I love how your monochromatic paint mash-up turned out! I relate to your art anxiety. I often avoid the thing I love and want to do (create art) for fear of 'failing'. You learn that attitude early on when raised with the expectation to be perfect. I beat myself up and feel horrible when art falls below my expectations. When I'm satisfied with a painting, I feel a sense of temporary relief. It's the same cycle over and over.

Diane O Don't let that stop you from making your art! When i get stuvk that way, I think of it as an experiment. Give yourself permission to make something ugly on the way to making something beautiful.

Wow same! I also have the same problem due to my upbringing by my parents. Nothing ever seemed good enough and I was never happy with my work since it was never good enough. Just like how my parents love to tell me that. It's a bad mindset but I'm glad you have a system to get rid of it. Maybe I'll find my own way to get rid of it. Also the painting turned out really well! Even if I'm not really a fan of that colour

RELATABLE AF. My parents are religious and were super strict when I was young, they also fought a lot with each other and my older brothers so I learned that "attention is bad" at a very young age. My family is also naturally intelligent so I found elementary school extremely easy and we were all expected to go to uni. All of that cumulatively caused me to be extremely perfectionistic and have crippling anxiety regarding social situations and the possibility of any sort of failure from a young age. When it all caught up to me in early high school and I developed a whole host of anxiety disorders and major depression and couldn't function, my life fell apart. At this point I'm kinda holding it together. I still live at home, which is hell, because I can only handle a part time job and can't move out. I have a long distance girlfriend who I love with all my heart but it'll take forever to save up to move to the UK and live with her because of my low-paying job (my mum and siblings know about her, but not my dad who is still extremely religious to the point of loving and supporting Trump. If we didn't live in Canada he would have voted for him.) I love watercolour and have spent so much on supplies, but I paint less than once a month because I'm crippled by doubt and anxiety when I sit down to paint and my brain freezes so I can't think of what to paint anyway. I can't even rationalize that I'm good at it and comfort myself because my anxiety has prevented me from painting enough to even get good at it!
@WaterColorMisfit
@WaterColorMisfit 6 лет назад
Elise O'neil I’m so sorry to hear that. But I know how you’re feeling - very same story as you. With a family member being a Narcissist on top of the man made legalism. It’s definitely horrid. I was really debating about sharing my story as anxiety was saying no. But I’ve been floored to see there are so many others dealing with this that I feel the only way to help others is to open up. I appreciate you sharing your story and being brave to do so!
@alexoneil594
@alexoneil594 6 лет назад
Watercolor Misfit It may also make you happy to hear that after watching this video I did some painting that night. The result was ok, but what was important was that I actually did it and told myself it was alright if it didn't turn out well because you need to practice to get better. I'm going to try and paint once a week, reminding myself it's not a waste of paint and paper if it means my next painting will be better, and after enough bad paintings there will start to be good ones. More good news, my girlfriend asked for my ring size to start looking into engagement rings :) Life can suck, especially when you're hardwired to be anxious and expect the worst from a young age, but there are moments that make it worth persisting.

I noticed rather early on that my creativity thrives on restrictions. There's something about rising to the challenge that just gets my ideas flowing. I also have always had a horrible time making a decisions when faced with too many options, fear of choosing the wrong thing results in a waste of time overthinking things. Anyway, enjoyed this video, the color reminds me of walnut ink. :)

I agree so much. Every time I draw something, my peers appreciate my art. While I’m looking at it dissatisfied, knowing it’s not perfect enough to people I try to prove my talent to. It’s like making a video to satisfy only the viewers, but you as an entertainer, are not happy with it. My parents raised me, telling me I have to be perfect and obedient. So all my life I work my hardest to please others instead of me. If I mess up, people might say it’s okay. But I had high expectations for myself and so did some people. Anyways, your art came out amazing like always! ♥️💕

I can relate I am an 11 year old that always tries to impress others and to stand up to myself at the same time.I started out to be a sweet girl that loved playing along and sharing but after I moved to another state I just couldn’t get used to it,kids liked to take advantage of my kindness and how I behaved.So when I realized that they were taking advantage I stared to stop being the kind girl that anyone could push around and started to push them around if they tried to push me around.And when I started to like art I tried my best to make a perfect masterpiece and become famous,so I always tried to impress others.I always expected so much more of myself and others.later I started to lose friends and became lonely.Now the only friends I have are,the nice girl that always is there to cheer me on and pull me off the cliff of disappointment and my drawings.

