Learn how to blend the feel and power of a Belted note or phrase with the versatility and range of your Mixed Voice! The result, when done correctly, is a beefy and free sounding middle high register that is sure to create some "money notes" in your singing! I'll show you exactly how I figured out how to blend the two approaches and how easy it is to start practicing!

Probably the toughest lesson I experience is dealing with the way the wife looks at me when I'm making all these sounds in my studio or shower! I definitely need to develop a thicker skin or a don't give a s*** attitude about how I'm perceived by others.

I had my first gig today, played it safe for the first song we did - sung it an octave lower. The performance suffered for it, i could have just gone for it but was afraid of two notes in whole song. Next time imma just say fuck it and go.

ratchet9868 you could have the instruments tuned down maybe a half step. Bon Jovi sings Wanted Dead or Alive like this and still struggles with it a little. I’m singing it this way and my goal is to increase my range so I can sound great in it’s original key of D

@@theophany1770 i could, but we dont have the equipment to have seperate guitars and basses tuned down and tunung mid show can look very unprofessional. I just need to work on my mixed range as i can sing way higher but i have a weird gap in my range where i cant sing properly and i strain too much.

Hey Chris, I've seen a lot of great vocal lessons on RU-vid, but one thing really unique to you is how, as a guitar player, you've made the comparison to the human instrument. Usually when vocalists talk about tone, it's not the same as guitar players think of it. I now see, how character, percussion, tone, texture and dynamics are similar from vox to guitar. Thanks!

Awesome. So many singers try to bypass this middle area because it can be very challenging and involves the entire body and mind. You have to train to sing in this middle area, move in and out of this area, and to able to sit in this area. A perfect example of sitting in this area is singing the Chorus in Toto's "Africa." It took me a long time to get that one section reasonably consistent.

Oh, sh*t! I almost always sing with belt in my upper-chest register (surely I make sound softer when it's necessary), but I've never tried to do that in my mixed voice... And I always have been surprised why that sound is so weak and thin. It's amazing, as much as this idea is ingenious, it is just as obvious. Hey Chris. I’m starting to get better at developing my mixed voice. I’m now able to hit notes more frequently rather than something I’ll only hit once in a while. However, they still sound a little strained and is still in the process in sounding more powerful. I came back to ask about the mixed voice warm-up. I found that using the “yawning” method working a little better for me than the “dying cat” one. I wanted to ask do you recommend I stick with using the yawning method for my warm-ups or is it better to still use both approaches? I also wanted to ask through time, will those stained high notes become more comfortable for me to sing to the point that I can reach even higher notes later on the more I push through? I know it might sound a little silly but keep in my mind I never took my singing seriously until just under a month ago. However, In just these past few weeks, I’ve learned and improved so much just from watching a lot of your videos already. Keep it up and I wish you the best, Chris. I don’t know what would happen if you weren’t around to inspire people to sing at a faster rate. I would also love to have a shoutout from you for my progress in my singing by singing the song “Your Love” by The Outfield from now (which I recorded an awful snippet of me singing it) to how I’ll sound a few months later. Again, thanks for everything Chris 😌😌😌

Chris this is one of the most enlightening videos you've done before! Thanks a lot! I've been watching your videos and learning with you. I have a quick question: Is the mix range something you slowly conquer, like pushing the high notes one by one, practicing to expand it, or is it a body configuration that almost instantly allows you to cover that range with more presence? Thank you again!

Is there anything wrong with using chest when you have the pick of either based on your range? Obviously the key is developing a usable mixed voice, but I unlocked my mix about 15 years ago and still don't like it. I occasionally do get pulled chest, which I know is the big problem people have when they won't use their mixed voice, but generally I'm not doing any pulling.

feel my love by Adele is an example of where you can use your head register. “ I know you haven’t made your mind up yet , but I will never do you wrong” instead of belting that line. Try using your head voice and cross over to chest. This does take a lot of practise and it will expand your vocal range.using chest voice for belting can be really bad in the long run and you can damage your voice.

Thanks Chris, I remember singing Alter Bridge songs in school and trying to hit high notes by using just my chest voice avoiding what (naturally) was mixed voice, but as I didn't know what it was, I quit using it. Now I feel confident enough to try it once again, thanks again for this approach!

Great stuff as always ton of production value and interesting approaches. How do I know if I'm in a mix or a belt? I can go up to a c5 consistantly and on a good day a c# or d natural. And it doesn't hurt I mean sure if I just sang 50 c#5s in a row I'd experience fatigue and some strain but I can sing high for hours before any fruggyness comes into my voice. Do you think I'm in mix? I feel a ton of resonance on my face and a very high ring...if I sustain and move my tongue I hear whistle notes like tuvan throat singing. If I push higher than a d I however it does turn into vocal fry screams. I can sing down to a2 g#2 consistantly if that let's you know where my belt should end. I'm happy with my voice I sing in 3 little bar bands but I want to know if I'm missing something. I can sing something like show me how to live with a very chesty strong loud b4 over and over without strain. Thanks a bunch in advance
