I remember my father... we are from Ecuador. S.A. But he loved the American music from the Second WW. American Band and Jazz. He had an incredible set of long plays. Those big old ones. I love them, they are like good old books! Old churches and libraries! Have a special flavor...inside of your chest!
I was just having a craving to hear this song. Beautifully played, like a frosty cup of ice cream with condensation on the sides on a warm summer evening.
Matthew... Jim Matthews here in the states. I have never reached out to you to tell you how much I enjoy your music. I have been following you since 2013. You have been an inspiration to me as a newby sax player. Today,,, your you tub vids are featured on my pc at my The UPS Store in Gulf Breeze Fl..... Thanks for the music man... All the best to you... JIm in the USA
This song was the first I tried to play when I had my first sax. It's a wonderful tune! Your interpretation is simply great. Of course, everyone can do better someday - but (as you say) you are very hard on yourself. Your recording is intense, the tone simply wonderful, the vibrato tastefully applied, the solo ideas absolutely convincing... so it's almost perfect. What I also like is the visual impression the video gives of you thinking about the playing and the tune. Great job!!
Matthews, I like all your recordings, like your repertoire and style, are sources of inspiration for me. This recording is very different from the other version of Misty you recorded in 2009 when the acquisition of its Reference and sure this version is prettier. Let's see in a year how will this new version of Misty. Congratulations!
How do you get such a romantic soft sound?? I’m so jealous it’s beautiful! I enjoy listening to your playing very much. Hope to hear more vigors from you like this one!
Matthew, I've seen all your videos, Misty is my favorite, in both versions. I would like to hear a good version of "all the way" I hope that one day include in your repertoire.
One of my favorite tunes, sounds wonderful! Quick question, could you do a video tour of your recording room and show your recording equipment? I can never get my recordings to sound nearly as good as yours.
Hi Matthew, a great job, but I still like your 2009 rendition the best ! Keep them both on for others to compare....I really like your style and tone control...
Matthew, I really enjoy all of your songs and your style of playing, especially your ballads. Thank you for sharing your talent. What type of tenor are you playing?
He mentioned them in his blog: matthewstonesax.blogspot.com Selmer Reference 36 with a standard (not vintage) Otto Link Hard Rubber Tone Edge 7 or more recently 7* opening with a Vandoren Masters Ligature and Rico Jazz Select 3M reeds.
Shaidyn it’s “mainstream’ jazz from the 50’s. try Stan Getz, Zoot sims... or more modern players like Scott Hamilton. Lots of crossover with other styles, but if it’s slow ballads you like try Art Pepper too on alto
Takes me back to my youth... Getz was the man. I see you have 'cover' on some of your videos. I would like very much to use two in a nostalgic video of my life. I am not into the new sounds and they would not fit the mood. I will credit your music on the soundtrack...
Although this is very good, I like your tone much better from the Jan 09 version. Did you change your horn, mouthpiece or reed? The older version sounds smoother, more rounded and breathy to me.
Hi Matt. I'm a long time fan... I'm in the process of creating my own RU-vid recordings.. I get the microphone setup and connecting to my audio interface.. What I'm trying to figure out how to record the backing with my play over.. if you're using a DAW how do you get your backing to output to your video? I hope my question makes sense. Thanks
Delicioso como siempre, como cada pieza interpretada x ti, me encanta ese toque tan erotico, tan sensual que le agregas a cada nota, es un placer escuchar esto!!!
Hi Matthew, I have been learning to play Dexter Gordon's rendition of Misty as he played it , verbatim, at the Village Vanguard in 1964. I have almost half of it down to memory. I cannot find the transcription to it anywhere so I guess the best thing to do is to transcribe it myself! Was wondering if your could tell me where you obtained the piece your playing here or can you share it?.. Thank you. Patrick
Your best bet would probably turning to The Real Book, distributed by Hal Leonard; it's full of great jazz standards. They also have a complete play-along collection if you want a backing track to practice with. I would recommend improvising on your own, instead of following Dexter Gordon's recording. You can always adapt the style of your favorite players, though. Cheers!
So all you hear in this is imperfections... hmm maybe what you call imperfections is exactly what we all love in your playing? So please don't become perfect! :-)
I heard that you used to be? Still are? a guitar player. What was that transition like for you learning to play sax? Any tips for a fellow guitar player?
