This is great content. You are not the only person to run into problems interpreting the documentation. While I appreciate the hard work the MiSTer devs put in, the quality of the documentation is mediocre. Simple tasks such as outputting YPbPr to a consumer set becomes strangely challenging.

Thanks so much for this. I use the Ironclad Plus as my IO board and I was having the same problem that you were. That board has jumper pins instead of a switch to change the SOG setting, drove me nuts messing with the .ini file until I found your video.

Hey there, just curious to see what your resolution to this issue was, and how you managed to change the SOG setting on the board. I’ve got an Ironclad Plus as well, and the SOG pin situation is confusing me. Do they need to be connected with some kind of jumper cap? I wish it were just a switch to toggle on and off like most others seem to have 😵‍💫
@JuanjoNarive
@JuanjoNarive 8 месяцев назад
@@connorweaver5278 Yes, jumper caps do exist, you can also bend the pins, or jump them with a wire. Also, as I understand, the SoG settings in the INI file using recent MiSTer hardware, overrides the physical switch.

Finally got myself an excellent Sony Trinitron made in 2005, but the component input states 480i only in the manual, not sure if it will accept 240p or if I'll have to find a way to connect this thing via s-video or composite. I haven't gotten my Mister kit yet, just looking at the costs involved right now, currently have a genesis and snes hooked up to the CRT with everdrives and it's so awesome to see these pixels on a crt again.
@LameGaming
@LameGaming 2 года назад
It should handle 240p, The 480i only mention is probably to denote its not 480p capable.

I know this is an old video but im pretty sure you had the sync on green off in the first place and you actually turned it on. The position its in in your first picture is labled "off" on my case
@LameGaming
@LameGaming 2 года назад
Yeah they did it funky. Instead of sync on green on or off its sync on green over-ride on or off so over-ride on is actually turning it off or something 🤣 Kinda confusing... Or it was for my dumbass apparently 🤣 Im just running rgb now and on my component sets I have hooked up down the line i slapped in rgb to ypbpr transcoders I had lying around

Did your TV support 480p? I have a JVC AV-32WF47 that only supports 480i and I cannot get it working. Weirdly enough I can get that scrambled signal you had only when I leave ypbpr "off" in the settings. With it on, I get nothing. I've toggled the SOG switch, tried every relevant ini setting, and even tried every combination of plugging in the monoprice cable in case it was built wrong. Also, I confirmed component works on my CRT by hooking up an old DVD player with component. So either mister does not support some 480i CRT's, or my IO board is malfunctioning or I don't know what. I did hook up my Mister to component on a flat screen with the monoprice cable and it worked. As you can tell, I am at my wits end trying to figure this out.
@LameGaming
@LameGaming 2 года назад
Nope... None of my consumer crt's support 480p. When was the last time you updated mister? I wonder if your ini is corrupted somehow or maybe a setting is off. Ive noticed since last update the genesis core wont sync on my 36" jvc crt. I havent tried it on any other crts yet. I might be wrong but almost remember reading before about someone having issues with a jvc iart. Have you asked on mister forum, r/crtgaming, or r/fpgagaming ?
@william18miller
@william18miller 2 года назад
@@LameGamingi updated it before trying anything. no, I haven't been on the forums. I went to a friend's house who has a large Sony trinatron and it fired right up using your method in this video. literally on the first try after spending hours on the JVC messing with ini settings! so, I am on the hunt for a different CRT. the mister does not play well with the jvc and honestly that tv doesn't look great when it's working anyway

@@william18miller yeah, could be those i'arts are picky with signals. Might be something in the service menu that would solve the issue but i dont have one of these i'arts to test

@@LameGaming luckily I have original remote and was able to look up button combo to get into the service menu. I tried every setting I could and got nowhere as well. literally spent over 30 min in there. I agree that the jvc iarts are not the best for MiSter.. just a lot of frustration

What Toshiba CRT is that? I have a larger Toshiba as my smallest YPbPr component-capable CRT for the test bench but I really need a smaller one like that.

Its a 14AFxx series. Pretty nice little CRT for the size with component. Found this one for $10 on marketplace right around the beginning of the Rona scare. She said it was used in the kitchen about a year then was put up in a box. Was pretty mint with remote. I left the 10 in her mailbox and grabbed it off her porch lol.

@@LameGaming Thanks! I’ll keep a look out for one. I did notice a weird audio issue when testing NESRGB+HD Retrovision on the larger one I have and I’m curious if you’ve heard anything like it on this one: When you reach a castle at the end of a world in Super Mario Bros 3 and speak to Toad, it plays a high-pitched jingle that you hear again right after the fanfare from retrieving a Magic Wand. The audio levels start to go nuts here with volume going up and down like it is confusing some audio leveling/normalization circuitry. While the TV does have such features I confirmed that they are all turned off. This is repeatable! It doesn’t bother me too much since I don’t notice it in most games but I’m still curious to know if you happened to notice anything similar with yours. Thanks!

@@emmettturner9452 So you think its something specific with the Toshiba set or the nesrgb? I haven't played much of anything on the toshiba other than my supergrafx with an everdrive. I could try Mario 3 with mister or with my nesrgb and retrovision cables if I get a chance

@@LameGaming I think the TV is still processing the sound somehow even though I have all that disabled. My 12” composite-only Trinitron doesn’t do it. It could be capacitors or something.

@@LameGaming Dude. You’re not going to believe this but I totally just found a Toshiba 14AF45 at Goodwill for $4.99. I would’ve bought that in a heartbeat either way! No remote but I already have one plus my OSSC remote is programmed for it. My portable LCD remote also seems to power on/off Toshiba displays but can’t change input which requires the remote. This one is going on the test cart immediately!

SOG refers to RGB. Component green refers to Y or brightness.
@LameGaming
@LameGaming 3 года назад
I knew Y was Luma and that Component syncs on Luma (or green) so assumed sync on green was a specific YPbPr/ component setting, But your right... I guess sync on green is a flavor of RGB sometimes called RGsB. But still, why does EVERY single document ive read or video ive seen, talking about getting component out of your mister - they specify the switch needs to be set to SOG?
@ShamanNoodles
@ShamanNoodles Год назад
@@LameGaming For what it's worth, i couldn't get my mister to correctly output RGsB even with the SOG switch. And you are right, even in the Mister settings THEMSELVES, it says you should have the SOG switched on for *Component* video. Also, Component video *is* sync on green. And to add to that, Y is luma, not brightness.

You should on most TV's also be able to screw on som potentiometers inside the TV to tune the TV. I had to adjust the focus and position on mine. But be careful when doing this, it's actually dangerous if you mess up and touch things you shouldn't. Be sure to watch some videos, of what to think about, before trying.
@LameGaming
@LameGaming 3 года назад
@@dustinspencer9278 I just recently spotted a 27" D series on marketplace... I've always wanted to try one out since they seem to be regarded as good sets ..right up there with trinitrons. I'd definitely be looking to get a replacement remote on eBay but I know the JVC D series are pretty rare today so the remotes are even rarer. If I remember correctly the note 2 had an ir blaster app that could be used as a remote on TVs. I think I got into my Sony fs120 service menu with it years ago when I misplaced the remote... Those phones are probably dirt cheap now and might be something to look into.

You’d only want to do that with the display. You wouldn’t want to do that with the MiSTer’s analog output because it would be downscaling the lines and losing resolution all while defeating the purpose of replicating the original analog output.