I feel like this painting is really artistic and not just an illustration. When I think about how it was made, i just think about myself and i don’t know why. I’ve always been the same as you, uncomfortable with my art or just... start thinking that everything I do is bad. But then the way everything was filmed and well putted together makes me feel relaxed. The fact that, all those beautiful colors mixed together made me think of my own personality or just artists in general. The paint was made with every beautiful colors mixed together and then used to make a one color image. And I feel that it’s a representation or artists, looking gray / weird color but when you look away they are full of different opinions, colors, and ideas.

I love what you did in this video, thank you for sharing with us! You are very talented, and I also really love the way this video was edited it was so artistic and beautiful! I've recently started watching a lot of artists on youtube. I really want to become a better artist but it is hard because its hard to /not/ feel perfect, its hard to love something you made and have someone else be like "eh, could be better". It's just important to remember that someone with the right eye for things can see the beauty in even the weirdest pieces. You don't have to be perfect. Be true to yourself and you and everyone who sees what you work on (who appreciates others) will feel the passion and self-ness that resonates within your art that is a part of you. Thank you for inspiring me

just in the palette, i was like, "ugh!" but then you used it in action (LOVE your illustration style!!), and was very pleasantly surprised! i was pretty sure the 120 colors would make a brown, not a black...but then you threw in the "mystery color" option and i can't resist a good mystery option!! haha

I really love this color actually. It has this warmish-cool shade mixed into it, and I wasnt sure if this could be used in anyway possible but the color has this aesthetically pleasing feel to it. Its a really cool color, tho it looks bland and dull from a single glance, it looks nice when you look more into it. Especially when you do a one color palllette challenge/drawing, its so pleasing. Wow, so many of us were raised in households that required perfection. Yours sounds to me like a legalistic, religious home. Mine was because of a Narcissistic mother. Religious rules were also used to make me feel inadequate. Ironically, it wasn’t until I was in my 40s and surrendered to Jesus that I found real, actual freedom *from* religion. All those years wasted, believing I wasn’t good enough, would never be satisfactory, what a disappointment to my mother...all those years spent in bondage to religion, to that feeling of never, ever being “enough”. Jesus doesn’t do that to people. If you’re reading this, and trying your hardest to please someone and be “perfect”, please know that you can’t. Only one man could, and He loves you more deeply than anyone who is trying to make you feel less-than. Your picture is gorgeous and the filming is superb. It amazes me, an artist “wanna be”, when I see such talent. 💚

hey Lisa, thank you so much! I needed to hear this. This is pretty much what I'm going thru now to a T. I have a family member that is Narcissistic, according to my licensed counselor and was indoctrinated in a legalistic home. It's only recently that I've begun to start breaking free and my hope is to help others who are stuck in whatever situation they are in.
@GodzHarleyGirlStudio

Watercolor Misfit Exactly the same in my life!! I went to a Pastor/Licensed Counselor for 3 years and I made so many great strides! I once mentioned to my mother, "Did you know you raised 5 perfectionistic kids (there are 5 children)??" She said, "Oh, is that bad"? I didn't know what to say because some of the perfectionism is good for things. I was also raised very legalistic in a Christian church and it made me so unwittingly naive that I made MANY huge mistakes in decisions because of not knowing what "love" really was. I wasn't taught finances either. I was left wide open for abuse, and it did happen, many times. I've been made fun of because of my mistakes but they were because of the way I was raised. They always say, "Your parents did the best they could", which I do NOT believe. Everyone else saw the "nice" side, you were taught how to act properly in public, and since I am the youngest, I saw the most of the "not nice" side. Now, if I get a chance to talk with younger people, and my grandkids, I let them know things that I had to learn in my 50's, just recently. I am now, though, in a huge state of depression and not painting not doing anything at all. I have to pray a lot of times for the devil to get out so I don't hear his self-defeating words shout loudly in my head. I've found books by Corrie ten Boom, her most popular was "The Hiding Place", about her family hiding Jews in Holland, going to prison and the concentration camps we heard about. She lost all of her family but then "tramped for the Lord" all over the world teaching people the things she learned. I have around 24 books she wrote and am trying to find the last few BUT I've learned *SO MUCH* from her about love, peace, joy, fear, worry, etc., that I now love myself and am free of a lot of things I was taught. If you get a chance to read her books, DO, because they are so helpful. She shows you a prayer on how to cast out the devil, demons and spirits that keep people inturmoil. Hope this helps. Carrie, I am praying for ya. I'm the one who told you I also have PCOS. Anyway, love y'all and thanks so much for sharing this!!!! Huge hugz, Tree

