Mistakes I made while speaking Turkish 

Before I get any comments on this, YES I’m coughing a lot in this video and NO I do not have corona virus. My OG subscribers will know that I’ve been coughing in videos since the beginning but it is totally unrelated to COVID-19. That being said, I hope everyone is being safe during this challenging time🤍 I’m thinking of all of you and we will get through this together guys! Love you all!

tabii canım = elbette yaparım canım ( isteği yerine getiriyor ) tabii canım = haklısın tabii ( hak veriyor ) tabii canım = olmaz öyle şey tabi ( onaylamıyor ) tabii canım = hı hı kesin öyledir ( inanmıyor ) harbiden dilimiz baya efsane.

"Canım" is not like a flirty word you can use for everyone :D

Try not to freak out when you hear the Turkish idiom "aç mısın açıkta mısın" :D it means "are you hungry and unsheltered? -what's all this fuss about?-"

I saw you in Izmir metro Chelsea. I wanted to say ''Hi'' to you but doors already closed and i could say '' Bye Chelsea i love you :')''

These two words (seçmek ve sıçmak) always put me in embarrassing moments 🤦‍♀️

I had the exact same experience with my Turkish bf who said tabii canim to his ex. It was later on I realized that it’s just a figure of speech for friends, not some intimate thing. What’s more intimate is aşkım, sevgilim, etc. But yeah, I found that part funny and relatable.

In france when we learn english we were also taught that it's called a shirt and never heard of button down shirts

A button downed shirt is just called a shirt in British English and a no buttoned shirt is a t-shirt 🤔 so if he said it to a Brit they would have understood him. I guess he has been learning British English not American English.

"Tabi canım" means: "of course my friend" "you are right" "I agree" "no way" "I don't believe you"(in this case we use [tabi tabi] instead of [tabi canım]). Notice that, intonation is crucial and different for each meanings, you can get used by hearing in daily life or directly hearing from a Turkish guy who teachs you :)) The word "canım" here is not very intimate like "darling" but we don't use it to people who we don't know well or who are not our close friends. ;)

Acaba sıkıntısı ne? Ben de adamın havalı olduğunu düşünmüştüm." diye merak etmişler. Neden? Neden böyle düşünüyorsunuzki? (Türklere bu durum çok saçma geliyor) Adamın ana dili ingilizce değilki? Aynı durumla karşılaşan bir Türk olsa sadece gülüp geçerdi ve hiç takılmazdı. Örneğin; Amerikalı bir arkadaşımız Migros'ta kasiyere "açık mısın?" diyeceğine "aç mısın?" dediğini düşünelim. Kasiyer şöyle düşünmezdi. "Aç mıyım? Alla alla ne demek istiyor acaba? Aç olduğumuda nereden çıkardı? Aç gibi mi gözüküyorum? Acaba yüzüm mü solgun o yüzden mi böyle düşündü?" gibi uzun uzun saçma şeyler düşünmezdi. Kültür farklılığı.

Türkçedeki çoğu kelime o an ki yüz mimiklerine ve söyleyiş tarzına göre değişebiliyor ve buda bize kolaylık sağlıyor fakat ana dili eklemeli bir dil olmayan bir kişi için biraz zor :d

"Tabi canım" is polite way of saying "Yes, that's right, indeed"

"Tabi canim" is something we use for make fun of people politely. Like you dont wanna really mock but you just didnt believed what he/she said to you.

"Tabi canım" ise "Aynen, Katılıyorum, Evet, Tabi ki" gibi bir anlamı var. ❤️❤️❤️ This is the first time I've heard of this perfume-cologne distinction from you, I will consider this when speaking English. In Turkey, more cologne (KOLONYA) "bored-pouring alcohol disinfectant containing handled" using the sense .. "TABİ CANIM" has a meaning like "Exactly, I Agree, Yes, Of course". I'm from south africa and my first language is english and here we also refer to it as a shirt (formal), not a button down shirt. T-shirt for a casual top and Golf Shirt/Golfer if the top has a collar lol

