Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is done with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, giving us 99% of a fully functioning Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA. Let's talk about what happened now that the MiSTer FPGA N64 core is in Update_All!
This is a MiSTer FPGA how to guide for N64! Controller edition! MiSTer Addons Reflex Adapt as well as SNAC controller adapters and other ways to control your MiSTer FPGA N64 Core

The impossible Nintendo 64 FPGA core just got updated again on MiSTer FPGA! With huge improvements to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core bringing new life to so many best retro games! We now have LOD or level of detail which is another N64 hardware feature added to the MiSTer FPGA N64 core! N64 FPGA fun incoming! and now we have YUV support too so we have a FEATURE COMPLETE N64 FPGA core! and now Bangai-O has been fixed and is playable!
and here comes the big tests! Is MiSTer FPGA as good as real hardware for N64?
and now we have a MiSTer FPGA N64 Turbo core! That runs many games faster and better than a stock Nintendo 64!
The MiSTer N64 FPGA core was just updated and now TLB on N64 in FPGA is complete! A huge milestone for the Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA core is here!
It's a huge day for MiSTer FPGA and N64 fans...because every single retail game ever released for the Nintendo 64 now boots on MiSTer FPGA! FPGA gaming is huge for retro gaming fans and today marks the 100% of MiSTer FPGA N64 games booting! Banjo Tooie came in...at least place!
This is in addition to the N64 FPGA cor, bringing Killer Instinct Gold, Mario Golf, Twisted Edge Snowboarding, Super Mario 64 and Turok 2 to MiSTer FPGA for the first time! (ok just ONE part of Super Mario 64)
and now Paper Mario, Castlevania 64, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Bomberman 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and more!

I asked, you answered...and I try to listen :) Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness.
On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent happenings in the MiSTer FPGA scene in regards to the potential of a Nintendo 64 core for MiSTer FPGA! Nobody saw it coming...and it was long considered an "impossible core" but perhaps Nintendo's first 3D console might be coming to MiSTer soon! Which would be amazing as there are a ton of great games for it and software emulation, while much improved, is still a bit hit or miss. Plus modding a N64 for HDMI out is expensive and VERY difficult!
N64 on MiSTer FPGA would be a huge moment for video game history and preservation too!
The N64 core RSP work seems to be getting buttoned up...so next comes the RDP or Reality Display Processor which is in progress and it now has perspective correction built in! . Which means we can now "play" Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Wave Race 64, even The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask...and some other items! and most of the corrupted graphics have been solved by this point in time! Plus F-Zero and Pokemon Snap now too! and Cubivore! And Animal Crossing...and 007 (no not GoldeEye yet) plus Pokemon Stadium! And Harvest Moon 64, and Extreme G and Glover 64...plus some beta Ocarina of Time!
But after the PS1 core on MiSTer (developed by Robert as well) and the PSX 2X core…nobody should doubt his talents!
and when it comes out just play Bomberman Hero, the N64 hidden gem of choice around this channel!

The Brawler64 also makes a solid Sega Genesis/32X/CD/Saturn controller. The six face buttons and bumpers work great for that layout. Obviously there are better options, but if you want to minimize the number of controllers you have, it can handle a handful of cores very well.

It's been a little while since I've looked and I couldn't find one at the time, but what I'd really like to see is a USB (or N64, but for my purposes and simplicity USB would be better) controller in the style of the original N64 controller but with an accurate (that passes all the sensitivity tests) and more robust design on the analogue stick (maybe even a hall effect sensor). Because of the games I played back then, I never had an issue with the original N64 controller layout and it provided a unique gaming experience. What I loathed though was the analogue stick. I remember before knowing how it was designed getting this feeling that I was damaging it just by using it, and it turns out I was exactly right! I hated that feeling of the stick becoming gradually worse as the days and weeks rolled by. It happens gradually enough that it becomes this slowly building, subconscious sense of dissatisfaction until you reach a threshold where it becomes frustrating. Then you lay your hands on a new controller and realise how badly your old controller has been affecting your enjoyment. I think it stems from my time on Amiga and getting through joysticks what seemed like every other month, but I have a deep hatred of poorly built controllers. They normally hinder your enjoyment long before they actually fail. In the case of Amiga joysticks, it was stuff like missed diagonals (which really messes you up when you consider up was jump in many games) and in the case of N64 it was the stick not registering the full range or inability to be precise because the resistance of the stick isn't uniform. I'm very much willing to pay for a more expensive controller if it's going to last and perform well. Cheap controllers are one of the best examples of false economy.
@VideoGameEsoterica