You have a great voice. You'd be great at doing voice overs. Also impressed by your eye for cinematography. When I grew up with my mother for the short periods of time in my youth and I was not allowed to make mistakes. One of the reasons I struggled in school was because I had asked for homework help and when I wasn't getting things fast enough my mother got frustrated at me and just gave up. Obviously I could not complete my homework without guidance. Ever since then I never asked for help in my studies. My fears of rejection stop me from pursuing many things but I'm getting better at having a more healthy attuide towards it. Anyway, you got yourself a new subscriber.

I completely can relate on that note! Whenever I finish a drawing I really love, I can't do anything afterwards. I stress myself out so much and I end up not drawing again for ages. I get so scared and think things like "it was just a fluke." and if I do draw again and it's not perfect, I believe it more and more. My reason however for this - is because of my OCD + Depression. Super great video, I love you and the art you create - am totally subbing.

This was just beautiful! I was raised differently, but, my mother was raised as you were...to be perfect and she was not even remotely capable of such a thing, yet, her sister was. You can well imagine how that went. ANYWAY, I was always encouraged with my art, thank God. I am so glad I found your channel!

There's no such thing as "being not good enough". As long as you tried your best, be proud of it because you can only do your best. If someone doesnt appreciate that, then you can't do anything anyway. So be proud of your drawings, your life, everything you do. Someday, you will overcome your anxiety problem.

I still have a problem this problem too! I tend to be to critical of myself - only seeing the flaws when I'm done. I'm currently trying to refocus my negative critiques and keep a log of where I could improve for future illustrations. I also try and keep a log of everything that went well in the current one! I guess trying to balance the positive and negative in some way :) It helps me for some reason :)
@surrounding.my.surrounding9452
that is exactly how i feel too!

I'm the same way, I've gotten better at not doing this over the years but it's still a constant struggle. Especially whenever my Dad asks me if I'm going to start selling prints of my art or do commissions for others. I love drawing and doing art for fun, but that's it. I also have a hard time accepting/believing compliments and trusting others, but I know where that comes from. Stay with it and try not to care what others think, especially when it's not done in a constructive way. Criticism is fine, so long as it's constructive and you can then learn and grow from it

So I know this video is a couple of months old but it came down on my recommended videos while I was suffering through a major headache and I have to say, your voice and editing style is so incredibly soothing it's a little unreal. I usually listen to/watch ASMR videos when I'm feeling sick but I've been looking for more art-focused ones that have a narrative to them, like yours does and just through this one video I'm absolutely hooked! This comment is probably rambly and a little odd to read, so in my defense, my head still hurts a little. In summary, thank you for this video because (1) art anxiety is something I suffer from as a writer ALL THE TIME and (2) I feel so much better just from listening to your incredible voice.

I am so sorry to hear of your struggle. And I so recognise it. They indeed mean well. And perhaps are victim from it too. Though that does not help us, specially if it is family related; it does make it easier to accept it. Growingup as adhd person in a home where not even the sugar cup was permitted to stay two mm out of line ( Beware the rath of the microfibre cloth,lol, jeah I can now laugh on it,but as a kid that is a hell: it feels like never being good enough and that kills you even with all my Liberties that I was given. In my case, you could say those were to much liberties on that age) I hope you are at peace in some level, of your upbringing. Being angry at it certainly wont fix it. My parents love me to pieces. I am just different and thats ok.
