William Carey (1761-1834) was an English Baptist missionary, often referred to as the "father of modern missions." Carey is best known for his work in India, where he spent most of his life translating the Bible into local languages and spreading the Gospel.
Carey was born in Paulerspury, England, and worked as a shoemaker before becoming a Baptist minister. He had a deep passion for spreading the Gospel and believed that all Christians had a duty to share the message of salvation with the world.
In 1793, Carey and a small group of fellow missionaries traveled to India, where they established a mission in the city of Serampore, near Calcutta. Carey was instrumental in translating the Bible into Bengali and several other Indian languages, a task that took him many years to complete.
Carey's work in India was not without challenges. He faced opposition from the British colonial authorities and struggled to overcome cultural barriers and religious differences. However, he persevered in his mission, establishing schools and churches throughout the region and sharing the Gospel with thousands of people.
One of Carey's most lasting legacies was his advocacy for social justice and human rights. He spoke out against the practice of sati (the ritual burning of widows) and worked to abolish the caste system in India. His efforts helped to pave the way for social reform and greater equality in the region.
Carey's work in India inspired countless other missionaries and sparked a wave of interest in foreign missions throughout Europe and North America. His dedication to spreading the Gospel and his commitment to social justice have earned him a place in history as one of the most influential Christian figures of the modern era.
