FLY FISHING, fresh and salt, trout and beyond, based in Sydney, Australia. Euro nymphing, Dry Fly, Streamers, Trout Spey, Bass on Fly, I fly fish for a wide range of species including trout but also well beyond trout, in both fresh and salt water. This is my channel for videos on my fly-fishing adventures and a few tips on things that work for me. I hope you get something out of it, please don't hesitate to leave a comment or reach out, I enjoy the conversation and do my best to answer everyone. Thanks!
Hi, casting distance is going to very much depend on your casting ability and the flies you are casting, But for small flies, say nymphs or small wets, I'd estimate maybe 75 feet or so. With the skagit head, plus a 70gr floating tip I have been able to cast longer than that, out to maybe 90 feet on occasion but I wouldn't say it's easy. It's only a 10'9" rod so you're not going to get the longer distances that you would with a big spey rod. You can see some footage of me casting and fishing with this rig in one of my other videos on the channel, search for "Trout Spey Tactics". That might give you a better idea of range. Thanks for watching, hope you found it helpful! :)
@@PeachyFlyFishing Nice, bro,I consider myself a intermediate caster, usually use my 7'6 3wt SH rod ,reach 62ft with double haul. I hope this longer little rod will make a difference,80ft maybe a challenge,75ft is a great distance!
Bear in mind, distance in spey casting is different to overhead casting....if you were overhead casting with this rod could probably get a fair bit more distance with good technique. :)
Thanks! I just had a quick look at your channel and subscribed, always enjoy watching fly fishing overseas, those chalk streams you have over there look lovely! Thanks for the kind words. :)
Haha, yes definitely an oversight on my part there! Don’t think I even had one in the fly box. I keep running back over that fish in my head with all the things I should’ve done….😅
Ah thanks Cory! Yeah all good here mate, really enjoying making the videos and trying to put a bit more craft into how I make them. How's the fishing been over there? :)
@@PeachyFlyFishing what to they say “soul food”? Chasing some reef fish and a family holiday atm…going alright…but would give anything to be on that river with the EN rod!!!! Cheers mate. (PS you following the world champs staring in a couple of days) ?
@@PeachyFlyFishing hope so…would love to see some individuals and/ or our team cracking the podium. 🤞🤞I don’t know many of them personally….just familiar with Tom J (as a fan).
@anthonyclark6118 Tom went so close last year, 4th individually, missed the podium by 1 spot! But our ladies team just won bronze in the Czech Republic which is brilliant! :)
Ah thanks mate! Yeah I reckon I'll do a bit of everything over winter, some saltwater stuff around Sydney, some trout lakes, and I've got a trip up north planned in a couple of months which I'm really looking forward to.... :)
Great job Steve, beautiful filming as usual! Your enthusiasm definitely rubbed off - more Euro gear in the mail today. What a top spot. Shame there was no footage of the big rainbow you landed there earlier. Thanks for editing out my bad language amongst the trees! 😀Keep the vids coming mate, great stuff. Cheers PP
Nice video, beautiful river. I'm not sure where that is or when it was taken, but are we allowed to fish closed season trout streams in NSW as long as no fish are taken?
Hi mate, thanks! Season has closed now for listed trout streams in NSW, lakes are open though. River season opens again on the October long weekend. :)
Yeah what a conundrum! Looks like that's the 1 rod for that size your water you're on. I'm liking the 10' 4 wt for an all around stream/river rod. But that too has its limitations. 🤷♀🤷♀
Yep for sure, everyones needs will be slightly different. A 10' #4 would be a good all round rod for bigger water and bigger fish I reckon, the only thing I'm personally not mad about with 4 weights is the tippet protection for nymphing - I fish 7X and 8X usually and a 2 or 3 weight is a little bit easier to protect super light tippet on. Also for casting lighter nymphs on the euro rig a lighter rod is a bit better. But the extra range of a 10 footer, and the extra weight of a #4 to cast streamers and dry dropper rigs a bit easier would be a nice benefit too.... ;)
Great stuff peachy! How productive is EN in the right water and conditions! Rod tips…so fragile on these rods. I’ve done two in a couple of seasons. Always carry a spare tip in the car these days!!! Happy ‘end of river season’. Thanks so much for the great content…always a joy!!
@@PeachyFlyFishing not sure what flavour your using…they’ll all replace as you know, and pretty good value $ too usually. It’s more the time it takes!. The two ‘beginner’ euro rods I have came with a spare…and being Aussie built replacements were in a matter of days. Not sure if that’s the case with rods built overseas? In the process of upgrading and am picking up a primal 2wt (today..yay!!!). Went primal because its feel and performance wasn’t far off the more premium European and US rods I could trial ( weight, sensitivity and recovery). Replacement part timing was the main factor. All good. Cheers mate. Time to clean and repair the gear…and do some still water😀😀
"Now I wish I could give Brother Bill his great thrill I would set him in chains at the top of the hill Then send out for some pillars and Cecil B. DeMille He could die happily ever after" Wow what a great song and what a splendid video Peachy. Where abouts in NE vic is this Cattle country?
