Some Missouri Valley, Iowa, seniors are looking for new homes after an announced increase in rent. New owners point to an expired grant and expanded amenities.
There are many places in the US with low rents. But people like to live in popular areas. I'm 65 and moving to the Philippines this year. Nice studio apartment there is $100-200 /mo. Nice climate, nice people. A nice 3 bedroom house right on the beach (rocky beach) is about $400/mo. But sure, sad people can't live wherever they want for the price they want. As my father said "Life is tough Bud."
@@MrWaterbugdesign THANK YOU! I've been saying this for years now. You don't have to stay where it's expensive. There are many, MANY parts of the world where you can live like a king for $1,000 a month or less. I'm talking rent, food, healthcare, transportation, clothing, internet and cable/netflix/whatever and electricity, the whole nine. And in almost all cases, the healthcare is way better than in the US and you won't end up with shock bills that you can't afford to pay. Every year, many retirement websites put out the list of the 25 best places to retire on $1K or less. Ideally, it's always better to own your home. Then, you never have to worry about rent and even if you're still paying a mortgage, the price is at least fixed. But if you can't afford that, you don't have to stay in the US or some other expensive part of the world.
I don’t. They have a lifetime to get their shit together and yet they don’t, and seem blissfully nonchalant. They scream at younger people for being entitled yet expect everyone to feel sorry for them. They contributes the least and have the least value to society. The fact that old people is tolerated is already enough mercy.
As someone that is 65 I empathize. I have worked very hard all of my life or at least from the age of 15. But you know what? I am ok. Perspective is a valuable thing I have aquired. We all, regardless of age, can take better care of eachother.
@@candy4428 I disagree. That is not how it works. First of all, this is your life. Being terrified is unhelpful. A lot of people do not have the option of investing. And, bottom line, we all die.
If the vast majority of the residents living in this facility are seniors on fixed incomes, exactly where does Azria Health Longview think the extra money for these rent increases is supposed to come from? Are the seniors supposed to suddenly go out and get jobs? They don't have any more money to give. But you already knew that! This makes no sense. Nothing but greed.
Some will probably get roommates like the one lady who has a 2 bedroom. Lots of that happening in California. I know an elderly widow who rents out all 3 bedrooms in her 4 bed house. It's the only way she can make the payment.
I know some senior citizens who have a home but they are choosing to move into a car right now to save $800 a month for what might happen in the next year or two years because they maybe only have $40,000 in savings and that could be eaten up in one medical event
Capitalism. They've outlived their usefulness and are not profitable through the means of labor and production. We live in a society that embraces the lowest possible cost for the highest profit. We live in a throw away society, and high quality of goods isn't profitable so we've been trained to accept inferior goods and services as the norm. Landlords want to make profits so why is it so surprising they'd want to squeeze as much profit as possible. They aren't in the business of caring. Capitalism doesn't care about equality and fairness. It's unfortunate what is happening all over the US, but when corporations run the government the little people lose. We live in a plutocracy and people keep voting for it because they're focusing on issues that are smoke screens to distract from real issues.

@@youtubesucks1499 It's interesting that you ask what gives someone the right to take someone else's property. The story is based in the US, a country founded by people and later a government that literally came into someone's homeland and took it all. It's not surprising that people with that mindset would embrace capitalism and all its problems. Profit is good; it's a motivator and people should be rewarded for their effort. That said, setting up a system where the minority controls the majority of wealth and resources because they make the rules and continue to give themselves the upper hand while holding down everyone else is pretty messed up. This is why the people in power argue about immaterial issues so that people won't focus on the things that matter. This is how they keep the upper hand.
its unconscionable and greedy what is happening with unaffordable housing for seniors and low income people. The Government and its system is accountable to the epidemic of homelessness...Greed and heartlessness towards the most vulnerable! shame on them!

Happening in Tennessee also sadly. This is a national disgrace! I've been in this apartment for at least 7 year's. Greed is the main cause! These apartments are not worth the money they want.

Go to LA. There are plenty of seniors and disabled vets living on the streets. But all the undocumented immigrants have housing. Maybe our senile Mr. President has made deals with some of these corporations to house illegals. There are some beautiful complexes in LA which are for illegals only. That's why they are bussing them all over the country now. All funded by US taxpayers. Makes me sick.
They have millions of illegal immigrants but that's why they're kicking the seniors in the veterans out they don't care about the older generation they just want the vote of the immigrants you don't see any of those on the street but you still see our women men and children living in tents on the street and now seniors and veterans and disabled people

That happened to me in aAtlanta.. 30 percent increase from big boy takeover,, then I had to pay out $4000 to move my things to another state out of Georgia I am a senior this is such a burden I’m trying to pay this all back..
The federal government needs to step in and take these senior living homes from greedy corporations and offer seniors a price based on their income. Even $800 a month is appalling for a senior on fixed income.
I wish the government would stop this there she has to leave for friends and she was one of the first people to move there and she keeps her place very nice senior citizens shouldn't have to go through this and after they made a complaint they lowered the rent so that goes to show you that they were ripping her off but it's too much for her on budgeted income I understand want to raise my rent 37% so I can't stay & another lease either this is not inflation this is price gouging.
Why the government? That’s the problem, too many expecting someone else to bail them out. These people should have prepared, not to mention, renting forever gets you nowhere.

That’s because they want to get away from having Medicaid renters which pay very little compared to cash renters which pay $4,000+/mos. My mom is the last one in a facility who is on Medicaid and her rent went up when social security got a cost of living increase…her rent went up $125 while her social security $55.
Many rentals are owned by blue collar workers that saved instead of spending for their future. Rents are high because costs and taxes are so high. Rent control would be o.k if when repairs need to be made, unit is destroyed by tenant, tenant doesn't pay rent and GOVERNMENT pays, AND IF utilities don't go up and property taxes aren't raised, then I as a landlord would vote for rental control, if not I would sell my rentals to home buyers and let the renters go to hell looking for a few less rentals to live in!!
$1500 for a 2ba 2br including meals. Assisted living also includes laundry, house keeping, set up your meds, activities. Looks like a pretty nice place, the price doesn't sound that bad. it is a huge jump all at once but there was government support for so many years that kept the rent low. Sounds like it's just now back to where it should be.

850$ for 2 bed 2 bath and utilities included….come on people rental properties need to make a profit, what do you expect from them to take a loss forever ?
If you don't own your home, you should not have any expectation that you will live that house forever. Homeowners are under threat of losing everything because of the gross mismanagement of our country. Landlords took a huge hit when they were told they were not allowed to evict for non payment of rent.
They did not. It is not about who took the loss. Why is it that we are in this situation? It is not about supporting renters that cannot afford or owners that cannot. Why is it an, "either, or"? These are questions we are not encouraged to ask.
Build more housing. Flood the market with enough housing, more than what the demand is and prices stabilize or drop as landlords are forced to lower rent and compete for tenants. We have competition everywhere expect in housing, healthcare, and utilities. When the government is helping to fuel this unaffordable housing crisis by blocking new construction through zoning laws or cutting funding to build and sustain affordable housing it’s making the problem worse. Simply pointing the finger at landlords is an easy scapegoat and doesn’t address the real root cause.
While zoning laws don't help, that's not the issue. Shell companies are coming in and buying everything up. This drives up the costs of homes to the point that only the upper middle class and the wealthy can afford it and even they land up severely overpaying for homes. Those who can't afford to buy, have to rent. At that point, these shell companies can raise the rent as much as they feel like.
