Thanks to pencil pal Bob for sending me these Mitsubishi Hi-Uni pencils in a variety of grades. These beautiful wood pencils are painted in burgundy lacquer with a black tip, and gold foil imprint. Here I compare and contrast the HB, 2B, and 8B versions of these Japanese pencils.

According to my humble opinion, I think 2B is fair enough to write between HB and 8B. This is a great one of your videos, sir. God bless you.

Thank you so much! 2B is one of my favorite grades.

Over two years later, I stumbled across this video, and I put in an order for a set of these right away! I went with an F grade as I do mostly light sketching for graphics design planning. Can't wait to test them out! Also happy to see that if you order a set of 12, you get them in a very nice case!

Superb pencils; Japan knows how to do it. I personally like Tombow and Kitaboshi a bit better, but they are all beautifully designed, beautifully crafted, outstanding pencils.

Hi MAMO - These really are excellent instruments. I have yet to be disappointed in anything from Mitsubishi - and they are beautiful! Thanks!!

Do you mean,you like the Kitaboshi 2mm graphite leads better? Please?

@@greekveteran2715 I just like Kitaboshi pencils better than pretty much any other pencils. It's a personal preference.

You can take up drawing now! One thing I've figured out about Mitsubishi pencils: there's a date code stamped lightly in the paint toward the sharpen end of all of them. I was surprised to feel a flaw in the paint of one, found that date code and knew that of course there was no flaw. I gave a set of these (10H-10B) as a gift, but I did remove the plastic wrap to bask in the tin full of pencil perfection first.

Hi Dave - LOL! As great as these pencils are, I don't think they will give me any extra drawing talent! I can see the imprint of the code it's very faint. What a nice gift a set of these were - anyone who enjoys drawing would love to use pencils like these - and that full set must have looked beautiful! Thanks!!

Great video. Unlike Dixon’s bold claims with the Ticonderoga, I’d personally say this pencil can be claimed safely by Mitsu-Bishi to be “The World’s Best Pencil.” A lot of artists love these pencils. I hope you enjoy using them as well!
@AlwaysAnalog
@AlwaysAnalog 3 года назад
Hi AnthropodSpidey - I agree that the claims of the Ticonderoga don't hold up well when compared to pencils like these, or really any of the Mitsubishi pencils. I can see why artists like these pencils, and I find them a real pleasure to write with. Thanks!
@Ayatron34
@Ayatron34 Год назад
Its the best at some things. As an artist there's no such thing as overall best, only best at particular things cos theres always a trade off. The soft darker graphite is good for shadows, bold lines and filling in areas of matte looking darkness/black. Its not my first choice for fine detail or delicate complex drawing though or my standard pencil where i prefer a midtone HB. Because Hi Uni doesn't highlight well with the eraser, tends to smudge.
@greekveteran2715
@greekveteran2715 Год назад
@@Ayatron34 I agree, I use Faber Castell 9000 and their 2mm leads for drawing. For fast sketches, the Kohinoor 5.6mm 2b and 4b,works better. For writing I use a Pentel Kerry with 2B Ain Stein leads. Graphgear 500 0.5mm is also a pencil I use when drawing/sketching
@vincentmonet6172
@vincentmonet6172 9 месяцев назад
They absolutely are the best. I’ve tried pretty much all pencils (including graphite “lead” for clutch and mechanical pencils) and these are superior. (Pentel Ain Stein leads 0.5, 0.7mm etc are very good for mech pencils.)

I have experience only with the MitsuBishi 9800 HB "For Office Use", and they are pretty good (even the paint job). So these Hi-Uni must certainly be better. Hi-Uni are made of one of the highest grade of pencil cores (and wood) made by Mitsubishi, and they are expensive.
@AlwaysAnalog
@AlwaysAnalog 3 года назад
ZZyx - the Mitsubishi 9800 is an excellent pencil. These are even a grade about the 9800, more so with the core. These are outstanding pencils. Thanks!

Finally I got to order two units of Hi - Uni. One 2B and other B. 2B is definitely smoother than 9800 HB, but surprisingly less smoother than Tombow MONO 2B. The Hi uni cost me more than twice the price of MONO, but the paint job on the hi uni is better.

Great video I've been using the Mitsu-bishi HB 9850. Great writing pencil. I'm sure the 2B is even smoother.

I like this, but to be really fair with erasing, you should have started on the right when your changed erasers since you had build up from the left 2 on all your erasings.
@AlwaysAnalog
@AlwaysAnalog 2 года назад
Hi sclogse1 - I'm not sure what you mean by build up? I try to make sure that all eraser crumbs are swept after each try. Do you mean it would be easier to see how it erased if I did so from right to left? Thanks!

Great review, I really like your use of adjectives to describe the feel of the core, it's a really subjective thing to try to get across but you're pretty good at it! But yeah, I have the tin of these Hi-Uni but loaned it to a friend, in the meantime I have some normal just "Uni" 2B pencils. They're very similar to the "Hi-Uni" but lack that little gold band/indent at the top and, oddly, the box they come looks costlier than the Hi-Uni box and comes with an eraser with a little branded "Uni" shield. I'm curious if you know what the difference in quality is between the Uni and Hi-Uni, if any? The core on the Uni 2B and Hi-Uni 2B feel identical to me, is it just a marketing difference?
@AlwaysAnalog
@AlwaysAnalog 2 года назад
Hi Suiseisexy - A very good question and I agree that both the Uni and Hi-Uni are very high quality pencils. I'm not sure what the difference is beyond the paint, or if there is a difference in the wood or core. They both are luxurious to write with. Thanks!
