I really don’t understand why you keep putting era 1 and era 2 in the same category. It feels like comparing the prequels to the original star wars series. They’re two different series on the same world.

It's a shame you don't have a category for cursing, Gentlemen Bastards would blow every other series out of the water in that one, I consider Scott Lynch to be the poet laureate of swearing.

"I can't wait to have words with the Gray King when all this shit is finished," Locke whispered. "There's a few things I want to ask him. Philosophical questions. Like, "How does it feel to be dangled out a window by a rope tied around your balls, motherfucker?"

The way Scott Lynch writes curse words is the reason I was hooked, then of course I fell in love with the characters and world; but those perfect curse lines.

Great video, man! Gentlemen Bastards is one of my favourite fantasy series EVER. It has some of the best world-building I've ever seen; unlike Wheel of Time (whose world-building is composed primarily of, "Oh, we just met a new character? Let's spend ninety paragraphs talking about how their culture works!"), all the information in GB is parcelled out superbly, giving you tantalizing new information about the world while still leaving an air of mystery to everything. I can't wait for Books 4-7. Gorgeous stuff. I've never read Mistborn, but now you've got me intrigued. Thanks, Daniel!

Sanderson himself has said that Mistborn was originally pitched as "a trilogy of trilogies", and that Era 2 was not one of the original trilogies pitched. It is something that he came up with along the way, books he wrote when on a break from writing things he "had" to write under contract. More an "Era 1.5" than a true Era 2. I think it then makes sense that they aren't as strong in the general Mistborn/Cosmere timeline.

Blind Guardian has two really good songs about Wheel of Time, if you like metal. They are called "Ride into Obsession" and "Wheel of Time". Those two songs are what got me interested in Wheel of Time in the first place.

Mistborn era 2 isn't one of the main trilogies. IIrc sanderson wrote it largely so he could figure out the transition to the second main trilogy better. A bit like saying New Spring is part of Wheel of Time, when its more a side story for worldbuilding. Of course since its sanderson, it ended up being larger than originally intended. There's also a 4th book coming out next year I hope will make things make more sense.

I would suggest instead of going over you collection, which it is an awesome collection, maybe a collage of your fantasy book covers, so we can see what you have. (Like a really quick flash of covers like maybe 3-4 frames per cover like a flip book) The music was cool. Really enjoyed that. The main reason I disliked the actual video of the intro is that it does a little too much, can't read the titles, can't focus on any of your nicknacks and it doesn't feel like it accomplishes much. Maybe slow it down a bit at least so we can see what you have, but even that would get old after the first time. If you're aiming for an intro video, I like the flash of covers or dude, I've never made a RU-vid intro in my life, so take everything with a grain of salt. -Jeremy

The intro is cool, kepp it pls :D Anyways, the Table of Metallic Arts is kinda wrong, because the God Metals (Atium and Lerasium) aren't really part of the 16 metals. They should be replaced with Cadmium and Bendalloy.

I finished the first Mistborn Trilogy and can`t understand, why there is such an Hype for Vin.... 1. Kelsier 2. Sazed 3. Breeze 4. Elend Venture ( it`s quite funny, that Elend means misery in german, he was a big red herring for me) 5. Tensoon 6. Lord Ashweather Cett 7. Spook 8. Rashek 9. Dockson 10 Tindyl 11. Ham 12. Vin 13. Marsh 14. Clubs 15. Allrianne Cett 16. Ham

Hi Daniel I wonder if tried "Cycle of Arawn" it has the same vibe as Gentlmen Bastards. It has 2 bros and they are sort of a caiotic good characters. The book also have a very dark humour aspect.

@macmay3042

The Bastards never get redeemed, because they're only shown to steal from rich "bad guys" and so they are already good guys, so there's nothing to redeem. That's like pointing out that Robin Hood doesn't get a redemption arc; it's because he's the hero. Also, I dunno, I'm not able to like a Mary Sue as much as you do, however bromantic he is.
@SAGERUNE
@SAGERUNE 5 лет назад
Thieves Prosper, The rich remember. The part of their character that people totally skimp on is their devotion to the crooked warden, locke being a godsdamned priest of him. Of course they are good guys, just not in the usual sense. I think my favorite parts of the books are when they have to justify their lifestyle to those in power, or apologize for fucking someone over.

I have been enjoying your videos immensely. Especially the WoT summaries. Like you, it is my favorite series, for many of the same reasons. Because you like hard magic systems, I have 2 recommendations. 1) The Dragon Prince and Dragon Star trilogies from Melanie Rawn. You will see some similarities to Jordan's system. 2) Robin Hobb - The Farseer Books.. It is told in 1st person, pretty rare for a fantasy series. There are 4 trilogies, all in the same universe and they are all pretty good.

I can agree with a lot of your points, but I completely disagree on readability. I devoured Book 1 of Gentlemen Bastards, and have started and stopped Book 2 at least 3 times already and have never finished it. On the other hand, I have read every Mistborn novel and plan to re-read.
@blackice1796
@blackice1796 4 года назад
Ben Kohlmeyer I’m a bit of the opposite of you. I’ve read TGB 3 times though so far and plan for at least 1 more before thorn of emberlain comes out. For mistborn, I’ve gotten to about 80% through the 3rd book of the first trilogy before I got bored and quit. Fast forward a year and a half after reading the other cosmere books, I decided to reread mistborn... I’m about a third of the way through book 3 again and find myself having to force myself to pick it up. Now, some caveats (sorry if spoiler). I did initially struggle with book 2 of TGB in the training to head to the ghostwind isles and the following journey, but I wanted so bad to continue their story that I powered through it and feel rewarded for my efforts. I didn’t, and honestly still don’t, have those feelings for the third book of mistborn to the point where I didn’t mind first trilogy mistborn spoilers when looking at cosmere theories across the Internet. Like, I already have a general understanding of what happens at the end of that trilogy. The first to books were great to me. The 3rd just kind of dragged to me to the point where I didn’t care for the spectacular ending that I assumed (correctly) that Sanderson was building towards. I’ll get there eventually, I’m sure, just not feeling captivated to finish it like I had with TGB.

I read both series for the first time last year and I was progressively less impressed in each book of Gentleman Bastard to the point where I really don't understand why its so well respected. Maybe its that I truly enjoy con-man/heist stories and I felt that GB was...not particularly good at those? At this point, I honestly can't remember a single thing about any of the cons in the book and considering my memory for narrative minutiae, that's saying something.
@victoriannecastle

I don't even know why they should be compared. It's different. Mistborn has magic system and I will go with Mistborn any other day. . They have more originality and tension. Mistborn is the best. Gentlemen Bastards has a great book 1 but decline as the series goes. Book 3s opera/play and flashbacks are a filler. They don't add to the present day. Sabetha is annoying and has nothing on Vin.
@maedre9330

I just disagree on several points. I bought Scott Lynch's book The Lies of Lo me Lakota two years ago. After reading the first point where he was sold to the blind priest I put it down and have not returned to it. The language is Filthy and far too offensive and while I was intrigued by the glass in the setting, I could not abuse myself any longer with the story. Mistaken was a fun, engaging read by comparison. Call me old fashioned as I am 20 years your senior, but swearing doesn't equal good writing to me.

Derwood Cauthon well you have to realize that this is a fantasy book. Back in the medieval times, their mouths were dirty. I’m 13 and love this series although I don’t cuss. It sets the tone for a dirty world so I believe the cussing is necessary.
