and new we have an update to MiSTer FPGA cores with a new update from Srg320 and the MiSTer FPGA SNES core, giving us extra ram to play Super Mario Bros Maker from Infidelity, Satellaview games (look up a best Satellaview games list) as well as fixed to the last few games on the core that had issues! Best emulator console around...even if its not emulation! Satellaview stuff was updated and made to work better from a previous version and .bs files

Save states have been on the FX Pak Pro for a while. They are a big buggy for sure. I dont blame them for wanting to test this for a bit before putting on Update All.

Tenured kaizo player here. I really hope we see rewind support in the future, but this is a nice step forward. It's hard to line up a useful save state on the advanced kaizo hacks, but I usually bind rewind to select in RetroArch and it works great for for practicing tough segments. I just got my first MiSTer recently and was blown away. That little dev board spits out the most beautiful analog signal on a PVM or quality CRT computer monitor 🤯 I'll be ok if we never see rewind on the SNES core, but one can hope.

@@VideoGameEsoterica honestly feel the same. It's easy to compare oneself with the top tier players, but as long as you're having fun that is all that counts. I'm about three years in and still having a blast! What are some of your favorite kaizo SMW ROM hacks?

I just played one. Crap what’s the title. It had Waluigi in it and you start off in a chase section after puzzle solving out of the first area. My brain is toasted today I can’t remember.

@@VideoGameEsoterica not sure if you have ever heard of the quickieworld series by Valdio. I definitely recommend them if you are a newer player. There are probably better hacks these days like 2learn2kaizo (, hopefully I got the title right) for platforming and some shell/cape fundamentals. Followed by shelltopia as a good entry point for shell hacks.

I love the fact that we now have savestates for SNES, I play more SNES games on my RPi 5 just because MiSTer never supported it. It's the one thing I've always liked about emulation.

The most recent SNES core broke a few of the popular romhacks, so it’s better they take their time I think. I had to roll back to the prior core to continue my SMW FastROM run.

@DaveFallows it’s a core in conjunction with the main so you should always keep the prev core. Unless you mean the Mario Maker core? Can’t tell

4:50 to do this by injecting software was likely the only way it could be done on de10nano, savestates are expensive logicwise. for psx it took 25% of LUs, more than the cpu+gpu combined afaik. robert (having implemented savestates in all the other cores too) also said "i wouldn't try it on any core that is above 65-70% logic usage already" and snes is big, 75%+

Doesn’t this mean analogue pocket is next? The dev recently cited FPGA Mister missing snes save states as the reason he will likely never port it over to the analogue pocket.

I know a few years ago there was talk about an IGS PGM core being in the works for the Mister. Did anything ever come of that? I don't remember hearing anything about whether or not it was possible. It may have just been put on the backburner, but I don't remember hearing anything for a while.

old tech, we did this in 1994 with a Super Wildcard DX. same idea, intercept IRQ, run SNES code to dump ram, registers, and vram. I did this in 2000 with a Gameboy.. works very well for most games.

I can't play a lot of RPG's these days without fast forward. Like Pokemon and Final Fantasy. I just don't have dozens of hours to spend on grinding in my adulthood.

This is great, I already have an SD2SNES but since you show Star Fox, I assume MiSTer save states work with special chip games, unlike SD2SNES save states? If so, I'll definitely be making use of this to practice SA-1 hacks of shmups like Gradius III (and then try to 1CC them without save states)

I played Smash TV, save state works while you are in the game. Exit and play another game then came back to Smash TV, tried to restore and it does nothing. Is that supposed to happen? I thought it would be good for saving high scores

Anyone else having issues with the QMTech board and this? All states go crazy when attmepting a save. I'm guessing it could be a RAM issue/due to the onboard RAM.

I must confess that while save states are indeed a glorious thing frankly given how our conditioning from newer to older games is very different now, save states do I feel ruin the intended feel. The argument is always that we don't have to use them but my argument is that while that's true, the fact you knowingly can destroys how the original experience then becomes. It becomes just part of the game in that you can simply use it if you want like you can a smart bomb because it's part of the system. Yes you still don't have to use it but it's there to use in exactly the same way as everything else so it does ruin the intended experience Another way to put it would be to say if you were in a situation that was dire say in regards to your life but then you remember you can activate the option to pause time. You're going to use that. Similarly in a game where the potential for tension from the game design itself is robbed of this original aspect because you know you only have to quick save your way out of danger The best option for this issue is not simply to say not to use it of course but design the save state system with the option to be tailored so that you can define if you want to use it before booting into a game. An option at least to do this being available to those that want specifically to remove this as part of the original system which never had this to begin with. And again it's not because save states are a bad thing at all but they've never been incorporated well Another example would be that while in the arcades back then instead of the usual limit you perhaps had that day, you instead had infinite money with which to spend. The point of these games would be destroyed as you simply pumped your infinite coins into each game with no risk of dying and most certainly always finishing the game artificially. An entirely different an unfulfilling experience because the thrill of getting further would not hinge on any sense of tension for losing lives Anyway I just feel it's something that doesn't get talked about enough because the truth is while preserving games through emulation is incredible, strangely emulators don't actually allow for truly authentic conditions because the implementation of save state system hasn't even taken them into account The one really good thing I found with fpga is that they don't tend to have save states so it's almost an entirely authentic experience. Again though it's not that they're a bad thing but there's a lack of respect given in the impact of their inclusion and it would take so little to fix this The good thing though at least in this case and at this point in time is you don't have to set up the folder for this to work at least. And lastly, I absolutely see the benefit to save states and their inclusion as important but a little more thought into how they can exist so that both sides benefit is surely where we should be by now. Sensible tailoring options applied and saved in config for anyone that wants them

I’m curious if that would be possible without anamorphic stretching, the way resolution works with Mister is kinda weird. For example, the Vectrex and Game & Watch cores have a framebuffer resolution of ≤480p because of some obscure limitations. The Mister can scale low resolutions to output to 1440p but the way it handles vector/vectorized graphics is pretty poor compared to software solutions IMO.

I don't know if this is an attitude among the core developers or if it's just plain ol' hard to implement but among the FPGA community there is this weird anti-save state mentality I wish would go away. Driven completely by weird elitism surrounded by purity weirdness that makes no sense. If you at all cared about purity you would only be playing on OG hardware and not what amounts to fancier better emulation. Every core should have this. Especially with Nintendo looking to abuse the absolutely broken US courts to get emulation banned entirely. FPGA is safe from that nonsense (for now) and might be the future. Every core should have as many bonus features as possible. Strive to be better than OG hardware. Rant over ;p

I don't think that's the case at all. Lots of cores already have save states. NES, GBA, GB, PSX, and now SNES. Which are some of the top systems on the MiSTer platform. It's more that save states aren't always easy to implement in an FPGA core, and lots of other cores were built without them and going back to add save states is not easy either. I don't think it has to do with people being "Anti save state".

I’m overall anti save state. The reason is pretty simple: I don’t like dealing with the temptation to abuse them. Now I’m not gonna gripe and complain about it being implemented, there are a bunch of good aspects, especially for people who don’t have a lot of time to play. But in the same way I’m not a fan of casinos or alcohol ads, I think they encourage bad habits. save states encourage people to play these games in a way that changes the experience away from what the game designers intended. The lack of snes save states is actually one of the major factors that led to me really enjoying RPGs on the mister, battles that come down to the wire just don’t have the same heart pounding drama when you are using save states. And yes, if you have the will power to avoid abusing them then this criticism doesn’t hold up, but many people don’t.
