I’m a newby to this, embarking on my first project. I’m quite excited about doing it. Thanks for your helpful video, I’m now subscribing. Forgive me if this is a dumb question but is it possible to do mixbook projects using an iPad, or does it need to be on a laptop ?

Brill review. Which site do you recommend for A3 size landscape photobook (layflat)? These sites appear to not give the glossy or premium page option if i select A3. Is there a site that will do this with competitive prices? Thanks

I prefer the thicker pages with mixbook especially for wedding photos.

I've been making shutterfly books for years. However I'm getting sick of the stickers / embellishments as they haven't updated them at all. So I found mix book. I know you said mix book is cheaper but I always make books with the max amount of pages which adds up. Shutterfly offers a sale periodically that all extra pages are free. So for a delux flatlay book I pay about $120 with 110 pages I believe. Does mix book ever offer that deal. When I add ad to my cart a flat lay, max pages 89 and their sale is 50% off, it ended up being $238. Seems a lot more. Curious if you ever see the extra pages deal with mix book because then it might be worth it. Thanks!!!

Great reviews! I've been looking into the best option to create a photo book for my 2 toddler daughters. Maybe a yearly book or 6mos depending on how many photos. What do you recommend the best? Thank you. Appreciate your recommendations 😊
@PhotoBookGuru
@PhotoBookGuru 6 лет назад
depends on your needs. if you are not extremely fussy about print quality then mixbook or shutterfly, if you want the best possible print, then Saal, Myphotobook.co.uk or BobBooks or ZNO

Question, I noticed you mentioned that you can pay to have the logo removed from Shutterfly but I never saw an option for that, and I contacted their customer service reps and they said there is not such option. Also, does mixbook photo books don't come with the logo? because on their website on their FAQ they say that all of their products come with their logo. Awesome review btw.
@julianricardodiaz
@julianricardodiaz 5 лет назад
Mixbook does have a logo at the end of the photobook. Shuterfly has an option at the end of the order process where you select wheter or not to have the logo. They charge USD 10 to remove it.

I enjoyed viewing this video, well done. I do have some questions though. I use to be with Blurb and had two books made up and both came out great, I didn't go for the layflat style. However, I seem to have no account with them now and in joining again, it takes my new username and password BUT, doesn't create account. It doesn't say there is anything wrong, just the thinking turning icon, then just stays on page for creating an account. So not sure what is wrong there. Anyway, what site would be best to make photobooks for clienteles images in your opinion ?. I'd like to add things on some like drop shadows, have two images on one page etc.... I'm in Australia and see you did a book about here, hope you enjoyed your visit here and I look forward to reading your reply. Oh my books would be of nature and for clientele people and pets.

Hi Jay, thanks, yet I did enjoy Australia. Fantastic place. If you only want images and shadows, that's very basic and most companies can do that for you. The best cheaper non lay flat books I could suggest are Mixbook, Shutterfly, Photobox and Blurb. Did you try Blurb from a different browser or resetting your browser? All of the above 4 would be good, just check which has a cheaper shipping cost to Australia, since all of them are based in the US or UK.

I've been creating a book on Mixbook and I'm wanting to fill a page edge to edge with a photo but it tells me it needs to be higher quality or to be smaller. Your book looks really good with the photos taking over the whole page. Did you run into that problem too? I'm wondering if I should just go for it.

Your photo should have at least 15mb in file size if you wish to not encounter any quality issue. I have encountered this many times

I ordered a Mixbook layflat and the matte finish is less than stunning. I liked how easy it was to design and the price was very good, but I'm a professional photographer and I found the matte finish didn't really make these particular photos 'pop' as I had hoped. Hopefully Shutterfly will be better.

