The guys wring out the Evo X MR to wrap-up our discussion of the VW Golf R, its competition, and its place in the world. Then they debate which car is the best value and performance in this comparison.
I have an EVO X MR touring, basically the same as this car but without the navigation and I have to say I absolutely love it. The look, the power, the handling, it's all incredible. After driving this car, you'll never want to drive anything else. The EVO X is truly a work of art.
Yes, yes you can. Navigation package is separate from the sight and sound package which is the one that comes with the 710 watt Rockford Fosgate system.
How many miles does your car have? How is the realizability? I'm thinking about getting one for my wife . I just hate that the back seats don't come down.
Well, i actually got rid of my MR to get a GSR, which is the manual EVO X. My MR had about 50,000 on it, my new one isn't over 40,000 yet, it's a 2011. Yeah the reason the back seats don't come down is because the battery and windshield wiper fluid are in the trunk.
Hi guys, I live in new york and I owned a 07 bmw 328i until 3 weeks ago when I traded it in for a 2012 Mitsubishi evolution gsr. I had a lot of reliability problems with the bimmer and for 3 years straight I had problems getting around in the snow. I love the evo. Really! I love this car. People look at it when I drive and give me a thumbs up. When im parked it have people walk up to check it out. The car is a legend and we should treat its bloodline with respect. Dont knock a car until you drive one especially this evo X. Its not the fastest but over all its the most capable. When you are stuck in the snow in your expensive European cars, or sexy American v8s, I will be getting to work or returning home with a smile on my face. I also own a fully modified honda civic and the evo is great to have.
You don't need a sun roof, nor navigation, or rear cámara... But your wife does. That's why this car is perfect for me. I love the car. I don't need all that, but all those extra things make the difference when you are married with children. The woman likes the sun, the loud music. The space for 3 children... This car is perfect for the married man that needs performance, out of a family car.
Watched this video for 2 years on and off in love with the blue Evo. After a year of searching I purchased the exact car. 2011 MR Touring, octane blue. Thanks guys for the great review and the motivation.
We had 2 Mrs. Sold them for personal reasons and regret it big time!! Now we have 1 and 1 being shipped to us as I type this lol. Old: wicked white and phantom black New: octane blue pearl and rally red
We originally tested the GSR version of the Evo X. It's available on our channel and linked at the end of this piece as well. We hope you'll watch that one as well. Thanks!
This review is what prompted me to buy my EvoXMR Touring Edition and I happily pay ever month for it. So thanks guys for giving me that push to Just do it. And who knows... maybe this Nissan alliance will give the Evo that sense of Urgency to return to the streets.
I never get tired of watching these guys. They don't deviate too far from the other car review channels in terms of their comments, but the video editing that shows back and forth comments between the two reviewers in the same car is innovative. I find it more entertaining to listen to what sounds like a conversation than a monologue.
I don't understand why no one can get over the evo interior. Everyone knows its cheap but I don't care how full of plastic it is as long as you can still run circles around all the subaru fanboys.
We're glad you're a fan of what we do. It's clear you don't like the Evo, and we respect that. The guys do agree with you that this car is certainly not for everyone, and in spite of its performance it does require a lot of maintenance costs. We greatly appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and we're glad to have you as a viewer! Please share our show with others. Thanks again!
I got my mr two weeks ago and im in love, im about to finish breaking it in. Also I got my mr for 39k with a sunroof, leather seats, all that except the navigation which I don't need
Chris Cav yes especially when driving on traffic, I used it as a daily driver. When I want to speed I switch the mode from normal, to sport or to super sport than I switch it so where I can control the gear shifting. It is so worth it breaks a lot of necks as well lol that doesn't hurt
eli hernandez breaks who's necks? That car is an ugly POS. The only thing it looks decent for is the suspension/performance/brakes/transmission everything else is elantra class.
How you liking it so far? I own a 2012 mustang gt (auto) and am looking to get this (auto) for my wife. Do you know what your 1/4 mile times are by any chance? How is the reliability? How many miles does your car have?
Lol you can find a new evo mr for under 40k.. can they name a 4 door performance car with a Dual clutch that can do a 4.5 to 60? With a crazy smart AWD system that makes it great on tracks ? Brembo breaks and recaro seats? And that has a huge after market following ? They do much research about 53 we cars.. to much face value generalizations.
