Mixed Herd Or Keep The Geldings Separated? 

Mixed. Obviously there will be a pecking order whether you have one or two herds. The only time I have seen geldings separate from mares is when the mare and foal first go out into the pasture. Usually after the baby is a couple of weeks old, the geldings can be put in with the mares and babies, if the mare doesn’t want the gelding or even other mares close to her baby, she will communicate it to that horse. When I was much younger, the stable that I went to put all the horses out in the same field, mares and geldings, he had 15-20 horses.

When we had horses, we kept them in a mixed herd never had a problem with it.

Swat is small cause it’s made for the face which is why it’s like that, so you can rub it on the ears and nose etc. it’s not meant for a whole body that’s what the fly spray is for.

Mixed is the natural way for horses to live in a herd with normal dynamics. I'm sure they will all get used to it through the summer months. Just love honeys interventions with sophie trying to work other horses 😂😂. Have you tried running a line of metal wire through along the bottom of the fence to stop her from pushing it up ino shes houdini in disguise ❤❤

Mine have always been mixed. Honestly, it never occurred to me at the time that mixing geldings and mares could be problematic 😂

The gender isn't the important piece. Horse personality is the important piece. We have always had both mixed herds and unmixed herds, but they are always based on individual horse personality. Talac has lived with a mare for 6 years. We dont put Scarlet with anyone but Talac because she doesn't like anyone else. We only put Remi (a gelding) with mares because he antagonizes geldings. Bodie and Candle are both geldings and turned out together. The lack of a mare is happenstance, we just don't have a mare that needs that pasture right now. But they have shared with mares before. We have a pasture we call the "mare" pasture because historically we always just had mares in it. But it wasn't intentional, that was just the group that did well there. Currently the mare pasture has one mare and ome gelding. It previously had two mares and one gelding. Soon it will just have mares again purely because the gelding is moving. Moral of the story - I don't believe in always isolating mares vs geldings any more than I believe in preferring either mares or geldings to own. Personality is the deciding factor always.

Lesson barn (stayed there 6 years, my first barn, and I did the working student thang, so I was a barn rat) had 45 horses. I assure you they were a mix or mares and geldings. All turned out together. That was my experience everywhere until I started hearing about some boarding or competition barns separating them. Horses gonna horse.

I have a question: Even with the skin conditions and everything with your male pig has would you still breed him to poise knowing he has those conditions? I know in an earlier video you said you were considering a neuter. Would you be able to get eye drops for him or something?

At my barn we keep both mares and geldings together except when the mares go into heat then there kept with another mare then put back after the cycle. When the other mares go into heat then you could put Gracie and Storm together and then when Gracie goes into heat her and the baby as you only have one gelding. Might work for you farm might not as every farm is different.

All the boarding barns I worked at kept mares and geldings separate. I think storm needs a friend.

Yorkies were originally working dogs used to hunt and rat. They are meant to have a lot of energy and get down and dirty (but still enjoy companionship) Ellie has a very enriching life compared to a lot of Yorkies!

If it were my herd I would separate just to keep the girls happy, storm doesn’t care as long as he can see them so what’s the problem, get him a gelding you can all ride on trail rides or just around the farm, then everyone is happy 😊

But why was he holding Lady in the barn?

When the neighbors Jim and Fran were alive they had two mares in the field together, and a stallion locked up in a stall separated from the mares.

People don't let the small dogs be dogs!!! They try to turn them human, which is ridiculous. They need to be dogs!!! Ellie is living her best life, the way a dog is supposed to live!!!😊

We have our family reunion coming up towards end of this month. I will try and get pictures of my cousins peacocks and pea hens to share with you.

I would say mixed, but Storm and Penny are not the norm 😂. Storm needs another gelding and be separate.
