I awoke so cold and lonely In a faraway place The sun fell cold upon my face The cracks in the ceiling spelt hell Turned to the wall Pulled the sheets around my head Tried to sleep, and dream my way Back to you again best lines ever. besides, any song with a hurdy gurdy is alright in my book.
This song is one of my favourites from the Pogues, its a perfect blend of Jem Finers lyrics and Shanes voice. Like so many of the Pogues songs it really makes you feel like you become part of the piece, what other band can write songs that almost every person can relate to a usually moving or somehow changing life experience? In 100 years people in Ireland will still be singing Shanes music, what other artist, including Bono could you say that about?
We have statues of all our Great Poets, my opinion is Shane was one of the best, he not only wrote great Poetry, he gave it an extra magical touch, he made it so the whole world would hear it by modernizing it for the all consuming world, the man was not just a great poet but a genius. ❤
"I held a match to your cigarette and watched the smoke curl in the mist" Spider actually wrote this song which goes to show they're all terrific song writers. LOVE THE POGUES!
I awoke alone and lonely In a faraway place The sun fell cold upon my face The cracks in the ceiling spelt hell Turned to the wall Pulled the sheets around my head Tried to sleep, and dream my way Back to you again BEST LINES EVER. even competing with dylan. shanes more poetic, dylan is an outright better storyteller.
I like your comment, because Dylan is a good storyteller, but I have to disagree. There are only a few better lyricists than Bob Dylan, but there are exactly zero better than Shane.
London’s bridges are something else. So many and each one distinctive. Spent a lot of time when I first arrived in London trying to learn the names of all the bridges. Because once you could see them in your head, it was so much easier to get around London and to find your way. The underground makes the city indecipherable. Only when I got a bike and started to cycle there did the place stop feeling alien. Remember my heart always lifting heading south over Blackfriars Bridge where SOUTH LONDON is written on the road. When I saw that I knew I wasn’t that far from home. And unlike Belfast, Dublin, Glasgow or Liverpool, the other cities I’ve lived in, London is everyone’s city. Everyone is at home because no one is at home really. But there’s no sense of people (Glaswegians the worst) making you feel you shouldn’t be there. That they’re not your streets too. And you can walk in the steps of so many who went before. And every corner has a million stories to tell.
Always been one of my favorite pogues songs. beautiful songwriting by shane. the music and the melody are also amazing. hugely underrated song. magic. 'your eyes blue like the ocean between us'
I've an oul' uncle over in London, he's f****ed now, in an 'oul flat, no chance of comin' home really. Drink an' all. Every time I hear this song I think of him - for he was a great man in his day. He's still a hero to me.
You have to hand it to him though, being that wasted and writing some of the greatest lyrics of all time. But you have to give credit to the rest of the band too, some of the best musicians in the business. Musical perfection I think
shame really, he's had most of them smashed out whilst drunk. I think shane is awesome. The embodiment of the anti-rock star. I.e. you don't have to look perfect all the time.
I dreamt we were standing By the banks of the Thames Where the cold grey waters ripple In the misty morning light Held a match to your cigarette Watched the smoke curl in the mist Your eyes, blue as the ocean between us Smiling at me
I remembered when I was in London back in 2005. It was in May but it was so bloody cold. Me and my brother was walking around late at night. We were walking over the beautiful Albert Bridge. We were freezing like shit. We thought of this song. We could shange the lyrics to: "Freezing Morning Albert Bridge"... London is a beautiful town...
Great song tho I could have lived out my years without ever knowing that Shane had a mustache at one point and been just fine, haha. Seriously, what a musical genius -- the timbre of his voice unequaled and unmistakable
I love this song and I am pretty sure it was written for me but... Shane is sooo sketchy at 1:10. Just casually walks into Jem's room and sings to him.
I heard this song once on a tv show a few years back- heard it in the background and had to find out who sang it. I'm not sure how, but I did, and thank goodness for that. It's been a favorite ever since.
Haha I love 1:05. It's so easy to imagine a drunken Shane stumbling into somebody's bedroom singing, not having any idea where he is. But seriously, dear God they were good.
this song makes me sad, i always thought shane wrote it though. seems like he didn't write at least 2 of my favourites (thousands are sailing being another)
Shane gave me a can of lager once when they played St Austell Colliseum in Cornwall. I was so happy in my pissed state I banged it on the stage and it exploded all over Kate O'Riorden. One of the best bands ever and they wouldn't win x factor.
Hey Fritz ! Yesterday, my ebay package arrived ! I bought The Great Hunger DVD, life and songs of Shane MacGowan. They talked about the Nips. I may extract some scenes and post it here !