I am with these guys. How on earth with a vehicle such as this does mitsubishi produce what is the probably the worst line up on cars on the planet? Not any one of their other cars is even worth looking at for purchase. Every other car manufacturer produces something much better than any thing else mitsubishi produces, while all so costing so much less. And now that they have decided to can the evo, we can probably say good bye to mitsubishi here in the states. It sucks too, because I have such a soft spot in me for mitsubishi with their older cars. Like the galant vr4, and 3000gt. Those are such exciting cars, and would be a joy to own. And the evo has all ways been a dream car of mine...
Wait a minute, you have a soft spot for the Galant? Why? What am I missing here. I didn't know there was anything special about the Galant? Why is Mitsuibishi seemingly not even trying to produce a winning product? Strange
to make sales, these are road cars after all performance cars are just expensive and annoying to own, you really have to be a hoon to own one which most people are not. cheap affordable cars make a lot of money
I bought a 2014 Mirage back in May. It's definitely got a TON of potential for a sleeper, since it weighs under 2000 lbs and has a very low drag coefficient, so a little extra power can go a MUCH longer way. But holy hell, that suspension needs stiffening!
MrGovenator1 I couldn't agree more brotha..... Mitsubishi is making junk anymore....I have loved Mitsubishi since I was a teenager, my parents helped me get a loan on a brand new 98 eclipse gst
The first time I watch any everyday driver video. I always thought you guys were trying too hard to make your videos a hit. But after watch a few more videos, I realize y'all make sense. The videos you shoot are thought out and straight-forward. Thanks (good show)
Something to consider now since the car hasn't been built for 4 years. In North America, there was never more than 900 Evo X MR's released. Over 8 years, there was only just over 3000 shipped to North America. Some years 500, 2014 had 808 shipped. This puts every years of the X MR in the rare category which makes the car that much more desireable. People are still talking about, new videos are released every day about it. That says alot about the impact the Evo still has.
I have watched your reviews with Evos in them way too many times. Great reviews. I love your premise on this series, finding the place for the GTR. All nice cars, but i'm a Mitsu guy. I bought a 2013 Evo GSR in Wicked White a month ago. It's the best thing I've ever bought. Big thanks to the guys for all their work. I must agree with Todd about the Evo.....they are incredible.
Mitsubishi would sell more cars if they brought back the turbo v6 eclipse with a awd or rwd setup, instead of just canceling it or designing a new version of the 3000gt.
We're thrilled you like what we do, thank you! Any high-performance car will require a good amount of maintenance. Evo and STI are both pretty high-strung with owners on both sides debating reliability. But, the Evo is known to require regular service, goes through tires quickly, and can be expensive to insure. Owners putting lots of track time on their Evos can put a few grand a year into the car to keep it in top shape. So usage is a factor. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Exactly. I just bought a base 2014 GSR. I came from a mkv r32. While I did lose some features in the interior of my evo compared to the R32. Once you drive the Evo you don't really give a fuck about interior features. Its all about the driving experience. if People want a nice Luxurious Interior then don't buy an Evo. Its that simple
I'm at a loss idk if I should get the GSR or MR. I'm leaning a little toward the MR more since people say it's better in traffic. But idk, I'm definitely getting an evo though before I lose my chance at getting one since it's their last year of production. any suggestions?
If you are planning on upgrading and not breaking the bank (as much) then get the GSR. The MR is great for stop and go but the tranny can only handle so much power before you have to upgrade the internals. I have a 2015 MR and love it. No Recaros though...
+Josue Diaz 15 is the last EVO model. I bought my GSR a few months back. Don't regret it one bit. This video almost made me wish i had the MR but shifting is fun. I've never owned an auto anyway
I'm watching this 10 years too late. Like you said, none of us cared about anything else Mitsubishi made, the problem is nobody else cared, either, let alone caring about the evo. I LOVE my wrx but am not ashamed to admit that if they didn't cost twice as much I'd probably have an evo
Um? I don't understand. Beginning of the video, you stated that "it's low maintenance cost girlfriend." Toward the end, you said it's high maintenance cost... uh.......
The Low-Maintenance girlfriend comment is part of the opening where we're reviewing some of the things said about the WRX. At the end, we're discussing the maintenance of the EVO X. We hope that clarifies and thanks for Watching.
My Evo X MR, it s like a high maintenance girlfriend that whisper to your ear, while you re already corner like mad man, and tesaid: "go faster sweety...a lot faster"....arrgggg I love my Evo X :)
+Kern O'Leary The R puts down identical performance numbers to the new STI and has a far better quality to the interior. I don't know what tuned STI's and Evo X's run but the R with a tune will run low 12's in the 1/4 mile. Seems one of the main differences that the R has going for it vs the other's in the list is the understated looks. Nothing flashy about it, no wing or anything like that. It's very unassuming.
