When I first started playing around in the world of mixed media art, I used to wonder what the point of collage was. Sure the scrapbook papers were pretty and fun to sort through, but why bother if we're just going to paint all over it later?
Now that I've been at this for a while, I finally get just how many points collage has!!
Starting an art journal spread or canvas with a layer of collage is like a warmup exercise for a mixed media artist! Collage can actually help you clear your head, get your creative juices flowing, help you overcome creative block and even help you figure out how to choose a color palette for your painting layer.
Join me in my studio for a behind the scenes peak at my favorite collage materials from upcycled thrift store gems like vintage books and sheet music to fancy collage paper by Tim Holtz!
I also demo adhesive supplies like matte medium (my FAV!), glossy medium, and gel medium (so you don't have to buy them ALL!), explain WHY you don't want to do your collage layer with mod podge, and show you my favorite mixed media collage techniques.

I think I started watching your channel when you were doing these cereal box for a journal, that started to get me hooked and then it was the faces and I am way behind on those but have them all saved and maybe next spring I will be ready to join the classes that are closed for now. I have a Rosie, too. Was just about to give up on finding a cat when I walked into the SPCA and she hollered at me from a cage, in a room off to the side. How can you resist a cat who talks to you. And since my godchild's name is Rosie, I figured it was meant to be. BUT. We were returning to see about another cat name BoBo, who captured our attention when he stood up and up and up and was the tallest cat I'd ever seen. Then BoBo bit me when we went to pet him. So now Rosie has our heart and home, and she loves to sit on the drafting table, sniffing ephemera and drinking paint water. And oh yeah - LOVE your videos. I sent my sister, who is looking for something simple to start crafting, a starter collage kit I put together and a link to your videos.

Hi Karen, I just found you totally by accident. Just looking through RU-vid using my new computer I just got. I have no clue how I ended up right on your page. First you have so much energy, exciting energy. You could catch anyone's attention. Love it, you certainly make someone want to craft, even if they didn't before watching your video. Patterns - wow. That’s a great idea! Do a collage for us! No, no, no - not piano music. I play the piano. Just could never do a sheet of music. Now, tissue paper with music notes - YES. Love them! And gift wrap - just thinking yesterday how to get rid of a bunch I have in a box - Thanks great lesson! I worked myself silly yesterday doing Christmas cards - so I’m going to see what I can do today to start the collage and do something FUN for myself.

Please send me a hamburger cheat sheet. I’ve been watching your awesome videos and practicing, practicing, because practice doesn’t make you worse. Ha, I love your philosophies. I saw at end of March you’re having a class in Asheville. I’m trying to get the courage to do this. All by myself, as a 70 year old starting player and enjoyer. That would be my first ever art class. All great advise and info. I agree about podge. I often had my pages stick together in my HOT climate.and that doesnt happen with Golden even as a sealer.

As a recovering book worshiper I am always amused when people get upset about old books being destroyed. I would swear they haven't been to a thrift store or yard sale in years. Except for new releases, recent best sellers and widely loved classics, books are piling up and deteriorating (have you ever smelled a book that hasn't been opened recently?). Meanwhile too many of us are buying brand new materials for collage - at great expense to ourselves and the environment. For the love of Mike and Mother Earth, use found materials - including unwanted books.

Wonderful video Karen, thank you so much! The things you collage with are exactly what I use too. Did you know the easiest way to get the backing off a napkin is to take just a small piece of scotch tape, put it anywhere on the BACK of the napkin and lift - it takes off a piece of the backing and you easily rip the rest away :) I also buy my own tissue paper from the dollar store and because I have SO MANY stamps, I can make customized tissue paper for backgrounds (I am on a fixed income so it helps if you can't always afford the Tim Holtz one). Love your kitty too :)

I used collage backgrounds to create your fox and llama projects BUTI must admit I got too involved and loved the collage backgrounds...I didn't want to cover them lol I have a music sheet clear stamp and have stamped it out and painted it with coffee!!! I don't know where I got that idea but haven't use it as of yet in case the smell of coffee lingered but it hasn't so I have a lovely piece ready to be used in a collage background! Thank you for this video ! I have acrylic paints that are glossy so if I add a bit of matte medium to them they will be as good as a matte acrylic paint?

Awesome Leslie!!! To answer your question, yes adding matte medium (or ultra matte) does knock back that glossy shine quite a bit! I just did that today!

I find things at antique stores. It’s a lot of fun. Sometimes once I get the items home, I can’t tear them up. Like some love letters a husband and wife wrote back during the war in the early 50’s. She was in Texas, and he was stationed in New York. They were so sweet. I live in Texas and wonder about their lives. Love your videos.

Watching your videos has really gotten me back with my mixed media art and drawing! When I was younger, I really loved drawing and took every art class I could up to my senior year in high school. In my senior year, I took advanced art and kept all my drawings in a port folio. I wanted to take art in collage but was told I would go no where with it. It was only a hobby. I decided to become a pre-school teacher instead because I could do all the things I love to do with the kids. Over the years, I stopped doing art but in the last year I gotten back into it! It feels like I came back to my first love! Thank you so much! I realize now there is so much to learn and your videos have been such an inspiration to me!!! Also, I enjoy the process of collage. I apply your hamburger system and it is really, really helpful! Again, thank you!

What are the best pen,pencil to draw on the collage layer? I'm struggling with that.

Waaaay more on this in this Friday's video but I'll tell you right off the bat if you don't want the outlines to smudge or run just stick with a graphite pencil or lightfast colored pencil. If you want a bit of drama then opt for a watercolor pencil! Again, more coming up on this in video 5 of the series!

Hey Karen- I’m super new to this. I do practically every craft known to man. I have ALOT of scrapbooking stuff and haven’t yet finished my daughters high school years ( she’s 32). But my main question is why collage? What’s the purpose in the end? Please don’t feel offended, I certainly don’t mean if that way. I just would love to start- but I need a reason as to why. Not offended in the least! Reasons are that it adds Interest, Texture, can Inform your entire color scheme, patterns and designs and keeps things interesting! That being said- you can absolutely skip it all together!

I see you have the skin tones from Barnes and Noble, also the Pitt Big Brush. And then I saw an Arteza review that looked awesome. So those are all different products! The skin tones you are referencing are alcohol based, the Pitt Big Brush pens are Ink based and the Arteza brush pens are watersoluble. So if you're talking about brush pens for mixed media work, HANDS DOWN go for the Pitt Pens!!!

Love your drawing❣️wish I could draw like you, love how your girls come out. I also love mixed media, but wen I use gesso I like to use a credit card instead of a pallet knife and I like it smooth and evenish lol. I always see other leave it chunky, which now that I try n ask my question I see I can do it how I want to do it lol. Thx for teaching us stuff lol

So this was really fun, but i had to stop watching because i got motion sickness! Me, lol. i can sit on the seat with my back to the front on cruise ships to Canada, and eat and never get sick. lol.
