Don't forget to put metal plates on the studs where the plumbing lines go through studs to prevent naiils or screws puting holes in your plumbing.
@williamdunbar8554
@williamdunbar8554 3 года назад
This is very important, especially since you're using Pex in the walls. Those little metal plates will save you from untold headaches... Even if you happen to use copper in some places, don't forget those metal plates. Plumbers carry those by the boat load in their trucks.

I'd trust that copper pex crimping ring for use behind the wall over a sharkbite o-ring. I only use sharkbite in exposed areas.

crimp rings are great I live in a area where it gets down to -40 and had a water line freeze and still no leaks. The pex is great because of its ability to expand and not bust. The shark bites that they have replaced are far more expensive and no more reliable in my humble opinion.

I'm another... remodeler/contractor for many years. Sharkbite is crap. If I use pex, I now use nothing but uponor bc I've had leaks /failures from the other. The majority of fails were from freezing, it will literally push the fitting off. Crimp rings & upemor are the better option by far. Hope you dont forget your stud plates bc that waterline is very close to the sheetrock side. Be hell to do all this and drive a nail/screw thru a tube on the last piece of rock.
@alaskanken2132
@alaskanken2132 3 года назад
@@bobtexan592 I was thinking the same thing .At the bear minimum put the pex further into the stud .it would suck to mount a cabinet and drive a screw into a water line.

You are the first ones to say you’re not professionals (YET you DO do most of your stuff on a very professional level), and like I said, you are gracious to the viewers who may point out an error, if it’s going to be an issue, admit it and repair it without copping an attitude like some RU-vidrs saying you’re Doing. @@BrianBriCurInTheOC I have and currently am using PEX products in my new house build and shop building. Shark bites have not been around as long as other methods of connecting. PEX itself and the copper crimping have been used for 25 years mostly in early years in concrete floors and other flooring methods. I guess we will find out in time. Polybutylene was thought to be great at one time and look what happened. Mostly in the connections but also some of the pipe itself. Myself I would not quite trust using them behind walls etc! I use them everywhere else. Personal preference.

As many have already posted, the crimp rings are a proper termination for PEX. After crimping, you check them with a GO, NO Go gauge to insure proper crimping. The standard way to place shutoffs is to solder copper stub elbows that are made for PEX to the copper strap that spans the studs. It would also be wise to install some heat tape to the pipes in your valve box so that they don't freeze since they are above the frost line. The bare end of the elbow will take a compression shutoff.

Shark bite fittings have an O. ring inside that may only last about 10 years + / - I use the copper crimp fittings and they hold up better. If the use of shark bite they should be used in accessible areas.

Jeremy, why in the world did you decide to change from the copper rings to shark bites??? I must have missed something somewhere. You have gone from being correct to actually risking leaks within your walls. The copper rings are a proven system including in a finished wall but none of my plumbing subcontractors will use a shark bite in a finished wall as they only use them for repairs for short term and between different pipes (pecans-copper) Some plumbers if they feel they want the extra security on Lexington, they will double band with two copper rings. I have built a lot of homes in my years Jeremy and have never had a ring leak!! What you have done will work and since it’s only a temporary home then you should be fine but please don’t do that in your permanent home, you will have long term issues. I’m a retired custom home builder and have been using pex with copper rings for 30+ years and no issues

Also covering with 40# tar paper before backfilling will help the frost stay away from the water/drain lines. I know that where they are there is not a bunch of regulations. But always follow the ones closest to you for safe water/drain line protection. You can get by with other services not working with temporary fixes. But drains & water has no quick fixes.

My parents live a few hours from Vegas, and have a climate that's similar except for a few times when it has gotten much colder. The kitchen sink pipes froze inside the walls. They set up a propane heater outside and pointed it at the wall for a few hours. It thawed out the pipes, and didn't even burn down the house, success!

This is Diana's husband, Scott - I've worked for a public water utility for 36 years & am familiar with building codes in Kansas. We just watched you test your water supply lines to your mini home. I'm just concerned about separation of your water supply lines & the septic/sewer line. Do they share the same ditch? Just concerned about any potential cross connections occurring. Here in KS, the separation of a potable water line & a septic/sewer line is 10' horizontal if running parallel and 2' vertical when crossing each other. Just thought I'd mention this if it would help avoid any future problems. We really have enjoyed watching your RU-vid videos - keep up the good work! 🙂

This results in the washer drain overflowing, flooding the laundry room, too frequently for my happiness. Their is nothing wrong with compressed rings been using them a long time. Somebody is selling sharkbits

My plumber husband says the same thing. When he heard him say sharkbites he started saying...Nooo!! He's been plumbing 40 years and said those copper rings will last for 100 years, but those shark bites are going to give him trouble.

the rings are better than the shark bite, u never want to put shark bite behind the wall

That what I was going to say. It does not help that the pipes are so small. If a tap is left dripping over night could freeze solid.

I've seen shark bite fittings fail more times than not in my career. I hope they work for you. Once you close the walls up and they fail you're in for a world of hurt.

True. If crimp rings are installed to spec they are far better than the push on Sharkbites. If they had an inspection, the job would not pass due to the concealing of the push ons.

Someone's got a sharkbite sponsorship. There is NO other reason to ditch crimped for push-fit inside a wall cavity. Utter madness.

I don't know anybody who would put a sharkbite inside a closed wall.

Sharkbite behind walls Fact: SharkBite fittings are IAPMO tested and approved for behind-the-wall and underground applications. ... “Push fit fittings can be utilized in underground applications and as manufactured joints without access panels.

@@terrye6196 Yes if properly installed, very few people install them properly including removing the sharp edge of the pipe insuring they are seated all the way by using a gauge and marking the pipe to insure the pipe is all the way in. I didn't see any of these techniques used in this video. In contrast the pex crimping if done properly is tried and true.
@timddholm
@timddholm 3 года назад
As a plumber I would stay with the copper ring but just know that I have seen pex pipe freeze and thaw out and not leak but the brass fittings will split and leak in just 1 freeze I live in a area frost line is 6 ft

@@RetiredPilot Nothing wrong with using copper rings, I just wanted to mention that the Sharkbites were approved for hidden and underground connections.

@@terrye6196 As I agree I have two on a electric instant hot water heater that have been installed for 10 years, however they were properly installed. Most sharkbite failures that I know of was caused by the O ring being damaged on installation or the sharkbite being used more than once without lube on the O ring.
