On the second day of my trip to the beautiful Mitta Mitta river in northern Victoria chasing trout on fly, I learned some good lessons about which water to target when, and which water to walk past. This is not a video for those who want to see lots of fish being skull dragged in one after the other - I struggled to connect to a fish for most of the day but was eventually rewarded for my persistence. The valuable lessons from this day though came as much from the failures as the success, and that's what I want to share with you. I learned a lot by watching myself back in this video, and I hope you do too!

Enjoyed your video very much. Easy to watch with pleasant accompanying music--unlike some "combat" fly fishing videos that try to make this gentle art into an extreme sport. Haven't fished the Mitta Mitta or Kiewa Rivers since I was a kid over 50 years ago. When the COVID19 restrictions ease and we can travel into regional Victoria, I'd like to explore those areas again. I think I'll be wet fly fishing mostly, with conventional fly gear or tenkara rods, unless there is obvious surface activity. Your advice on nymphing and swinging wets and nymphs was very helpful. Cheers, Steve.

Thanks Steve, glad you enjoyed it! It's a beautiful part of the country down there, I'm looking forward to getting down there again too when the restrictions are lifted! :)

Nice Video mate. What was your reasoning for heading down stream? Do you think that might be why you didn't see many larger fish in the clear water? I'm fairly new to fly fishing for trout but I usually fish upstream with a dry and dropper rig rather than swinging them down stream.

Thanks mate! Yes mostly I like to head upstream, especially on smaller streams. On a bigger river like this it's probably not quite as critical. But the main reason on this day was that there was another guy fishing with me that I took to the spot and he went upstream - so I went downstream! He only got 1 or 2 fish also. I know there were a couple of nice runs up there. :)
