The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is a plug-in hybrid electric version of the rugged Outlander SUV. It combines a 2.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, and is one of the most popular hybrid vehicles currently on sale in the UK.
It comes with five seats and a spacious interior, and is eligible for a £2,500 plug-in hybrid and electric car grant from the UK Government. It's also exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge. Watch our video review to see if it's a worthy alternative to traditional diesel off-roaders.

Its totally ok, that this kind of vehicle dont get good gas mileage, when the petrol engine comes on. The whole point is, that most people can cover maybe 80-90% of their driving with the electric motor only. So the gas engine is solely there, so you dont have to also buy another vehicle for those occational long trips. Or worry about running out of electricity on your shorter trips. This review is pretty fair overall. But more often than not motoring journalists completely miss the point of electric propulsion, because THEIR job is to drive around in a car all day to test it. But thats not how 99% of car buyers use their vehicle. If you are not either a motoring journalist or a taxi driver, you use your car to go to a place like your work or the house of your friends. Then you park it there, while you do something else, and then you go back home again.

the problem with these plug in hybrids is that they never do the mpg they say, and 42gkm/CO2? my arse i've had one measured at 146gkm/CO2 . Also can car reviewers pls stop making diesel is the better fuel...it isn't, its dirty and causes cancer... also diesel is horrible to fuel up with.
@toyotaprius79

+Blaze 125 (blaz3r125) The problem is the NEDC cycle which is far too optimistic. The same one that says the Kia Picanto 1.2 diesel or Citroen C3 Cactus diesel will get over 90 mpg... The NEDC was only relevant when the average car did 0-60 mpg in 15 seconds (now it's 9 sec) which the test unrealistically operates below speed limits like a pensioner. Plug in hybrids definitely represent the extreme of "your mileage may vary". There are owners who get well into 120 mpg as they charge their car every night like it was intended to be used for. Their are several owners on RU-vid who share what it's like to own a Nissan Leaf, Chevy Volt, Tesla Model S, BMW i3 and Outlander PHEV. A few of them who drive them as company cars (+20,000 miles a year) who report getting over 80 mpg because they take advantage of the rapid chargers that are installed on every service & rest station on the UK's motorways.

+Blaze 125 (blaz3r125) It's hilarious how people willingly inhale tons of carcinogens to avoid a few grams per km of a completely harmless essential life gas and plant food. 50 years from now people will look back at us and laugh.

I have the Outlander diesel. My advice is avoid all together as the build quality is terrible. After 6000 miles, the carpet is worn through and I was told that if I expected them to last longer then I should have bought mats. I have had cars a lot older with many more mile that looked newer. The door rattles and fuel economy is way off the book. The after sales service is non existent as I had a problem with the stop/start which had the warning light flashing, I was told that it did that when it was not being used. I explained that the manual said it was a fault and I was told that I was wrong. After three times of returning to the dealer, they finally admitted there was a fault.
@toyotaprius79
@toyotaprius79 8 лет назад
In theory, the Outlander PHEV gets its 156 mpg figure since, what kind of test would it be if one of your tanks were empty? If you're too lazy or too busy (a car reviewers are) to plug it in, then car reviews like these will never represent the true economy these cars deliver. Most owners of company cars, doing +20,000 miles per year would gladly tell that their 2000kg SUV on average does over 80 mpg. Because they charge it at home at the very least. More ordinary owners certainly achieve over 120 mpg. Even if the reviewer had no real time to just live with the car - at least why didn't he demonstrate what it's like to charge at a rapid station? ~30 mpg is woeful, and only achievable when that poor, little 2.0l petrol has to work alone.

I like the outside looks of this car, the interior only 60-70%, and I like that the gasoline engine can generate electricity for the battery or put the wheels in motion, it`s more proof this way (but which one is more economical). You did not mention anything about range anxiety or how long can you go with the car filled up, for example you need to go 1.000 km in the shortest time possible, let`s say with the car filled up (elctric+gasoline) you have a range of 600 km, and you fill up only with gas (for reasons of time), in theory you should have a range decrease by only 50 km, so you can have a range of 1.150 km with 2 fill ups.
@iainansell5930
@iainansell5930 8 лет назад
unfortunately, he got his facts wrong on that one... the engine will run to provide electricity for the wheels, when battery is flat, the engine will also run to provide additional torque for the electric motors, if you put your foot flat to the floor...... the engine will not run the wheels directly without the electric motors..

A modern TDi estate car can do the same distance on 1 tank and carry as much kit
@80sSumpy
@80sSumpy 7 лет назад
You are absolutely right Russ, Mitsubishi admit that if you do a journey of more than 100 miles then the diesel version is more economical, where this car comes into its own is shorter journeys that are mostly electric powered but also giving you the flexibility of longer range if it is required. Also flipping what you have said about modern TDi's, if you regularly run them on short journeys the DPF clogs up and can cause problems.

it's funny because outlanders don't sell well in the US period
@iainansell5930
@iainansell5930 8 лет назад
its only the phev version that sells well over here, and only within its particular sector( electric vehicles) ...its just that the phev version is more practical(in a carting your kids about kinda way..) than any other hybrid/electric vehicle.... for me, it suits me, as most of my driving is in town, about 10-20 miles round trip...but for me to see my family up north, then i can hop in and get up there easily.... the prius would be far too cramped, the ampera(volt in the us) does'nt have enough seats in the back, the tesla is far too expensive, and still, i would'nt make it up north and back on a single charge anyway... and anything else plug-in electric just does'nt have the range.... i drive a diesal estate at the moment..and I'm starting to realise i need to get rid of it as soon as i can... theres a lot of talk ranging from upping the road tax to something stupid- to banning diesals outright...

The Tesla is pure electric and has around 50 times the amount of batteriers. Try driving your Tesla from LAX to Illinois via Kansas and see how far you get. (Hint: charging stations disappear once you're in Nevada.) The Mitsubishi is a more practical car. At a much lower price point. And, in the US, comes with a ten year warranty. Comparing it to a Tesla is utterly pointless.

Most people who bought these were as a massive tax dodge so I have no sympathy in them being such a bad car (both new version and old). The original was popular because you got £5000 from the government, plus no road tax, and lots back if you claimed it for business mileage. That despite the fact a lot of people never bothered to charge them so they got all the tax breaks but were just as polluting as every other vehicle.

Unless you're buying a Mitsubishi kei car in Japan with overinflated tyres then I'm pretty sure you've got nothing to worry about. Do some research & you'll struggle to find any manufacturers that haven't lied about some aspect of their cars. VW, GM, FCM, PSA, MITSUBISH, SUZUKI, HONDA, have all been caught out, I'm sure this list is just the beginning.
@fundiver198

Everyone with just a bit of common sence know, that the official EU fuel consumption numbers are completely unrealistic for nearly all cars. And the main problem is the test itself, not that some manufacturers "cheat". So honestly who cares, if manufacturer A cheated with some numbers? Its not like the vehicles from manufacturer B are going to be any more economical than similar vehicles from manufacturer A, which did not "cheat". Or perhaps were just not caught yet. And its the same story with those dreaded diesel emissions. The real scandal is not, that VW cheated. The real scandal is, that the test is so flawed, that ALL diesel vehicles, except those few who use "blue add" technology, pollute much more, that EU regulators say, they do.