Love your work! Fair, entertaining, but always focused on delivering a fair review. Earned a subscriber! If possible, I hope you guys can do an article/video on how to properly research/buy a used car, since you guys also emphasize price and affordability for "everyday" drivers. I know a lot of viewers, including myself, would benefit :)
Great review guys. I've driven all three, owned previous versions of the Evo (IX) and Golf, and I still picked the WRX. Dark grey in sedan form. I got tired of the constant maintenance every two weeks on the Evo, and tires ate up money I could have used on aftermarket parts. The Golf (R32 and GTI) were very refined and I'd recommend them to anyone looking for a great car. I just wanted the WRX, knowing I could get to work every day, and capable of finding trouble if I wanted to.
I NEED an Evo, too! I hope the next gen is just as fun. And Mitsubishi : please inject some driving fun in more of your models! Great comparo, guys...love the channel!
Are u serious man lol? That Evo and Impresa its not the best of there rank, dont even try to compare a golf to those Legend cars, if u want a Evo or Impresa i can talk u about some... golf is a day to day car MOSTLY, and Evo and Impresa, are for that to and if u want u can do rally or go simply to circuits doing some curves like a boss... and they have awesome acceleration, and their speed is limited dont forget, and still they can hit 270km or more. They have their names written in history, cant say the same about golf. Now u sure like golfs u must be a fan for talking like that and i dont blame u.
Paulo Barbosa bro an evo is my dream car.... im just not lying to myself. an evo hasnt won a world rally event since 1999 with the evo 6 . you asked what its doing here .... i was answering you initial question. i think the question to you is how are these cars NOT comparable? i dont need to go and list the things in the video and NO im not saying a golf r is as good as an evo. its just a rediculous comment "what is that little vw doing here" when it has more power than any evo ever
We encourage you to watch the opening explanation... or the closing one, for that matter. As stated many times, this is not about the Evo vs. STI, but about finding where the Golf R fits.
In 2010 Mitsubishi released a small number of Evo X SEs (340 to be a act). It’s the car you guys were looking for. All of the go fast bits for the MR (SST transmission, Bilstein dampers, Eibach springs, aluminum roof) with none of the frills: no leather, no sun roof, no nav system/hard drive). It sold for about $36K - much cheaper than an MR. They were released to the dealers a couple of months before the 2011models, so by early 2011, the dealers would let them go fairly cheap. They are still out there. Extremely rare and under appreciated.
"This car thinks about what you're trying to do..." and back when I used it for 2 seasons of autocross, it guessed wrong *a lot*. Its happy place is a canyon road.
Thanks for sharing your experience here. Any car can be altered by aftermarket tuning, but it makes comparisons nearly impossible as the variables are always changing - so we review cars the way the Manufacturers offer them. We applaud you for driving all those cars yourself in your buying process. Ultimately, we want people to go out and form opinions about these cars from first hand experience. Bravo, and congrats on your Golf R. Thanks a lot for watching and sharing your thoughts!
We aren't debating your listing of prices or grouping of cars. However, as explained in the opening... VW themselves says the Golf R competes with the STI and Evo, but the cars capabilities clearly put it in the realm of the WRX and Ralliart. So, we brought a car from each of those groups to discuss if VW's placement was correct. We're sorry that you missed the explanation in the video.
i have owned an STi i have had a Golf R , ive driven alot of nice fast cars ..... but everytime i drive my evo x Mr the smile it gives me the car is just so good , it just feels so right
If you add $800 to the Golf R, you can get about 100 extra horses out of it, and then it could compete. Honestly, I'd just get a WRX though. Or a used Sti
We hope you noticed that the WRX we had was only a few thousand less than the Golf R, and the Evo MR can be found for 5-7k less than the model in this review. Many times the Press cars available tie our hands in regards to "as Tested" price. But in the end, the less expensive WRX came in ahead of the R, and Paul even picked it ahead of the Evo! We expect that will be helpful to many people. But you are welcome to disagree.
So I’m planning on buying an evo with these mods on it ETS intake,ETS upper inter cooler piping, Perrin 3.5 intercooler, MAP lower intercool piping, grim speed 3- port boost controller, ETS high flow cats, custom 3 inch resonated cat back,KW V3 coilovers, whiteline roll center kit. It’s a 2008 mr with 59k miles on it he’s asking 21k for it but i dropped it to 20k is this a good deal ? Will I have any issues with the car ? Do you guys think new to evos and don’t want to start off wrong anything helps!
