The Short Blades Symposium hosts a variety of fighters from multiple different combat systems, and puts them together against a short weapons fighting event, a knife fighting event, and a short blade cutting event. Contact cement & the right solvents to clean the floor after. But test to make sure no floor damage first. Or next time just use tape to signify the zones.

Worth noting that the Machete Reese was using cost $9. If that isn't a low entry point to start learning how to cut, I don't know what is.

Water bottles are cheap, stand can be iffy but if you're creative it's not hard either if you're really pinching at pennies. Big thing is that there's a lot out there that think there's no point to enter cutting if you don't have an Albion. I did sharpen it, but not to any special extent that I would with any other sword I sharpen. As to videos of it being ineffective, I couldn't tell you. Probably a mix of everything.

im filipino, but i really like the messer. But for a zombie apocalyps id go for the machete. its a multi pourpose tool and weapon in one.

The most beautiful blade I've ever seen in my life was from Philippines Filipino martial arts. Barong kabamtuli minasbad etc, so frickin beautiful to see!!! I will buy a barong and a Golock on my next payday !

Random people: Why do you want to learn swordsmanship? It’s so outdated! The third world: Machete fights in the streets Seriously though, seeing the machete was cool. There are some videos where you see the damage a machete does in a fight. Cutting off limbs is not out of the weapons abilities. The Bowie knife was interesting too. Goes to show why so many of them were 10-12” in blade length.

In many parts of my country, it's still heard of for some people to settle their differences in duels with long knives, especially in rural areas, a practice dating back to the 18th Century. Many rural men here still carry their knives in the old fashion way, and on horseback too.

Really cool footage and I liked the feat at the end a lot. I have to say though, while I don't mean to criticise the scoring for it, it feels a bit weird that martially solid places to stab someone like the throat or downwards beside the collarbone are counted as misses.

It's a test of precision under speed/duress, if you see the scoring points of it prior, inside the two boxes give 10 points, missing the boxes are 5 points. So still deadly yes, but not the indicated targets. If we do the feat again then we'll get a better target for the thrust.

A competition needs clearly defined scoring criteria. Maybe removing the human figure and just having two squares on a white sheet of paper would have been better, given the obvious bloodlust of the crowd ;p

That was the criteria though. In the boxes, 10 points. Outside the boxes, 5 points.

Nive video!! this is really cool. It's like you guys came up with a competetive environment for all of us that grew up in the 90's cutting cardboard boxes with cheap katanas and SLO's from flea markets. Keep it up! I think this combined with some sort of like forest of tatami mats and having them cut their way through it would be cool too.

again, as stated in the rules you have to hit right in the boxes of the head or center mass. Outside the boxes and you get 5 points instead of 10.

Idea for training: Set three tatami mats in a narrow slalom row 1.5m apart. Attack each with a true edge and false edge, or alternating pattern, and attack each successive mat in a unique fashion. Take no more than 3 strides from one mat to the next. Completing quickly is factorable.

To be accurate, none of these are real fighting weapons. The Messer was more of a tool that could legally be owned a d serve as a weapon. The Machete is obviously for cutting thick foliage.

Pinuti is not an ilonggo blade. It is originally a cebuano blade. What lamont was holding is a pinuti.

Each region, sometimes even provinces, have their own set of blades. Wait till you see what does a "ginunting" in Bicol region looks like, very different from the one from Panay. Some Filipino blades have similar names but can look very different.

Contest is not standardized. Heavier knife would cut better if equally sharp. There should be weight category or blade length category.

The cutting skills definitely plays a part on this not just how sharp the sword is.. There's no shortage same in making a mistake as I've seen katana experts make the same mistakes.

Those plastic things on the floor... I think they should be on top of the tarp or perhaps some yoga mats (better grip) to prevent them from sliding around.

You mean the tatami mat? they are very easy to cut, I've cut through them with kitchen knives and blunt swords before. A well sharpened sword goes through like butter, when you get a perfectly aligned edge on it, you don't even feel the mat.

How are points awarded? The number of cuts, clean cuts, angle of the cuts? I am a bit confused. (PS note to self... read the annotations before each video... LOL)
