I really enjoyed this tutorial and your gentle way of teaching. I have attended many classes at several of the craft schools here in NC, but now that I've discovered RU-vid, I'm going to save a lot of money with quality classes like yours. Thank you for taking the time to film and post these.
Pat Thompson Hi Pat! I have done a lot of teaching over the years, but travel wears me out.. so I have committed to one large class a year and I try to do 2 Vlog posts a month. I am so happy you enjoyed this little post and thanks for commenting! We appreciate it! 😘
I know this video was posted over a year ago BUT WOW! Thank you!!! I am a newbie at this and I bumped into your video and boy am I glad I did!!!! Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with all of us!!!! You are amazing!!! I am now gonna be hooked on your channel!
I’m so glad to see all the ways you use muslin in projects! It’s easy to find and I always have it in my stash. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful demonstrations.
Denise Kennemer You are most welcome, Denise! I love muslin, it takes so many applications and so easily. Thank you for watching and taking the care to comment! 😘
Hi Cat!! I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have only made old book journals by gessoing the existing pages. Have always wanted to make an actual book with my own signatures. You made it look easy. I will definitely be making one. LOVE the look of the Tyvek!! Thank you for this video. By the way, your hair is looking SO pretty. What a beautiful shade it is growing out.
Hi Audrey, great! Hope you try out the technique, there are a couple of other ways to do it, but I will do those videos later. Working on the miniature book right now, trying to duplicate it for a new segment. Thanks for the compliment about the hair, can't wait to cut the last brown out on the ends!!! 💗
I have only just discovered your channel and I love the work you do. I particularly enjoy your use of a natural, neutral pallet. I am an experienced mixed media artist but my chief joy is that there are always new things to learn. Thank you for sharing your ideas so generously. Carol UK
Hi Caterina, I'm so glad I found you before starting a book....I have a large mixed media paper pad so will use that. Just need to figure out the best glue that lasts!
Hey, Postalorphan, I have a video on my to do list, titled, Creating the Perfect Travel Journal, and yes I will be using my old journals as examples of what worked and what did not work.. so stay tuned!! Thanks for your comment and for viewing!!
Great ideea using the Tayvek for the cover. Only way I used it was for the spine or making texture for mix media collage. I love how it's looking and definitely I will try this teqnique. TFS Hugs
I just found you, and I'm already a groupie! lol. *LOVE* the faux leather look using the Tyvek. Cannot wait to see more of your videos. Thanks so much for sharing your creativity with us. :-D
Karen Thompson Hi Karen! Welcome to my channel! So glad you liked the project! I try to put 2 videos out each month, and we over 40 plus Vlog posts now.. So happy watching! 😘
LOVE THE LOOK! I am a little confused about the signature threading..your video shows two different stitchings in the center, but only one set of stitching holes along the spine..did I miss something?
This is a wonderful, well-done tutorial! Thanks so much - just two weeks ago I was searching for a tutorial for using Tyvek like this and couldn't find one. Were you using soft gel medium for the glue?
Hi Tricia, So glad I posted it then!! I use Golden Matte medium for the glue. Bookmakers would use PVA. I have used both. If I were going to create something to sell, I would use PVA. Thanks for watching!!
This is such an amazing and fun project! Also a great tutorial! What kind of paint did you use to paint the tyvek? Is it acrylic paint? You advised to use PVA glue on tyvek on one of the comments, and which brand of PVA glue do you recommend? I tried using Elmer's glue that is PVA based on my previous project and the tyvek didn't stick :(
Thank you, so glad you liked the Tyvek tutorial. I used Golden acrylic paint and walnut ink. I used Golden Matte Gel Medium to adhere the Tyvek. The PVA glue I was recommending can be purchased at Dick Blick or Hollander's, and is archival and acid free and made for professional book binding. I doubt that PVA would work on Tyvek. Sorry!
Thanks for the inspiration! I love working with Tyvek, and I also love the paint colors you used for the cover. Can you please repeat the color names and explain the the use of ink crystals? Thank you.
Carolyn Lawton so glad you liked the Tyvek.. I generally use Golden Quinacridone Azo Gold, raw sienna and Raw umber.. my favorites. The crystals are great because you can make a really rich ink, by using as much as you want and mixing it with water. Thank you for watching! 😘
josh baker Hi Josh, I generally use Golden Paint and Golden Matte medium as my primary glue. I do use other paints as well, including Seth Apter's paint Inktense pencils and other brands like lumiere. I often use PVA glue for most book making and E6000 for assemblage work. Thanks so much for watching!
Hi! Would you please explain what you mean by “mixed media paper” rather than regular paper? I’m still trying to learn the proper language of book/journal making. I think I found my other questions already answered in the comments but didn’t see this one. Thank you so much! 💜
Hi Dearheart, If you shop at Michaels or Hobby Lobby or any art store, you will be able to buy a pad of paper that is made exclusively for mixed media, it has a vellum finish and will take a lot of abuse, paint, sanding and layers, other papers will not hold up to all the things that mixed media requires. You might also like to follow me on my blog, as I always post my work there and what I am doing, especially my journals and all the products that I use. Thanks for viewing!! http:/www.caterinagiglio.blogspot.com
Sharon Eley Great question, Sharon! Both! LOL I do not like the feel of paint or glue on my hands, but after so many years of exposure to chemicals in the studio, I think it is wise to mitigate contact with my skin. Thanks for your question and thanks for watching! 😘
I cannot wear gloves while doing my mixed media, it drives me nuts, I like feeling all the mediums I use, but then again I live in Minnesota, and don’t wear gloves/ mittens in our harsh winter’s. I love your videos Cat, and have been binge watching them all, thank you 😊
How do i know if the envelopes at the post office are tyvek. I picked up a few and yes they have printing on them but i figured ill be layering and experimenting to it will just add to it.
Hi Carolyn, Tyvek is a specific material, it is very strong and Fed Ex envelopes were made with it. You can purchase Tyvek online that has no lettering. I suppose asking someone at the Post Office for Tyvek envelopes would be the best way.
Fran Brown - I used some Tyvek tape for the spine and used the hidden spine technique and the glue does not stick to the tyvek tape. Used Tacky glue and then Wellbond. Please advise.
Fran Brown Hi Fran ... I have never used Tyvek tape... so, I am sorry, I do not know what kind of glue will stick.. So sorry, I only use Tyvek for covers.
td thebookbinder Thanks for your question! My knots held but they can always be doubled... It really depends on the size of the awl, right? The wider the awl, the bigger the knots...
