I adore, absolutely adore Rogue Nation. When I saw Spectre, I immediately knew I liked this film better, and it made me feel guilty as a Bond fan, a feel of betrayal almost. But this one is so good, I love the opera set piece, Rebecca Ferguson is incredible in it, the gadgets, the tension... Then there's the mask switcheroo stuff in London, which is probably my favourite mask twist of the series, Tom Hollander is so funny in that scene. And the score... The score is so good! That slowed-down, triumphant version of the theme when they trap Lane at the end, brilliant.

Christopher Mcquarrie has done a lot for this franchise and really pushed it. This film while had some Bond elements felt more like Hitchcock because of the suspense to me, I loved it. This film also looks really beautiful

Another McQuarrie/Cruise trip is Jack Reacher (the first one). A bit more grounded, compared to Bond or M:I, but I loved that. Shame that Never Go Back was directed by someone else and that movie was just bland.

@@vaclav_fejt Don't blame the director, Edward Zwick, who is a better director than Mcquarrie

@@dieanotherdaydefender7938 Zwick is a capable director, for formulaeic movies, like The Last Samurai. His best more original work is imho Blood Diamond and it still lacks *something*. Jack Reacher 1 felt fresh. The sequel felt ordinary. Maybe it was the script, but at the end of the day, it is the director's name and director's responsibility. Zwick is probably better for some stuff than McQuarrie and vice versa. For Jack Reacher, the latter is the case.

@@vaclav_fejt McQuarrie also wrote Jack Reacher and doesn't write the sequel which is a big loss. I don't mind the second but it does feel a lot more 'tv two-parter' than the first [which has Bond alumni Rosamund Pike in a key role].

It was so jarring to me watching Spectre a couple of months after this and realising it had the exact same plot, but worse. Rogue Nation kicks ass. This series has done something extremely rare for a film franchise - It has actually gotten better with each new film. No spoilers for you on Fallout, Calvin ….. But it’s the best one yet! It is also very clear that, just as the Bourne series clearly influenced the first couple of Craig films.. I love Rogue Nation, but Fallout is my personal favorite entry in the series. However, Fallout is darker and more serious than this one, so you might not like it as much. But in my opinion, Fallout justifies it's tone and longer length with both higher stakes and more personal character drama. Also, Fallout without a doubt has the best, most thrilling climax of the entire series, I definitely think it ends on a higher note than any of the other films.

Agreed with what some people have commented here, Fallout was the one that really blew everyone's minds. I've known friends who have never seen a single Mission Impossible movie before praise Fallout to be the best action film they've ever seen and that praise is highly warranted, Christopher McQuarrie outdid himself by infusing references to past Mission installments and he even tied up loose ends which he didn't need to but by God, it was done so brilliantly and satisfying. I genuinely didn't like the first 3 much at all but they really have managed to warm to the latest ones. The Opera scene too? It's almost like the entire film was Quantum of Solace done right? ... or is it SPECTRE done right? Seeing these films are so interesting alongside the latest Bond flms (barring Skyfall obviously) because it really puts into perspective just how much EON need to up their game? I am a fan of the original M.I. television series having watched it air as a child and I completely agree that each movie improves. That is based on the fact that each movie gets closer and closer to the television show's best qualities: that it is a team effort and that the show practices the 'show, don't tell' philosophy. If you weren't back in front of the television from your bathroom or 'make a sandwich' break by the time the commercials were over, you'd likely be lost in the plot because you missed a detail that was onscreen but not verbalized. :-) It truly held to the reality that television is a visual medium. If you want things auditory so you can know what is happening without being in the room or using your eyes, then just listen to the radio.

Really enjoyed this review (and this movie, which is my favorite MI film). MI:4 really righted the ship for M:I, reworking Tom Cruise into Mark Harmon’s character in NCIS- a sort of saintly mentor who could easily be guiding younger characters in future installments rather than taking all the chances. Every film since then has leaned a little closer to the older Hunt character, not necessarily for the better, and while I do not wish to see Cruise in more romantic subplots, this film really does get everything right. It doesn’t really matter that the first two scenes with Elsa were likely swapped, or that the ending is lazy. The motorcycle stunts are the best of the series, the opera fight gave me vertigo (ha) and the supporting cast is finally settling into some consistency so I can root for them too. I WAS really thrown by the villain, though- he looked distractingly like Simon Pegg to me and I expected that to have some twist/ payoff. Also, get used to the “shot first, scripted later” style of moviemaking, because that only gets worse from here.

Would he likewise be guilty of overshadowing his movies, or is it ok when he does it? Perhaps because those products come as Jackie Chan vehicles first, plot second (or seventh), haha.

