people don’t realize that mitski is quite possibly one of the best female artists of our time. like i’d say greatest artists in general tbh. her lyrics are hard hitting and stunning and she just knows exactly what to write. her songs are so personal

I think the studio version is absolutely sublime, but as others have said before me, I don't know how she sang this without getting emotional, because I can't listen to this particular rendition without crying. The simplicity of it really brings the sadness of the song to light.

I think the most heart wrenching part of this song is the first line in transition to the chorus “In the rear view mirror, I saw the setting sun on your neck And felt the taste of you bubble up inside me” it’s like the feeling of seeing that person and just being captivated in awe of them.. staring in depth with the feeling of desire building inside of you. The anxiety, a good and bad kind of adrenaline, rushing through you just at the thoughts of their presence, how you present around them, and just being with them. Then “but with everybody watching us, our every move, we do have reputations”. So badly you just want to blurt out the words “I am so in love with you” to them and with its reasoning.. yet in the circumstances you find it impossible they would even remotely reciprocate the feeling back. Maybe because you think you’re out of their league or maybe because they haven’t shown any sort of hint that they feel the same So the transition “come inside and be with be, alone with me, alone with me, alone If you would let me give you pinky promise kisses Then I wouldn’t have to scream your name on top of ever roof in the city of my heart” “If I could see you, once more to see you..” it’s like you fantasize giving them every ounce of affection and love they deserve, and them reciprocating the irrational passionate feelings you have for them. But they likely don’t. So you can’t say the very strong words “I love you”, the setting Sun highlighting their neck will have to do it for you, while the feelings you resist only get louder and louder and harder for you to ignore That’s how I interpret it :)

people wouldn't understand this woman's melancholy

This song reminds me of my first gay relationship, I liked her more than she liked me and I was scared to fully express my feelings scared to kiss her because of all the homophobia she was in a very religious family that hated me. “but with everybody watching us, our every move, we do have reputations, we keep it secret won’t let them have it” so many people have to hide their sexuality and relationships to save their reputation.

sitting on my roof and listening to this. it's a bit chilly, but i don't mind. i like being up here, just watching the cars pass by as mitski sings. it's beautiful. for once in a while, i feel calm. her music does this to me. edited 9/25/21: since this comment, mitski has blown up so much. i found her 2-4 years ago so seeing her this big now warms my heart. i love her music so much. i hope she is doing alright right now. Once more to see you is such an underrated one of mitski’s best songs, the lyrics, her voice’s elegance, it’s so majestic.

In the album version this songs feel like whispering your feelings, keeping it in your heart but this one it's like screaming what had been hidden for so long at the top of a roof so everyone can see it. While it also feels like begging for someone to stay but all calmly because you'd be happy just for seeing him. It also feels like hurting for a love you couldn't show at that time, as if telling "I love you" would be a cathasthrophic event. The more you keep it in your heart the more it hurts.
