You're absolutely right... I only realised my mistake after I stuck the fence down and it wouldn't come off... face-palm.

The fence needs to be square, but they don't need to be exactly 45 degrees from the blade, since you're cutting a piece on each side of the blade.. So your mitre will be square, even if the joint itself isn't exactly 45 degrees.

Yep for rectangular frames, but it's all a bit tricky to set up. Will explain in the next video.