I find it crazy that in a film with a 150 million dollar production (probably twice that when all the marketing is said and done), and a product with the potential to make up to a billion dollars would not have a air tight story and plot before production begins. I get dialogue being messed with a little but not plot. Perhaps this is more common that I realize with these types of movies. Still seems insane to me.

Fallout is the best of the bunch (except maybe for the first one). I'd just say that it has strong resemblance to Ronin and it really plays on the expectations and conditioning of the audience, especially in the last act.

Rogue Nation falls short against Ghost Protocol, but is definitely a great Mission, the fourth-best overall. When I heard that we were getting a Mission: Impossible movie and a James Bond movie the same year, I was excited, but I was more excited for the latter mainly because they were bringing back the SPECTRE organization and Blofeld after over forty years. I’m sure you could relate to that. In the end, I agree with you that Rogue Nation ended up being the better spy thriller of the two.

I liked Ghost Protocol more. Him climbing the skyscraper is an actually cool real stunt, the plane and water thing in this movie do feel too removed from reality despite the way it was achieved.
@calvindyson
@calvindyson 3 года назад
I can totally appreciate that. I hadn’t really considered the stunts in that way but you’re totally right. The skyscraper sequence felt so REAL where the plane and water sequences here (despite being the stunt work involved) just felt removed from reality like you say.

@@calvindyson I've only seen Rogue Nation once while I've seen Ghost Protocol like three times so my memory of Rogue Nation isn't as strong as my memory of the other one, but I also just remember having more fun in general with Ghost Protocol. Like the opening bit with them clowning around in the Kremlin was fun, and while both movies are a bit lame in terms of actual villains that car lift thing in India also felt more real with how those cars were smashing down. Ultimately I feel like Rogue Nation was slowly backsliding in to the iffy cartoony unreality of the first two MI movies regardless of how much the characters make grim, pained faces and limp a little bit after taking a fall and the washed out colors that are supposed to mean that a movie is "serious". Still better than Spectre, though!
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja 3 года назад
@@DioBrandoWRYYYYYY I love Ghost Protocol but I prefer Rouge Nation because I feel more invested with the story [possibly due to the director also being the writer]. The underwater scene you mentioned might look a bit unreal but while the skyscraper scene is exciting in the story [in order to pull off the next part of the plan] the underwater sequence has the added story element of Hunt passing out and Faust having to save him-partly due to the necessity of needing Hunt for the rest of her plan, but also as she is falling in love with him, so I get that extra depth to it. Rouge Nation, in particular with Ilsa Faust, has more emotion present which would be further expanded on in Fallout but in fairness each to there own.
@DioBrandoWRYYYYYY
@DioBrandoWRYYYYYY 3 года назад
@@jamesatkinsonja I don't really care about the story to MI movies, I just like the spectacle. The underwater scene looks like a video game level, and the more I think about him holding on to the plane the more I hate it. I don't care if he actually did it physically for the stunt, it's a ridiculous, unrealistic, shark-jumping stunt because if the intent was realism... Well then Hunt would either get smashes to the ground by the sheer velocity slamming in to him, or he'd first shred every muscle in his arm and THEN smash in to the ground. Like Rogue Nation presents itself as more "serious" but I actually think it only ends up making the whole thing seem even dumber than it already is.

Problem with Spectre was that every bit of production felt phoned in. The car chase, aesthetic of spectre, third act, even the henchman and how he was handled felt boring and phoned in. (according the wiki he had metal fingernails..... WHY DIDN'T THEY HAVE HIM USE THAT MORE?? Imagine how more badass his intro would have been. Spin the victim in the chair, stop it facing him and either rip out his throat or slash it open before he cleans his hand and sits down) It's like nobody... and I do mean NOBODY felt excited or motivated to make this movie. Like a kid forced to do homework.
@jamesatkinsonja
@jamesatkinsonja 3 года назад
I got the feeling Sam Mendes lost interest in Spectre about half way through. The script was constantly being reworked [the entire 3rd act was changed after the Sony hack] and it was also going to be two back to back movies at one stage [hence the Blofeld cliffhanger]. The edit was only done 3 weeks before the premier [probably explains why it's overlong]. I think everyone was just glad to get it done which is why they took a break before starting work on Bond 25.

Oh boy oh boy. If you loved Rogue Nation, then I can't wait for the reaction of Fallout. Its funny how Rogue Nation and Spectre had so much in common. Syndicate and Spectre. Mad supervillain obsessed with the protagonist and world domination. Another great work of Christopher McQuarrie is Jack Reacher. Its a low-key good movie with good suspense and keeps you on the edge of the seat.

Fallout is definitely on the same level. I think both McQuarrie films are of very similar quality. I think maybe RN’s central setpieces are a shade stronger but Fallout has the stronger climax.