We hope you noticed that Todd said he didn't need those things "on an EVO". He finds the upper package on the Evo (which adds about $5k - the sunroof etc.) brings unneeded extras to a car of this type. And any smartphone can take the place of most nav systems. The guys focus on the driving fun of a car, but we do connect our phones and try out the extras in everything we review. We appreciate your comment and hope you'll watch more of what we do.
You're right, VW aimed it at the bigger boys because of price - but they can't have everything. In many ways you are supporting our premise here... How can this be rigged in the Golf R's favor when it came in LAST against both its intended targets and those beneath it (the Standard WRX)? We hope you watched the entire piece and the conclusions... Meanwhile, over at the Golf R comments people are accusing us of scaring folks away from the Golf R! Either way, thanks for your thoughts.
I may be alone in this but I like my Evo's interior. The 2013+ model years received amaterials upgrade. It's not alcantara, but it's no longer hard plastics everywhere.
Good on you guys for not loosing it on idiot commenters and actually addressing them in a polite manner even though you don't have to. Love all the videos, keep it up guys.
We're glad you liked these reviews and appreciate the compliments. However, we're confused by your question - if you watched the piece you heard our explanation for why we paired these three cars together. The explanation is at the beginning of all 3 videos and discussed again at the end of this piece. As explained... This pairing was not to compare the Evo and WRX (they aren't competitors), but to place the Golf R in the marketplace. Thanks for watching and liking what we do!
Thanks for the review. I'm looking at the EVO now. Just used though. As was said, it is just too expensive at $45k. Hope to knock it down to 28ish used.
Another great, great review. Not only do you give great, well thought out opinions and answers, but you ask the right questions (eg. what is the R's place in the world of affordable drivers' cars?) I'm also a huge fan of German cars (Drive a 335i), and have owned GTi's, Audi's, various 3's, and even a 911 in the past, and I WANTED to be impressed by the R... but I have to agree with you guys... it needs to do more... or cost less. Are you listening, VW?
You're absolutely right, the EVO and STI are natural competitors. The explanation for this match-up is in the video description, in the opening of the video, and in the closing discussion... as well as many times here in the comments. Thanks for watching.
Fantastic review and video once again fellas! I own an 08' graphite gray (I think that is the paint name) Evo X, daily it everywhere and - LOVE IT. Gonna miss the High Octane Blue color, it isn't an option for the 2013 models.
First let me say I am a bit biased because I own and drive an 04 R32. That said I think the V-dub got a raw deal in this review. The whole premise is supposed to be about which one of these cars would make the best every day driver. My cousin owns an '11 WRX, and I have driven the EVO, I haven't driven the golf R so I can only go off what I know about my own car, but as an everyday driver I think the V-dub is the best choice. Think about it, they are out here carving up some back canyon roads, and yeah I guess if thats what every day driving was like I'd probably want an EVO too, or the WRX even, but thats nothing what every day driving is. For most of us every day driving is about getting around town, running errands, going to work, and maybe hitting up some backroads here and there on the way home. If thats what I'm going to be doing most of the time, I want a car that is super comfy to drive, has nice creature comforts and a good radio (VW) and still fun and spirited. I will gladly give up a little performance to have the MUCH MUCH nicer interior, good ride, and creature comforts (OMG being from the midwest I love the heated seats) and still have a fun and spirited car to drive. Personally, I love blending into traffic and not have the stigma of having the lookit me fast n furious WRX/STI/EVO bro look. The people who I want to notice me, do, and to most of the people I don't want to notice me I'm just another golf on the road. I just feel its a much more practical car and its a lot nicer to live with. I guess thats why I personally chose an R over a subie or mitsubishi.
Hey I have been watching your stuff for some time now. You guys do awesome work! Wondering if you guys are planning on reviewing the midsize luxury segment. Maybe Lexus GS350 vs BMW 535i vs Audi A6 3.0T.
Picked up my 2013 Evo GSR in white two weeks ago. Ten grand less than your blue one. Love it. It's the single most awesome piece of matter I've ever owned. You are correct, you just have to drive them to understand. It's a surprisingly good daily driver, too.
The stats that the EVO and STi get from that small of an engine is amazing, where Lambos have to move up to a V12 just to break 650hp (but they still can't do anything other than go fast) I want something to be an offroad beast, and still carry my family around, and the EVO has provided me with that. Both the STi and EVO are rally rooted, extraordinary works of engineering, and can show up cars that cost 3 times as much, depending on the conditions, and that's why I love them.
