YES! I instantly knew where she was coming from when she said that... today's music is very much lacking, and it sounds like everybody is trying to sound the same and I haven't heard authentic r&b on the mainstream in a while.

@UnreleasedUnderratedRnBgrooves
Missy Elliott never lies. Seems after both Aaliyah & Left Eye died R&B music plummeted badly and did a nose dive around mid-2005 when the sound & format for music entirely shifted. A damn shame. RIP Babygirl.

Yeah I’m not a fan of young people music. I still listen to music ranging from 60s - 2010s. All I hear now is that so called rap music, I didn’t know people still make R&B music. Anyway, although I was born in 1998, I grew up listening to old music from my mother, grandfather and from Grand Theft Auto games. According to my mother, I like Aaliyah music since I was a baby especially Are You that Somebody. Her and Michael Jackson always was my two favorite singers.

I think the thing that's possibly made music worse is the internet, although it's made artists, it's also given everyone entitlement who aren't actually talented but manage to become famous which means everyone starts to sound worse.

So true I agree with Missy R&b is not the same and for me it has begun when Aaliyah passed away she was all the r&b music industry super high talented respectful beautiful 😘 every real R&b and Hip Hop people know and feel that I hope god is taking care of her Aaliyah was an Angel on earthy but would have been a powerful R&b superstar with talented and honourable rules. The real standards that Real R&b had in the last 90s Aaliyah was a sort of an R Kelly female version an R&b genius spreading positives vibes rest in peace baby girl I still love every day I care 4 u 😓😓😓😓 you are truly deeply missed to that discosting and missing R&b industry

When they we're talking about Aaliyah's spirit I cried tears of joy. It just made me love her all over again. And Missy's right. Something has been missing in the music industry. I hope that they can fix that then we wouldn't have to play One In A Million over and over again or Brenda's Got A Baby or Ready to Die. And don't try to replace these legends, just add on so we can have more legends

No one is authentic and their individual selves anymore. Instagram and social media has taken over. It's not hard to be famous, you don't need talent to be famous. I think that's what happened. Artists like aaliyah, biggie etc had huge talent, worked hard and loved it. That's the difference between back then and now sadly and i find it hard to take many artists seriously these days.

You really know it's bad when (nine years ago) 1 of music's most prominent writer/producer/artists say everything sounds the same and it still be pretty accurate in 2022. I get 99% of my r&b fix from 60's 70's 80's 90's and some early 2000's. She ain't wrong!

Missy is so on point in this interview. True R&B really is missing from the game. What's passing for R&B now is just pop music--basically a watered down version of the essence of R&B music. If you want soul/R&B now, you basically have to listen to artists like Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Ledisi and some others.

Finally someone is saying exactly what's happening or at least questioning what's going on. I agree with you hundred percent.Something has happened I can't really put my finger on it but somehow it seems that there's an extraordinary amount of super talented artist, celebrity, call it by whatever name out here that are technically incredible even mind blowing.And it isn't just the music industry but I see it in just about every artform. there's no mystery, magic even a sort of vulnerability that these incredible artist from so called back in the day had i know about how everybody usually says that people they listen to and watched in there day were the best. I'm not talking about that.I think lots of different things play into this starting with social media internet and all that jazz. But in a way I think it's even something more than just that. I'm tired lol. but thanks Missy Elliot for bringing it up.i thought it was me..TBC

Definitely agree that she carried a mystique about her very well. That added to her legendary status. Beyoncé when she first came out had the same thing. She never overshared. However Beyoncé didn’t have a natural illusion. It was more fabricated and put on. No one wants to buy what’s readily available in general . Scarcity creates demand. Doja cat needs to get off social media in its entirety despite how it made her. She has potential to propel to stardom.

It's like an alternate universe you sometimes see in DC comics where they depict what the world would have been like if superman or batman died how would it affect the grand scheme of things, it's like that with Aaliyah only we happen to live in the horrible universe where Aaliyah did die and the ripples of that are spread everywhere all over music. Imagine An alternate reality where Aaliyah didn't get on that plane and was alive today. What a beautiful industry it would be.