Tabii canım is also used to add sarcasm, for example you're talking about how much you hate your cat, which everyone knows isn't true so it's obviously a joke, and they say tabii canım like "yeaaah right of course" so you should probably also keep that in mind

I love your blog! I taught in Turkey right down the street from where you live at the American Collegiate Institute in Haytay. You bring back so many fond memories! I liveed in İzmir in the 1990s when there was outrageous inflaton "zam". I think “canım” not always means “my dear”. It literally means: “my life”, or “myself”. And when you use it in phrases, it kind of gives the meaning of “I agree, myself”. Like “yok canım”, it means: “not at all” or “I don’t think so”. “Canım” emphasises “me”, “my opinion”. So, it actually makes a sense for me as a Turkish person. 😘

One of the most embarrassing moments happen to me is when I was explaining to someone how I was making homemade jam and instead of ı I said i in the word for squeezing... blah blah sıkıyordum blah blah... When his eyes went out I understood it but it was too late. I just continued talking, pretending I didn't notice 😬 Since then I don't use that word at all! I am avoiding any use of word sıkılmak although I am hearing it a lot.

A button down shirt is just called a shirt in UK English. No one, literally no one, calls it a button down/button up. I guess that's why it's taught that way in Turkey.

The thing with saying just "canım" is that, it's not really that intimate. You can say that to acquaintances or to your lover. It really depends on the personality of the one who is saying it. Turkish people are passionate and love to use words like that. Saying "Tabii canım" is pure sarcasm😆

In England the button down shirt is just called a shirt. Anything else would be a top or t-shirt. As a foreigner who used to live in turkey I love your videos. Great to hear similar stories from another person!

Cologne will probably be interpeted as kolonya, which you'd know especially nowadays with the virus, is way different than cologne.

The guy was showing his shirt said “i wear this shirt for you”, and you understood him wrong.. you thought about he doesnt wear anything in normal because of he said shirt instead of button down shirt?!? Wtf, i can not get the situation, the guy is showing you his shirt with his hand and he is trying to tell you he wear that cloth for you. why is the fuckin word so important as much as change the meaning of the situation. If he said i wear a cloth for you, i would think as yea you r right to understood him wrong, but he is talking about a cloth where his on, thats mean he is talking about how valiable clothes that he is wearing.

You must use question attachments seperate. For an example : "Açmısın" That's wrong. "Aç mısın" That's true.

i love it. Very cute stories. i would just add something for the shirt subject. Generally turkish schools are teaching british english. And they teach also how americans say and write things. But "i even wore a shirt for you" i believe very acceptable sentence for europeans. Shirt is "gömlek" for British eng. Only Americans say shirt for everything wearable on top i guess.

Some input from a British English perspective: - Perfume is used to describe fragrance for men and women. Personally, I don't think I have ever used the word 'cologne' to refer to men's fragrance. Cologne is a fragrance with a lower concentration of oils compared to perfume. - We call a button-down shirt a 'shirt'. I've never heard someone who's not American saying 'button-down' or 'Oxford' shirt. A shirt without a collar is a 't-shirt'. A shirt without sleeves is a tank top or a vest. And the collective term for all of these is a 'top'. So it's just a matter of perspective. If you've used the words 'perfume' and 'shirt' in that context before, you're not wrong :)

Can you explain onomatopoeic words? Why birds "tweet" instead of "cik cik" or dogs "bark" instead of "hav"?

Hi Chelsea , In the UK we just call , if it has buttons a Shirt . what you are wearing in the vid is called a T shirt or if it has just a coller and a few buttons it's called a Polo shirt . hope this helps next time ! .

"Tabi canım" means "Of course, absolutely" in English.

Hi Chelsea! I am afraid that guy didn't say something wrong. "Shirt" is used for Oxford Shirt in British English. So when you say I am wearing a shirt in the UK, everyone will understand as what you describe as Oxford shirt etc. P.s. Severek izliyoruz. :)

"canım" word can also be a filler word. If someone throws that word into the conversation, it'd be vague that either he/she means it or trying to "approach", in other words to hit on the other. Though it is vague, it comes in handy.
