldn't just walk onto the train without a mask because the White Widow would have security all over the place.... but Grace is able to get on the train with a White Widow mask? Why does Tom Cruise give a fuck about Grace? Gabriel says he can choose to save Isla or Grace and he doesn't pick? He's known this girl for 2 days and she keeps fucking him over and he still doesn't pick Isla? What? Why aren't Grace's clothes dirty after laying in coal on the train? Why isn't her face broken after getting cranked by the airbag in her 7th car accident? Is she Wolverine? This movie is full of international top-class spies and every single one of them falls victim to pickpocketing. A key that holds the fate of the world? Front pocket with my car keys and cell phone. Why isn't anyone concerned by the fact that Russia made the entity to begin with? They just put that in the cloud without saving a copy to their desktop? Rookie move.
The movie was good but did feel dragged out and not paced properly. I'm guessing this is because they made 1 movie into 2 parts. Also, the big stunt did seem very anticlimactic.. which is unfortunate after seeing how much training Cruise had to do for it
I saw the film with my family and it was a great film. I'm amazed he's in his 60's and still runs very fast. It goes to show a healthy lifestyle can reward you with a better body. Even if you get old. Tom Cruise is an example of that.
I felt deeply unfulfilled by Dial of Destiny, and as a huge Indiana Jones fan, that was upsetting to me. This movie was everything I wished Dial of Destiny had been.
Just watched it, I agreed with everything you said. It’s funny when you get a studio and lead actor dedicated to make good movies that serve the franchise, great movie theater movie
1/2 - Ghost Protocol, Fallout (Hard to decide so it’s a toss-up but if pressed maybe GP as 1) 3 - Rogue Nation 4 - MI:3 5 - Dead Reckoning: Part One (We’re only half way into the story so it has to be here until we have part 2 then I can reposition as needed) 6 - MI:2 7 - MI:1
Who else thought the action in this movie was mid af? Like, I’m not talking about the setpieces, because driving off a mountain is inherently badass, but the actual fight scenes. The desert scene was actually quite good, but then after they kinda dropped. The car chase scene was ok but it got dropped by lame attempts of humour. Then the club scene was literally just Cruise fighting against four or five people in a seriously mediocre action scene which was a shame because the concept of the club being the entity was really cool. The alley ambush scene was decent tho. The bridge fight was ok but the death scene doesn’t work cuz she was already presumed dead anyway beforehand and we knew she was gonna die. And the train scene. Oh my days that was bad. The fight was completely littered with cuts and fighting on a train is cliche nowadays. Heck even Tintin fought on top of a train before you mfs so you know that’s when u made a mistake, but the scene after was really tense tho. Regardless, it was a fun movie 8/10 overall but the action really limited it for me, cuz with better action the movie could have easily been 10/10
Honestly, ever since Mission Impossible 3, this franchise has been amazingly consistent. I think Fallout was better, but this was in no means a bad movie either.
As much as people like to shit on J.J. Abrams due to Star Wars, people still need to give him credit for putting Mission Impossible back on track with the third movie after the second movie became a massive dissapointment
@@Fl0k5ser The second movie was actually huge when it released, but even then, it was mostly known for gut-bustingly hilarious scenes (like the slow motion motorcycle crash fistfight) that were supposed to be taken seriously. It was Sharknado levels of ridiculous. If you took someone who never saw MI2 and made them watch it after the last few, they'd probably wonder if you slipped them a Keye & Peele parody instead.
The action scenes work so well in these movies because of the way they are filmed. The director photography knocks it out of the park every time. Next time you watch a mission impossible action sequence, observe how it is filmed. It makes all the difference.
The one thing fallout forgot was the big break in scene. The scene that puts the characters together to sneak into somewhere well thought up. I hope Dead Reckoning has that. M:I 1 was leagues ahead a smarter film.
One my least favourites of the latest MI films 😢 not a bad film at all just not my favourite. Far too long, villain I didn't connect with or fully understand, too much slight of hand and pick pock.
I found the faceless omnipotent AI villain boring and the its existence eliminated all the cool tech typically found in the MI series. The dialogue felt rough and awkward. Probably my least favorite entry so far