Good job. Nice to see more local content. In past I’ve mainly fished dries. Only started Euro Nymph style this year. I found a good lift in catch rates. Thanks for the tips and great video.
A pleasure mate, thanks! Yeah we all love dry fly fishing of course, it's great, but it's a bit of a shock to the system to start euro nymphing and discover how many fish we've been missing all these years! Cheers for watching. :)
Beaut camera work there, Steve! And what a great spot. Awesome to see you working with Cecil and Cecil. Always informative, thanks for all the effort. Cheers PP
Nice fish and a great job getting him netted in difficult territory. Never easy when you have to go in and chase. Some scary moments! Well done both of you.
Thanks Andrew, yeah I reckon Stewie did the best job he could at the time with the net, it was a tricky situation with the bridge pylon only a few metres downstream. ;)
@@PeachyFlyFishing When you cannot see your footing and are trying to keep your eye on the fish, not tangle the leader and get a head shot in flowing water, excellent job all in all. Add in the threat of a downstream run to the bridge, or around the net man and it really gets interesting.
For me, humbly without offending, in that situation of still waters and small spaces it is better to apply a different strategy that puts the fish less on alert. The line coming and going puts them on alert. Or I would use a very long leader, 5 to 6 meters, or a nylon line, which are transparent and do not alter that type of water. Very small tipet nymphs, very fine, but the most important thing is that they would not go over the line. I think that with that in a place so loaded with fish, more catches would be obtained. Sincerely. Comentarios
Thanks! Yes I agree, your strategy is spot on. From memory I was using a very long leader (around 5.5m) and very fine tippet (7x), it was still very hard to catch the fish except up in the moving water. There were quite a lot of people who had been walking along the river, a few fishing, the fish were already very alert, but in the end I just needed to fish better to catch them! Thanks for watching. :)
All types of fishing have their merits, but it doesn’t get any better than fly fishing in the Snowys. Nothing compares. Thanks for the great vid guys. Felt like I was right there with you 👍
For streams like this would a 3wt 6’6 with WF1F and a x5 leader 4lb tippet be ok?? Cos my other set up is a 5/6wt 9” WF5SS with a 2-3x and 8lb tippet but I’ve got that set up for the big boys at bullen merri so streams like this it’s overkill .. or am I better off buying a whole new set up? I’ve only ever used the smaller set up in the salt chasing baits (yakka and Tommy’s and such)
Yes you would certainly get away with the smaller setup on this stream, for sure. I have a couple of short lightweight dry fly rods, but these days I mostly prefer to fish longer and lighter rods for trout wherever there is enough room to use them, primarily for the ability to hold more line off the water, fish longer leaders, and thus improve drifts. But in really tight cover and close range the shorter rods can be easier to fish with. Shorter rods can also be a little more accurate, if they are not too soft action. The 5-6 weight you're right it's probably overkill for this stream, but you could make it work if you wanted to. Still, it's always fun buying a new rod right?? 😆
@@PeachyFlyFishing might have to sneak a 2/3wt 9” on my wish list haha .. I’m only just getting into fly fishing streams I’ve always fished lakes and the salt with streamers and nimphs so dry and wet flies is wat I’m learning now .. I don’t have any fancy gear it’s no orvis or nothing haha it’s just gotrue and ssuoyailang stuff off wish and Temu it’s not to bad but can def the difference to my 1 expensive one
I notice sometimes you use the reel to bring in a fish, rather than stripping line by hand. Can you take me through when and why please? Love your work.
Thanks Geoff! Sometimes I like to put a fish on the reel, particularly if it's a bigger fish or if I am fishing quite light tippet. The main reason being, the reel drag (if it's properly set) does a better job of preventing a break-off if the fish takes off, particularly when you get it close to the net. :)
Thanks Martin! Putting slack into casts, that’s a tricky thing to do well. Very long leaders (18-20 feet), ending in very fine tippet (usually 7x depending on the size of the fly) so that the leader does not fully transmit the power to the fly. Then it’s down to casting techniques, not overpowering the delivery casts, negative curve casts, and angling the cast down to cast part of the leader on to the water first, so that the final part of the tippet collapses. It’s a little hard to describe in words, but I hope that is helpful. :)
Your video nicely summarizes my entire fly fishing experience. 30 years of flogging the water with a fly rod for 1 fish. I've ditched the nobility of fly fishing for lesser forms of the sport to actually catching some fish.
Haha! Fair enough, its all about enjoyment hey! My fly fishing has improved considerably since I shot this video, I generally catch a lot more on fly these days😆