That's exactly why I said Shutterfly was the winner for me in the paper section...I don't like matt stocks either

what is the maximum number of pages for each of the flat books. Mixbook only allows 99 pages because of the thick pages. How about Shutterfly?
@julianricardodiaz
@julianricardodiaz 5 лет назад
Shuterfly is pricey. If you want a layflat photobook, you have to pay an additional USD 50 for the deluxe version which is not the case with Mixbook.

hello. i like your reviews. im about to make a 70'th bday book. layflat. i assume there could be about 300 pics.. maybe less. 12"/12" book. from your experience - how many pages should i order so that the book will not be too heavy. shutterfly seems abit thiner which i like. i tried loading pics into Montage. what do you think about them? thick as mixbook? some pics are just under 1600 dpi which is their min. if i direct these images to be the smaller pics in the book will they be as nice looking as they are on my comp screen? or should i be writing this in an email? many thanks sara
@PhotoBookGuru
@PhotoBookGuru 6 лет назад
Hi Sara, lay flat books don't usually go higher than 100 pages. Mixbook is the thickest one I've come across so far, so if you want your book to be lighter, I would suggest Shutterfly, ZNO, Blurb or Saal. All of these editors will give you a smiley and a sad face based on the quality of the photo. So when you place them onto the layout, it will give you a feedback on how it will look in print. Don't worry about dpi, they compress images anyway, just follow the editor feedback for each photo. 100 pages should be enough even if you use full page photos every now and then

I agree . It sort of shows you what you can put what photos you want in which order . Which I really like 👍🏻 other sites I’ve tried don’t offer it. At least from what I’ve seen anyway . Mix book allows me to choose which photos I can place. Gives it more of a nostalgia feel, you know ?

If I edit my pictures I. my editing Apps, will the new edited picture print just as good. Because when I have done edits before and print them at my Walgreens or CVS the pics can look pixalated and not as crisp as the unedited version

I feel the opposite! I love the thinner, more pliable pages of the Shutterfly lay flat because it makes the book less bulky and heavy. And I adore the themes they offer! To each their own for sure though.

Helpful video. I found that you cannot upload photos using Explorer to Shutterfly. You have to use some other search engine such as Chrome. I found that Mixbook cannot handle uploads of high res (16 MB) photos. Also, Mixbook did not respond to customer inquires. Who would you recommend for high res photos?

you say there is no other option other than matte, but when i visited the site there was a gloss option or even a leather version.... maybe that's not the layflat book idk...
@PhotoBookGuru
@PhotoBookGuru 6 лет назад
Those are only for the standard books. The lay flat books can only have the matt, that's why I emphasised that. I think their most expensive book should have the most options, not the cheapest ones.

I have used Shutterfly many times in the past. The photos in the last two books I did were very dark even though they were perfectly exposed on the web site. The technician I talked to about this blamed me for the photos being too dark and told me I should have clicked 'auto correct' on every single picture. The auto correct feature is no longer on the web site. The technician I just spoke with said it was never there.

Question - Does Mixbook allow you to switch between themes midway without changing previous set pages? I do one book a year. It is hard to stick to one theme like travel, baby, or wedding.

yes, you can import layouts from other themes
@jennifernguyen829
@jennifernguyen829 6 лет назад
Thanks. That is great! That is one of the issues I see with Shutterfly. You have to stick to one theme for the entire book. With all the considerations including pricing, if you have to choose 1 to recommend, what would you recommend?

I'm sorry I have to give mixbook a failing grade. Their online layout software crops photos and can't be printed at the original aspect ratio, unless it's already in their proprietary layout ratio, which is unspecified. Furthermore the paper choices are few and the basic specifications such as paper weight are not explicitly listed. I've come to realize that custom books made by hand yourself, choosing the materials you want, will offer the best in quality, and satisfaction. You control all the inputs and variables. These online places are mass produced quick jobbies that cater to a larger demographic of undiscerning masses.
@PhotoBookGuru
@PhotoBookGuru 6 лет назад
That is true, however, not everybody has the ability, resources or time to do handmade books. And there are companies with far more options regarding ratios and paper choice/quality for those who need it. You might want to look at ZNO, Shutterfly or SAAL.
