How many verb tenses can you count in the following sentences? "If you practice every day, you will improve. But you also need to know that if you didn't develop good study habits in the past, you might have trouble in the future." There are several verb tenses in this excerpt, and they are all mixed together. But complex sentences like these are what make English a very rich and interesting language. In this challenging lesson, we will look at conditional sentences that mix tenses and even use the verb "will" in the "if" clause. Make sure to do the quiz at www.engvid.com/... to practice and perfect your understanding of mixed tenses.
TRANSCRIPT
Hi again. Welcome to www.engvid.com. I'm Adam. Today's lesson is a little bit tricky. It's grammar, it's conditionals, but we're going to look at "Mixed Conditionals". Now, before I get into the different types of ways that you can mix tenses and the conditionals, I want to do a very quick review of the conditionals that most of you learn in your ESL classes or your English... Other English classes, because these are the ones that are most commonly taught, and everybody, all your teachers want you to memorize these structures. The problem is then you might see mixed conditionals in other places, and you get all confused. Okay? I'm not going to get too deep into these, because you can find other good lessons by other engVid teachers who have already covered some of these on the site. I'm just going to do a quick review, and then I'll get into... Deeper into the mixed conditionals.
So here are the four main types of conditionals you learn: "If I won the lottery, I'd buy a house." So this, just so we are clear, is "would", I've contracted it to "I'd". "If I won", I have simple past tense, plus "would" in the second clause, in the condition clause, in the result clause. "If I had known she was coming, I'd have come too." Okay? Here I have the past perfect, plus "would have" plus PP, past participle verb. Now, these are both unreal, mean... Meaning that they are hypothetical, they are imaginary. This is about a future or present unreal situation. I didn't win the lottery, I'm not buying a house; this is all just imagination. This is about the past. Now, the reason it is unreal is because I can't go and change the past. So, this didn't happen, and so this didn't happen. This is, again, imagination, but we're looking at the past. Okay?
"If you boil water, it evaporates." If you notice here, I have simple present verb and simple present verb. This is a real conditional. It means it's true. Whenever you have a fact-okay?-a result is based on this condition and it's always true... By the way, "evaporates" means becomes steam, it goes away. Right? If you boil water, eventually you have no more water in the pot. So this is a real conditional, always true. Simple present, simple present. Lastly: "If you study hard, you will pass the test." Simple present verb, "will", verb, like future. So, again, this is a real situation, because this is true. If you do this, this will happen as a result. So these are the ones that you mostly learn.
If you have any questions, again, go to www.engvid.com, find the lessons about these that can explain it in more detail. But now we're going to see other situations, other sentences with "if" conditionals that are not like these. Sometimes we can mix tenses, sometimes you can... Sorry. Let me stop myself, here. Sometimes your teachers tell you: "Never put 'will' with the 'if' clause." Well, what I'm going to show you is that sometimes, yeah, you can. This is the problem with English: There's always exceptions to the rules. Today we're going to look at some of those exceptions. Okay? Let's see what happens.
Okay. So now we're going to look at a few different types of mixtures, if you want to call it that, with the "if" clauses. But before I start to show you these examples, I want you to understand that these mixed conditionals are all about context. You can generally understand what is going on, what the relationship between the two verbs are by looking at the context, looking at the time, looking at the place, looking at the situation that's going on, and should... It usually should be very clear, but in case you're wondering how to construct these so you can use them yourselves, I'll show you with a few examples. Okay? These are in no particular order. They're just examples, and we're going to look at them individually.

Jianan Li Are you sure you can just say "if clause"? Doesn't sound quite right to me. I feel like it should be "the if clauses" or "if clauses", because there are multiple or is "if clause" the general term for all the different cases? Btw. if you took "would" in the third example you would need "watched" instead of "watch" (simple past), wouldn't you?