Yes that’s why I prefer the brawler 64. A normal style analog stick Vs the little joystick style analog
@napalmhardcore

@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah, I've heard the stick is good on that (and that it does well in terms of sensitivity/range). I'd just like it if they or someone else released a controller in the style of the original but with a decent stick.

I bought an NSO 64 controller but afterwards I saw a few of MiSTeraddons' controller latency test posts on twitter and noticed one of the controllers he recommended is the Saffron N64 Wireless controller. He said the NSO controller has a high build quality but it has a potentiometer-based joystick which isn't as accurate. The adapters you showcased are probably better if you are going to play a lot of multiplayer games with others (How N64 should be enjoyed IMHO!)

I use the Retro Fighters controller. I was having trouble with the inputs and thought I had to mess around with some settings. Turns out I had to remap the inputs on both the MiSTer home menu and the 64 core. An issue I have, though, is with the analog stick. For some reason, it doesn't come back to the center quickly enough, so Mario doesn't abruptly stop but turns around and slows down before stopping. I don't know if it is faulty or got some debris in it or maybe just not calibrated correctly (Or then again, maybe that is how the Mario game was programmed, and I just don't remember, lol)

If you've got an N64 controller that's broken or on its last legs, I've been having a lot of luck with the 8bitdo N64 controller mod kit. It was a bit tricky to figure out how to get it to work at first. When you do the controller setup for it, you need to skip the first DPad test at the beginning, do the test for the left stick normally, and then use the C buttons for the right stick test. I have no idea why it's like that, but it's been an amazing solution ever since.

Obviously there’s going to be a bit of latency, but the one I use the most is a knockoff Bluetooth switch controller for $14. It performs well enough, and it’s actually a fairly comfy controller. I don’t know how to measure it, but it feels like they’re at least using the low latency mode for Bluetooth. I just use the right analog stick as the C buttons. It’s a bit weird, but I get used to it. I managed to complete Ocarina of Time using it, and it actually works *better* for Robotron 64.

I've just been using the NSO controllers. I know they have a lot of lag, but I honestly don't notice it personally, and most N64 games run at such low frame rates, that noticing it with most games isn't exactly likely anyway.

Huh? I always used N64 controller ports as an example of how USB-A SHOULD have been designed since you can’t have the same problem. I was literally pointing to N64 controllers and saying that was how USB should have been designed so that you would always get the orientation correct.

@@VideoGameEsoterica The plug is contoured for your thumb so you always know which way is up. Of course, some of those adapters have the ports in different orientations but the bottom (away from your thumb) still goes to the flat side. :)

8bitdo N64 DIY rumble works (over Bluetooth) the controllers have to be put in "S" mode. Side note, this also treats the C buttons as individual buttons rather than an analogue control stick (this happens in "D" mode)

I think it's because, in those days you weren't supposed to move the camera that much. It was expected that the game would take care of the camera for the most part, with only an occasional adjustment, if you need it at all. It's not like today, where when I play something like Assassin's Creed, I'm constantly repositioning the camera even if I'm not using it to aim at something. Gamers were just not used to using a right stick back then. It was considered so unnecessary that Sega didn't even bother with a right stick on the Dreamcast controller in 1999. Also, fighting games were still popular at the time, and I think Nintendo wanted a controller like the Saturn pad that could handle Street Fighter and other Capcom fighters without shoulder buttons. Of course, they didn't get those games, but I guess the Mortal Kombats benefited from it.
