Introducing, our Mitsubishi L300 FB Campervan! We bought this secondhand vehicle modified to have a tall ceiling to convert into the perfect pandemic travel vehicle, our home away from home. This video documents DIY conversion week 1: the start of our exciting journey to vanlife.
This week, we started building the kitchen and the murphy bed.
FilAmstagram is a Filipino American family vlog by Paul, Bing, Miriam Grace, and the enduring spirit of baby Kateri Angel Rush. We currently reside in the Philippines.

I just subscribed. Thank you for putting this up and sharing your life, it's our journey. I'm sorry about your daughter last May. I have 2 daughters, both were pre term. Before they were conceived, I had 2 miscarriages, it was heartbreaking. Anyway, it's good to be building your van. I love watching these van build videos, especially here in the Philippines, as it is my dream to be on one, seeing the Lord's creation. May I ask where you bought the faucet, and the sink? Thank you, and regards
@filamstagram
@filamstagram 3 года назад
@@christinebanny3389 Oh wow. Thank you for sharing a bit of your life too. Having preterm babies makes us stronger than we thought we could be. A part of us died when our daughter died, but because she looked so much like Miriam, every time I see Miriam and her baby pictures, I see what she could have grown up to, and somehow it comforts me knowing that while other babies are learning to walk, ours is learning how to fly...in heaven. We bought both the faucet and the sink on Lazada. The sink cost us a huge fortune, only to arrive in thousands of pieces, but it was because we couldn't find one that has a lip below that we can fit a removable chopping board on to. Some DIYers would use a basin, and that is a good alternative if you find one the right size. Hang on to that dream--and maybe will see you on the road someday!

Thank you for your kind words and your prayers. We're happy to hear that your daughter is looking into converting an L300 camper/mobile speech therapy clinic. We got ours secondhand on FB marketplace, and in our search we have come across 2 other modified high roof L300 FBs--they are worth it for the head room. She might want to look into them if they are still available.

Greetings from Bulacan province. I began watching RV RU-vids back in the states to get ideas of how others earned income while traveling. Just about nine years ago, I stepped off the airplane, somewhat a broken man, to begin my Philippine adventure. I had lost my first wonderful Bride to cancer sixteen years ago. Five year ago (July 27) my Beautiful Bride Maria said I do. We too have had our struggles when Maria had a miscarriage and later lost her Dad before Christmas time. He did not live to see our youngest son, now almost two years old. I have observed a small but growing RV movement here in the Philippines and was elated to discover your channel last night while I was adjusting some trades on the US markets. One day, I may share the story of the almost 4X4 project that did not happen due to parts sourcing. I think you made a GREAT purchase with your base vehicle choice. The further you go from home base, the more important reliability becomes and and easy to obtain repair parts at reasonable prices are a must. I know my family will enjoy this series. Now, off to hit the sub button

Welcome aboard! Sorry to hear about your struggles and losing your baby as well. It's a loss that is probably impossible to get over. We would love to hear about your almost 4X4 project. Yes, we are happy that tiny homes on wheels are gaining traction here in the Philippines and very happy with our choice of vehicle. It's quaint as far as campervans are concerned, but L300s literally rule the streets here (next to jeepneys) so spare parts and experienced mechanics are not hard to find.

Wow! That's exciting. You'll probably come across new L300 campervan companies that are doing the fabrication themselves. They weren't any here during the time we started. It's amazing to know that more and more people are appreciating L300s. We were lucky to have come across ours--the raised roof makes a lot of difference.

I'll be interested to see how this goes for you. My wife and I will eventually move to P.I. when this pandemic finally slows down. I had always planned on a car or small truck (no interest in a motorcycle there) - but while I have planned an ambulance build here in the U.S. - it hadn't really occurred to me to do a build in P.I. But it is a great solution! And we will likely take other members of my wife's extended family (scattered all over Luzon) with us as well. Beats the buses!
@filamstagram
@filamstagram 3 года назад
That's exciting to hear! Where will you be based in the Phils? There are newer high roof vehicles that entered the market here. If you are planning to do vanlife with a big family, you might want to look into the modern jeepneys (they look more like buses than jeepneys). They are more expensive, but space and head room will not be an issue. There are professional builders here too, though DIY would definitely save you a lot. Let us know how it goes for you and maybe we will see you on the road someday!
@Michaelw777.52

@@filamstagram Probably in San Fernando, Zambales province on Luzon. That's where my wife wants to live. It's really just the 2 of us; but it's extended family members: brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, etc. I totally won't live near Manila. I would prefer Baler in Aurora province myself - but it's not close to any family members - so it will be an RV destination, among others! Those buses you showed in this video (3:10) look ideal. I totally want to be able to stand up in whatever we get. I'm not tall (5'7) - but I'm too old and stiff to crouch. I figure with one of those, we could have a set of seats behind the driver (and across), leaving plenty of room in the back for everything else. I did see another Phil lady who had her little van professionally done. My intention would be to do a little of both DIY and professional. To me, a solid platform to work with is half the battle. So that's where the majority of the money will go to - the rest would work itself out over time. Who knows? Maybe we can get together eventually, take a trip somewhere.
@filamstagram
@filamstagram 3 года назад
We wouldn't want to live in Manila either. We are south of Manila, 65 km away, on the foothills of a mountain so the climate is much cooler. Zambales is nice--close to the sea, and with the new roads they are building, you can go north or south very easily.

@@filamstagram that is still a good buy given the nice conversion at the back. Old school L300s with 4d56 2.5 diesel engines have high resale value these days due to its reliability. Just look after the fluids and alternator hose (breaks sometimes on old school diesel engines) and it will run worry-free in the years to come (probably minor maintenance required for its underchassis and aircon). That van is a gem. “Everything that glitters is not gold”

When we are done building we will do a video that details costs. We are saving a lot on labor because much of it is DIY, but there are some parts that we will need to pay a welder to fabricate parts.

@filamstagram
@filamstagram 2 года назад
Hello. If by repair you mean the modification of the box area, it was the former owner who bought a 2012 cab and chassis and had paid for the fabrication of a brand new body with a high roof, side door, and wheelchair ramp. We bought it from him at P475,000 (USD9363), which he said was around the same price he paid for the entire vehicle with fabrication. Our entire budget for the conversion is P800,000.