Hello! You are such a great teacher! Thank you very much! Your explanation is always very clear! If by any chance you could help me with my very interesting question, please: When we talk about Unreal Past using The Third Conditional we know what really happened. Example: "If I hadn't had a lot of money, I wouldn't have gone with her that summer and we wouldn't be together now." Here I know that I had a lot of money. I know that I went with her that summer, and I know that we are together now. "If I had had a lot of money, I would have gone with her that summer and we would be together now." Here I know that I didn't have a lot of money. I know that I didn't go with her that summer, and I know that we aren't together now. But, what if we don't know? Example: You don't know which way was chosen by your friend, but depending on it, there could be different consequences in the past, present or future. "If she chose this way, we will meet her when we get there." (Future possible consequences) "If she didn't choose this way, we won't meet her when we get there." (Future possible consequences) "If she chose the other way, she could meet/may have met wolves." (Past possible consequences) Another example: The speaker is someone like a police investigator and is thinking about a suspect. The speaker doesn't know for sure whether he stole the money or not, but believes that if the suspect is really guilty/really stole the money, he will leave/is going to leave the country soon. "If he stole the money, he will leave the country soon." (Future possible consequences) Another example: You are thinking about your old friend from your childhood. You don't know what have happened to her. And you say to yourself. "If she passed her exams that day, she has a lot of money now." (Present possible consequences) We talk about a real possibility in the past (something that may or may not have happened) and its possible past, present or future result. You do NOT know whether it happened or not, unlike The Third Conditional(or The Second Conditional), where you DO know whether it happened or not. Dear Teacher, are my example sentences grammatically correct? What do we call them (which conditional are they)? This question is so common in my country because in the Russian language we use such conditionals all the time especially in literature such as Dostoyevsky's novels and so on. A lot of people ask the same things but can't find out the answer.

if you didn’t study computers in high school (past condition), you might find this course difficult (present consequence). There could be a more formal way to rewrite the sentence, which is to mix the conditional 2&3, “if you hadn’t studied the computers in high school, you would (might) find this course difficult.” Since there is not really a future situation exists.

There's grammar(doesn't mean to be offensive ^^), but mixed conditionals are amazing. Wt I'm saying is human uses his ingenuity to get round the rules he set yesterday. Adam's right, it's all about CONTEXT. You can't easily feel what makes him put down those examples as the backgrounds or stories behind are not given in detail. I've got some other examples from movies and they totally make sense. Mixed conditionals are used to enrich our expressions. If they didn't exist, it'd be a fly in the ointment.

I'm an English tutor but not a native speaker. I generally have no problem understanding things 'cuz I kind of grew up in a society that uses English a lot but it gets a little tiring when my students ask me questions about tenses. I just tell them, it's great to know grammar but if you're constantly thinking about it, it's like you're playing tennis with your eyes on the scoreboard. Knowing grammar is good but we also gotta understand the context of what's being said.

B) Result clause - To talk of the future>>>>> Use will do, all other modal verbs, or imperatives. - To take of the present>>>>> Use would+inf - To take of the past>>>>> Use would+have+done

There's another case missing regarding this lesson (most said by Americans) which is: If I would have won I would have celebrated the victory In regular conditional 3 is : if i had won i would have celebrated the victory Good job by the way Mr Adam :) your lessons are useful.

I don't know why but I guess this could be explained easier. Do you have any tables to see the difference between these conditionals? I suppose that if you have a table to depicts the difference it would help a lot to grasp the concept.

You are a great teacher. I still have a question. Can I use "should not have done" to give sb. past opinion/advice, even though I know they DIDN'T do it in the past ?

I think might≠will might=would might is pp form of"may". At 7:00 the first sentence is 2nd condition. The if clause is hypothetical condition of present.

Hello everyone! When it comes to the last example, would it be correct to say: "If my parents hadn't been going I'd have invited you"? or" If my parents weren't going to go I would have invited you"?Please answer me because I've been struggling to get this straight since I don't know how long.

Great video! Thank you so much. But I have a question. For example, "If it weren't so important, I wouldn't have asked you this." or "I wouldn't ask you this." But I did ask this. So, which one should I use and what's the difference? Thank you so much in advance.

Hey teacher I have a really confusing doubt that's killing my nerves. Whenever I bump into new verbs that I've never seen before I go and check'em on the internet 'cause I wanna know their tenses and I've crossed with some verbs that according to Internet have double tenses and I don't really get it. Which one is right? The first example that comes into my mind is the verb "Shred"; shred in past and past participle is still "Shred" but "Shredded" aswell. Hope you could help me out. THANKS!
